A Fine Ngaady Amwaash/ Kete. Kuba, Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowrie shells. Hammered coper, beads, ... morefur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Kuba peoples call themselves“children of Woot” in honor of their founder. Kuba art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Ngaady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister-wife. The third mask, the Bwoom. Represents a pygmy and is associated with Woot‘s evil brother. This mask. Ngaady Amwaash portrays Mweel. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents women in general. The mask is striking with its strong pattern of white and black triangles painted on the face, which are said to represent hearthstones and domesticity. Lines painted down the cheeks represent tears and recall the pain of death, for royal masks often appear in funerary contexts. The tears also denote the hardship of a woman's life as a"pawn" of male authority befitting the mask's name(Ngaady aMwaash) which means"pawn woman of Mwaash, her husband/brother king. The Ngaady Amwaash and Moshambwooy masks dance together on ceremonial occasions with great dignity and pride“ University of Virginia. African Masks Signs of use. H: 48 cm(19 inch) Provenance: L. Mooney. Director Catholic Aid Agencies Zaire c.1950-1960's- Ken Adelman. Former director USAID Zaire, c.1975 and former assistant US Ambassador to the UN- David Gelbard Collection. New York. Formerly in a Portuguese ancient& tribal art gallery. Purchased at important tribal art sale. Please see Press Release. Authenticated by the renowned expert Scott Rodolitz( former World Wide Director of African and Oceanic Art at Bonham´s New York)

RARE. ANTIQUE, AND VERY UNIQUE KUBA HAND CARVED WOOD"LUKATA" CONTAINER, USED TO STORE RED"TUKULA" BODY POWDER FROM THE AFRICAN REGION ... moreOF THE CONGO FROM THE LATE 19TH TO EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY Very unique and odd piece of World-Wide ethnic folk art and culture. This piece comes to you from a recent auction purchase of a man who owned many pieces of hand-made African regional art. These Lukata style containers were highly prized in the Kuba people culture of the Congo in Africa and were used to store the red Tukula body powder that was applied to the body prior to significant ceremonies such as funerals. Many of these boxes/containers are normally very small in size and have been made without covers or they have been lost over time. Many with covers were"more expensive" to create in their culture. So this example must have come from a more wealthy person or family. Many of the hand carved art and designs had important meaning to the Kuba people, but this has been since lost over time. This beautiful example is in wonderful. As found condition. It does have cracks here and there over this container, but this is due to the type of wood used at the time of creation, plus it being over 100+ years old. It retains the original reddish brown patina on the exterior which has many spots of original red Tukula powder residue, along with residue on the inside of the container, as seen in the photos. It stands 11" high with the cover attached and is about 4" wide at it's widest points. DON'T MISS OUT! This would make for a wonderful displayed piece of art work in your home or place of business. Especially if you have an interest in African art! A true one of a kind. Hand made piece of art! You will receive the exact pictured items being offered here in AS-IS condition. African Kuba cloth skirt bakuba raffia Africa s135
SquareTrade © AP6.0 New Handmade Authentic African Kuba Cloth Skirt approximately 29 x 185 inches Kuba cloth is an amazing creation of the Kuba or Bakuba peoples of Africa. It is one of the very few fabrics which is still completely made by hand and of natural materials! The Kuba people love design and ornamentation. And decorate even everyday objects with fantastic patterns. Their cloth is perhaps their crowning achievement. Kuba cloth is a true labor of love. It is woven from raffia strands which are collected and prepared usually by men or boys. It is also the males who weave the fibers into a basic fabric called"mbal. Since the raffia fibers are not connected to lengthen them. The base cloth is never very large or long, though individual pieces, once woven, may be connected. Before the decorating, women dampen and beat the cloth ... morerepeatedly until it reaches the correct firmness or softness. If the mbal needs to be dyed. It is. Dyes come from Tukula wood, clay, iron dross, indigo, and other plants. Then women begin the patterns. They may applique shapes cut from other cloths to form larger patterns. They may be embroidered with dyed raffia threads. Sections may be combined to form a patchwork look. Or any of these methods may be combined with the others. These are all usually found on the longer pieces termed skirts. The smaller pieces termed velvets are created by a combination of embroidery and a cut pile technique. Some designs are stitched onto the cloth. But for fill. An artist will pull several strands through the base cloth with a needle, then cut them, creating a natural pile with a knife. The fibers are not tied, but simply held in place by the tightness of the weave of the base cloth. The back of the piece usually bears no signs of the embroidery. What may be the most amazing fact of all. Is that the artist never sketches her designs ahead of time! She works from images in her mind, many times patterns that have been passed down for generations. They also usually have names or meanings, hono

19TH CENTURY SUPERLATIVE ANATOLIAN?, CAUCASIAN, TRIBAL KUBA? ORIENTAL RUG KAZAK?
This is really a wonderful rug. Circa 1880-1900. I am guessing Anatolian but it could be a kurd piece or a caucasian. Certainly it is of turkic influence. the wool is luxurious and the handle quite sublime. The magenta is just spectacular. The photos do not do the rug justice. Wool warp and weft. The weft is blue and natural in color. The weaver appears to have used what was available. She also made a wonderful change in the bottom fifth of the rug in the first medallion as it looks like she changed her mind about the medallion size. All of the colors are vegetal and the wool is super soft. There are no odors or rot. There is some slight mothing and the central area of the rug is at the knots. There are a few pea sized breaks in the warp. To me this has the color scheme of a turkoman rug with the magenta and madder red but the end finishes ... moreand the design look more like Bergama. Kurd or Kuba. You can clearly see that this is a tribal rug and as such the dimensions are not perfectly rectangular. The length is between 74 and 76 inches and the width varies between 44.5 to 49 inches. This would make a superb addition to a good collection. I am starting it at $400 with no reserve.

EARLY CAUCASIAN RUG FRAGMENT--EASTERN CAUCASUS--KUBA/SEICHOR
Here’s a fragment of an interesting old Eastern Caucasian rug that I believe is quite old—possibly mid 19th century or earlier. The single. Rather narrow border suggests an early rug. The size as presently constituted is 26” x 40” 66cm x 102cm) It consists of approximately the lower third of a rug, with the top border apparently re-formed from sections of the side border from parts of the rug that were discarded. The original width of the rug was 40 inches-the selvages are present. The lower end still retains some of the macramé-knotted warps. The colors are characteristic of a group of rugs from the eastern Caucasus. Including many rugs called“Seychor” or“Zeichur” which have a similar light red(pink) in combination with a coral or apricot shade(all good, vegetal colors) It also has the very corrosive black that characterizes many old ... morerugs of this genre. In this fragment, someone has“inked” some of the foundation in areas where the black pile had disappeared. If you have questions. Please email and I will happily reply. The following two pictures are of the back.

BACKGROUND The Kuba live in the area of central DRC bordered by the Sankuru. Kasai, and Lulua rivers. This is a region of valleys where numerous rivers flow south to north; the hills are covered with brush and the rivers are bordered by forests. Farming, aside from clearing the fields, was women’s work; they cultivate manioc, corn, gourds, bananas, pineapples, and palms. Tobacco was grown by the men. The hunt, a collective enterprise using nets, brought prestige and reinforced the social cohesion between the villagers. To fish the rivers required the participation of the entire village in order to build canoes. Although today most Kuba ethnic groups are organized into independent chiefdoms, they still recognize the authority of the Bushong king. The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions, and significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop, idealized representations. An ndop may have played a role in the installation of the king, and during his life it is said to have been not only a portrait but also t

Antique African Tribal Skirt - Kuba Cloth OverSkirt – Hand Woven – Zaire
The Kuba people of Zaire weave a wide variety of cloth made from rafia. A natural fiber from palm leaves. The material is stripped into very fine threads, soaked and pounded to make them flexible, and dyed in vegetal or mineral pigments to create a variety of colors. The Kuba employ a variety of weaving and decoration techniques. This overskirt uses both cut pile and false embroidery to achieve the desired geometric designs, This garment is called an overskirt. It is woven of natural rafia fiber. And is believed to date from before 1960. I bought it from a large collection of garments collected by a woman who lived and traveled through Africa 30 to 50 years ago. Dimensions are about 13 inches wide and 36 inches long. The designs in this center panel are cut pile accented with false embroidery. The border pieces. Which utilize only false embroidery ... morein different colors to create the design, were made from separate pieces. These were then attached by hand using rafia thread. Overall condition is Very Good. With a few loose seams as can be seen in the photos, as well as some light soil and staining from natural dyes. All of the outermost rafia cord is present and attached. There are no noticeable holes. This would make a fantastic display piece for the serious African Artifact Collector. A Bwoon Helmet-Mask/ Bushoong. Kuba Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowries shells, cloth, powerfully carved with large bulbous forehead. The Kuba kingdom was founded in the 16th century by the Bushoong people. Bushoong art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of royal mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Nady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister and represents women in general. The third mask, the Bwoon. Is associated with Woot‘s“evil brother” Bwoon personifies a commoner. A pygmy, or one who opposes the king's authority. Bwoom appears on the nkan"initiation fence" of the Bushong(Vansina ... more1955:150-151) and in other initiation contexts. A royal mask. Bwoom is sometimes worn by the king. Yet unlike Mwaashamboy. ANTIQUE ! WORN! LARGE ROYAL KUBA TLACA CLOTH 26: X 160 - TUFTED - FROG PATTERN
KUBA ROYAL GRASS SKIRT 26" x 160" FROG PATTERN"In the past. Kuba cloths of cut pile were prestige items, rarely worn but used as signs of wealth during life and at death. To make one could take up to a year. The base fabric was woven by men from softened raffia(palm leaf fibers) and usually left its light tan color. Women then applied two decorative techniques, embroidery- that is further stitching onto the base material- and plush or cut pile. Marc Ginzberg African Forms. Kuba skirts. Tcaka. Long are cloths made from raffia, from 8- 25 feet long, from the Ngeende. Bushoong and Ngongo peoples. They incorporate appliqued"patches" embroidered shapes and patterns, openwork, tie-dye, cowrie shells, barkcloth and border elements. The appliqued"patches" originally repaired holes, then developed into traditional ... moredesign motifs. Most are covered with geometric symbols; many are restrained, subtle and rhythmic designs using one technique; others create amazing quilt-like assemblages of old pieces of many forms. The full skirts, worn by men and women, are bunched up and wrapped around many times. A NOTE ABOUT THESE PHOTOGRAPHS: Being as long as they are. These skirts are extremely difficult to photograph. Although the color tends to be fairly uniform, they do appear lighter at the top than the bottom due to the location of the light source. What you see here are sections up to eight feet long taken from both ends. Any serious stains, holes or discolorations will be shown in the detail. These photographs were taken with the cloth lying loosely. It can be pinned flat for display. CARE: The cloth is not fragile and can be pinned onto a wall or panel for display. This auction features a one of a kind Kuba raffia textile; we have seen many on ebay but not one quite like this one; every Kuba raffia cloth is unique. This"appliquee" Kuba raffia cloth has a complex embroidered geometric design with great earthtone appeal. Its different black patterns contrast well with the beige background

Tessuto etnia Kuba Cm. 52 x 49(Rep. Dem. del Congo centro-meridionale)
DIMENSIONI: Cm. 52 x 49 MATERIALE: Rafia CARATTERISTICHE: Recente lavorazione DESCRIZIONE: Tessuto etnia Kuba(Rep.

Title, Kuba Square Kasai Velvet Boutallah Raffia Textile African, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba, Materials, Raffia palm fibers. Dyes, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 19.75 inches x 21 inches, Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, none, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional information: The following are excerpts from Kuba Textiles and Design. By Elizabeth S. Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Where representative ... moreart has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river along which the BaKuba live. Improvisation and irregularity characterize the Kasai Velvets. This is because the weaver works without a plan or preliminary sketching, though the model can occasionally be displayed on the cloth in advance using black thread. Often the design is built up from memory, repeating the most common d

For sale is a Mid-Century Af rican Kuba Kasai Velvet Raffia Tapestry Retangular Table Runne r T his p iece was purchased at an estate sale and was i dentified as Mid- Century. It is very dramatic and meant for display. It is a bi t fragile and not for actual table use. The information I found on the web for this type of weaving is: Kasai velvets are small. Generally square, pile tapestries with geometric designs woven in raised relief and employing a subtle earth tone colour palette including black, brown, beige and ivory. The materials used in their creation are palm leaf fibers or raffia that was cultivated, harvested and processed by the men of the villages; the fibers are then woven by the men on vertical looms after which, to soften them, they were soaked in water and beaten. The women embroider the patterns with needle and raffia thread ... moreusing complex techniques. Great skill and effort. The complete weaving was then shorn in a similar technique to carpet weaving. T here is staining on the front- please se e pic t ure s. This is a hand woven piece and sho ws normal signs of age and rustic hand craft. 9.99 GRASS SHOOWAH VELVET KUBA PRESTIGE CLOTH -21" x 22" SOFT used OLDER
KUBA ZAIRE PRESTIGE CLOTH"In the past. The Boutalla are the more plush of the Kuba"square" textiles. And the designs are elaborate and exceptional. These textiles were used as currency, and as ceremonial offerings, in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was formerly Zaire. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm ... moretree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. The true jewels of textile art are the small Shoowa cut-pile cloths. Their compex interplay of geometric symbols. Inventive rhythm and balance, uniquely individual designs and tight"velvet"surfaces created objects so mysteriously alluring the Kuba people traded them as currency and were the standard by which a family's wealth and status were judged. These raffia cut-pile cloths, woven by men, were embroidered by women with no stitching visible on the back. Highly prized for their inventive patterns, they are further embellished with tight tufting, leading to the nickname"Kasai velvet" They were sewn together for ceremonial dress and covered royal stools. As a sign of status and to provide for the afterlife they were buried with kings or those fortunate enough to own many. 21" x 23" MEDIUM WEIGHT. HIGH/LOW PLUSH& STITCHING. CONDITION IS EXCELLENT FOR AGE A LITTLE WEAR( IN PHOTOS) ON 1 EDGE BLACKS, TANS, BROWNS. NO TEARS. NO HOLES, NO WEAR, 4 BOUND EDGES) THIS IS A 10+YEAR. CLOTH AN EXCELLENT PATTERN SOME PEO
