Title, Songye Power Figure Nkishi Custom Stand DR Congo African Type of Object, figure. Statue, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, ... moreSongye, Materials, Wood. A Fine Ngaady Amwaash/ Kete. Kuba, Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowrie shells. Hammered coper, beads, ... morefur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Kuba peoples call themselves“children of Woot” in honor of their founder. Kuba art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Ngaady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister-wife. The third mask, the Bwoom. Represents a pygmy and is associated with Woot‘s evil brother. This mask. Ngaady Amwaash portrays Mweel. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents women in general. The mask is striking with its strong pattern of white and black triangles painted on the face, which are said to represent hearthstones and domesticity. Lines painted down the cheeks represent tears and recall the pain of death, for royal masks often appear in funerary contexts. The tears also denote the hardship of a woman's life as a"pawn" of male authority befitting the mask's name(Ngaady aMwaash) which means"pawn woman of Mwaash, her husband/brother king. The Ngaady Amwaash and Moshambwooy masks dance together on ceremonial occasions with great dignity and pride“ University of Virginia. African Masks Signs of use. H: 48 cm(19 inch) Provenance: L. 29 x 13 x 15 inches This stunning wooden trunk is from the Kuba area of the Congo. Africa. It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. RARE. ANTIQUE, AND VERY UNIQUE KUBA HAND CARVED WOOD"LUKATA" CONTAINER, USED TO STORE RED"TUKULA" BODY POWDER FROM THE AFRICAN REGION ... moreOF THE CONGO FROM THE LATE 19TH TO EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY Very unique and odd piece of World-Wide ethnic folk art and culture. This piece comes to you from a recent auction purchase of a man who owned many pieces of hand-made African regional art. These Lukata style containers were highly prized in the Kuba people culture of the Congo in Africa and were used to store the red Tukula body powder that was applied to the body prior to significant ceremonies such as funerals. Many of these boxes/containers are normally very small in size and have been made without covers or they have been lost over time. Many with covers were"more expensive" to create in their culture. So this example must have come from a more wealthy person or family. Many of the hand carved art and designs had important meaning to the Kuba people, but this has been since lost over time. This beautiful example is in wonderful. As found condition. It does have cracks here and there over this container, but this is due to the type of wood used at the time of creation, plus it being over 100+ years old. It retains the original reddish brown patina on the exterior which has many spots of original red Tukula powder residue, along with residue on the inside of the container, as seen in the photos. It stands 11" high with the cover attached and is about 4" wide at it's widest points. DON'T MISS OUT! This would make for a wonderful displayed piece of art work in your home or place of business. Especially if you have an interest in African art! A true one of a kind. Hand made piece of art! You will receive the exact pictured items being offered here in AS-IS condition. Size:37x22 mm. Additional:++What really is Kuman Thong?++ Kuman Thong( syn. Kuman Thong. Lit.Golden Child) is a kid's angel that've been bounded to some kind of magickal statue by monk or shaman(s) The angel will be raised somewhat like a kid and continue his/her growth and learning on another plane of existence. But, by the way, the ghost will, by the dark art's power, grow a lot faster than a living-kid. ++Where did the angel came from?++ The ghost that will be bounded have to be a soul that've been commited to at least one time of aborticide in his/her past-live. Thai people generally admitted about the reincarnation concept ... morethat the deeds we've done.Good or bad, shall be finally get back to us. So do the golden childs and their karma. This shamantic rite is considered not an imprisonment because the ghost him/herself has to be willing to be bounded to serve their karma. Thus the raising of Kuman Thong is not to hurt a ghost. Moreover. The Kuman's'masters' was often founded to have some kind of former karmic relationship with their ghost. The Kuman can become good or evil depends on the way they're raised. and when Kumars help people(i.e. their master) The good karma will reward them and even make them finally become a little angel. Kuman thong is an artifact that can bring about either good or bad things depends on how their master raise them. How their creator create them, and also the character of the host soul itself. ++Shipping Information++ Winning bidders within 48 contiguous states pay S/H fees: $7 for UPS Standard Shipping. default shipping method) $15 for UPS 3 Days Select. $25 for UPS 2nd Day Air. $39 for UPS Next Day Air. Kuba Royal Textile Bark Cloth and Raffia Overskirt Ntshakishyeen African
Title, Kuba Royal Textile Bark Cloth and Raffia Overskirt Ntshakishyeen African, Type of Object, Royal overskirt, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba, Materials, Bark cloth. Raffia palm fibers, dyes, Approximate Age, Early to mid 20th century, Dimensions, 56 x 26.5 inches, Overall Condition, Poor. Damage/Repair, Bad damage: tears. Seams, and holes; cloth has some loose threads and fraying. Several bark cloth triangles have disintegrated. Some seams are coming out. Dyes are fading. We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and ... morefabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: The following are excerpts from Kuba Textiles and Design. By Elizabeth S. Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! Patchwork skirts made of beaten bark and raffia are among the most prestigious of the Kuba skirts and overskirts. The way these media are combined depends on the taste of the weaver. In some cases. The borders are made of ra
AFRICAN KUBA TEXTILE CLOTH RAFFIA from the Congo 144"x 22"
AFRICAN KUBA CLOTH RAFFIA from the Congo Size: 144 INCHES X 22 INCHES The Kuba cloth is made using the leaf of the raffia tree. The Kuba people of the Congo first hand cut, and then weave the strips of leaf to make pieces of fabric, often called raffia cloth. There are several different sub groups of the Kuba people. Each group has different and unique ways to make the fabric. Some make it thicker, longer, shorter, or with different patches. Each patch is symbolic and many times a piece has many different meanings. When Kuba cloth originated there were probably no patches used, but as the cloth is brittle it is quite likely that the patches were used to repair the frequent tears. Later each patch developed a meaning, many patterns are uniquely arranged to tell a story. 36

Most famous for their monumental helmet masks, royal figures, and exquisite and stunning fabrics, the Kuba are also famous for their smaller, carved prestige objects where their true genius can be best appreciated. The palm wine cups and the lidded boxes, with their proud, strong faces and remarkable and mythological significant geometric designs, are of a great beauty. The boxes, with their many shapes and designs, are justifiably famous. They are also one of the few remaining links to the ancient Kuba. Cylindrical box like this owe their shape to basketry containers. Such boxes are known as Lukata and were used to store red"tukula" powder( twool) that was ritually essential and thus highly-prized. This red powder was applied to the body prior to important ceremonies like funerals. And also mixed with other pigments to dye raffia cloth, an

Large Mwaash aMbooy mask (helmet) from the Kuba tribe of Zaire/Congo/Africa
Up for auction is a large intricately decorated Mwaash aMbooy mask(helmet mask) from the Kuba tribe of southeastern Congo(formerly Zaire) Below is an except from the Brooklyn Museum about Mwaash aMbooy: Among the Kuba. Masks are thought to be reflections of nature-spirits( mingesh) that act as intermediaries between the Supreme Being(Nyeem) and the world of mortals. There are more than twenty different types of masks that function within the men's initiation society. Moshambwooy is one of the three most important and represents Woot. The founding hero from whom the Kuba believe themselves to be descended. Moshambwooy masks are worn by the nyimi. Or king, of the Kuba or by chiefs in villages. The nyimi's mask is usually made of leopard skin. While those of chiefs are made of antelope skin. The face of this mask is probably antelope ... moreskin painted with a design to look like leopard's fur. The nose and ears are carved of wood, and the white beard of fur from the chest of a sheep represents the beard of an old man. The mask is in extremely good condition given its age(probably from the 70s) with only two small areas of beadwork missing(please see photos) on the back(which one cannot really see because of the fiber cuff around the mask) The mask measures 22.5in tall. 16in wide, and 15in deep. It comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home. US bidders preferred. International bidders must message me first as I do not ship to all countries and will have to get you a quote for shipping(the above estimate is for domestic shipping) Please wait for invoice before paying because the above shipping is an estimate. I only charge you exact shipping costs which will be included in your invoice. So. Again please wait for the invoice. Payment must be received within 5 days of when invoice is sent. Thanks!

Kuba Ngeende Mask Smiling Congo African SALE Was $450
Title, Kuba Mask. Smiling, Feathers, UNUSUAL Isheen Maal African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Ngeende, Materials, Wood. Feathers, raffia, Approximate Age, Mid to second half  20th Century, Dimensions, 16 inches High x 12 inches Wide. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, Minor crack in base rim and mouth. Large crack on top of head.Large chip to bottom. Additional Information: This is an interesting mask for it shows unusual features I have ever found on Kuba masks. The hairstyle. And lthe large smiling mouth as well as the general structure of the mask(facial mask with headress) are atypical of the Kuba style. The only elements that related this mask to the Kuba are the goggle eyes with holes around as seen on Isheen Maal masks. This is an innovative product from dating probably from ... morethe second half of the 20th century. Traditional Kuba masks belong to the royal art. And most masks are somehow related to the three main characters of Kuba mythology: 1) Woot(the"first ancestor, akin to Adam) 2) Woot's brother, and rival for the love of 3) Woot's sister-who ended up with Woot. This one was probably made by the Ngeende. The Ngeende group claims to be descended from Ishweemy. One of the nine sons of Woot, the primordial founder of the Kuba Kingdom. Accordingly, the Ngeende are of special importance to the Kuba Kingdom and designated as the holders of the Kuba official charms, Muyum. They share not only a common history but also the same culture and traditions as the Kuba. Even today, they still send representatives to the Kuba-Bushoong court. The Ngeende live in small villages led by chiefs who rule with the council of elders. Understandably, their art has many congruities with the art of the Kuba-Bushoong, the Ngoongo, the Kete, and all of them produce masks. The Ngeende masks tell the story of Woot and other important characters in the foundation of Kuba kingdom. These include Bongo(Mbwoom) Mukenge which is a variant of Moshambooy, Shala-Mushampoji
