Whispering Pines, NC. Field collected in Zaire, early 20th cenury. Dr. Carlton W. Helen Moore Collection. Waldorf, MD. Fayetteville Museum of Art. Fayetteville, NC, 2001. Deaccessioned and sold to fund construction of the new museum in Festival Park. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their Kuba neighbors to the north. Describing an near identical mask form. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient tribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Dr. Carlton and Helen Moore Collection. The Pate& Moore Collection was generously donated to Fayetteville Museum of Art in 2001. Founded in 1972, the Fayetteville Museum of Art move

Title, Kuba Royal Helmet Mask M'Boom DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, ... morecooper alloy, beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13 inches. Wide is 8 inches. Depth is 13 inches. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, wear. Chips in places, rusting metal, dents, Additional Information: A superb example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. The offered mask is a beautiful example with elaborate beadwork. This is a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. The Kuba are some of the most proficient artists and craftspeople in Africa. This is just another example of their artistic merit reflected in one of many hand crafted utilitarian objects. Beautifully carved handle and horse hair whisk. A fine piece! It measures 17" in overall length.

The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions, and significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Kuba artists use a stencil to cut decorative designs out of a brightly colored cloth, and then sew or apply the designs onto a cloth of a different color. Antique and Fine Kuba Ndop Chief Figure, Democratic Republic of Congo
The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions. And significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop. Idealized representations. An ndop may have played a role in the installation of the king. And during his life it is said to have been not only a portrait but also the soul double of the king. Whatever happened to him was believed to happen to it as well. Closely associated with the king’s fertility, the ndop was kept in the woman’s quarters. And was placed next to his wives during childbirth to ensure safe delivery. The kings typically sit facing forward with legs crossed, the left in front of the right; the right hand, with fingers extended, rests on the right knee, and the left hand holds the royal dagger. Geometric ... morepatterns cover the stomach and are continued on the back of the figure. The royal statues show the king wearing a rectangular shody hat. They are mounted on quadrangular pedestals. The sculptures include objects significant to each particular king, identifying his own personal accomplishments. Developing from the court style was a popular style, which utilized geometric forms instead of the well-modeled, full-volume forms of the court figures. Kuba fetishes, emphasizing only essential organs, are highly schematic. The popular style can also be found in the utensils and textiles produced by the Kuba. This figure with its delicate and intricate designs was carved around late 1970's, early 1980's, secured on a beautifully carved wood base. Kuba Bwoom African Tribal Ritual Mask, Democratic Republic of Congo
Here is an original Kuba tribal mask that was handcrafted in the Lulua Province. Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is made of wood, cowrie shells, beads, fur, leather, and cloth. It measures 12" high, 8" across,10" deep, and spans 18" from the bottom of the beard to the top of the forehead. The mask was made for performances of a ritual masquerade. From information available online from the Brooklyn Museum, I learned that Kuba mythology revolves around three figures, each represented by a masquerade character: Woot, the creator and founder of the ruling dynasty; Woot’s spouse; and Bwoom. Bwoom’s specific identity varies according to different versions of the myth. He may represent the king’s younger brother, a person of Twa descent, or a commoner. Embodying a subversive force within the royal court, the Bwoom masquerade ... moreis often performed in conflict with the masked figure representing Woot. The mask is in fine condition. There is wear to the dark finish, particularly on the ear to the viewer's left. There are a few small chips. The section of cloth beard in the proximate position of the right molars is loose- a few dabs of white glue would fix this. The mask's net weight is 3-1/2 pounds and packaged weight will be 6 pounds. Shipping via USPS Standard Post will be $14.00. Any questions, just ask. Thanks! ShipSaver.

Additional Information: Thick pile embroidery with a texture and beauty that you can feel with you hands! Kuba cloth is the embroidered and appliquéd fabric of the Kuba people from DR of Congo and is amongst the best-known textile of the ancient African tradition of raffia cloth weaving. Its geometric art forms have been the source of inspiration for artists such as Picasso. Klee and Matisse who respectively owned extensive collections. Kuba textile art is created from single panels of cloth ... moreembroidered with dyed raffia thread and is cut to create a plush pile cloth. These panels are not worn but displayed, and serve as currency and markers of prestige. This is one such prestige panel. Like almost all so-called Kasai"velvets" the overall composition is asymmetrical and irregular and no two panels are identical. We grade the panels in two qualitative categories: 1) A looser. Flatter“Chacho” Raffia cloth(panel flat-weave and cut-pile embroidery, natural dyes) and 2) the“Butala” Premium Quality Raffia cloth which is thicker and more plush(panel flat-weave and cut-pile embroidery, natural dyes) Composed of a series of interlocking knotted designs in tan and black. The visual complexity and geometrical structure make these fabrics a favorite. The variation of compositions are staggering! In Kuba culture, the cloth also forms an important part of funeral rites. High quality, specific patterned raffia dress is key to being recognized by clan ancestors. These designs are handed down from generation to generation and it is the strength of this tradition that has kept the skills of making Kuba cloth alive. Kuba cloth at times also play a role in wedding ceremonie

Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi. Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! Appliqué is the most popular weaving technique among the Kuba. To create an appliqué. Kuba artists use a stencil to cut decorative designs out of a brightly colored cloth, and then sew or apply the designs onto a cloth of a different color. The designs are then placed on top of ye

BEAUTIFUL OLD KUBA PEOPLE CARVED WOOD BOX WITH CARVED FACE ON LID - FROM CONGO
You are bidding on a Beautiful and OLD KUBA PEOPLE Wood Box with Face Carved on Lid. From Congo. Aside from the beautiful cloth mentioned above. The Kuba also produce carved wooden masks and figures. They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. At one time the Kuba had a religion based on ancestor worship, but this seems to have died out, although divination is still practiced in order to discover causes of evil. Success during hunting is recognized as a gift from the gods. It is not incidental that diviners often employ carved wooden hunting dogs as rubbing oracles in order to arrive at their knowledge. Dogs are seen throughout the region ... moreas responsible for delivering the will of the god, whether it be through hunting or through the diviner. CHECKER BOARD PLUSH KUBA PRESTIGE CLOTH 20" X 22 " SALE PRICED
KUBA ZAIRE PRESTIGE CLOTH"In the past. Kuba cloths of cut pile were prestige items, rarely worn but used as signs of wealth during life and at death. To make one could take up to a year. The base fabric was woven by men from softened raffia(palm leaf fibers) and usually left its light tan color. Women then applied two decorative techniques, embroidery- that is further stitching onto the base material- and plush or cut pile. Marc Ginzberg African Forms. The Boutalla are the more plush of the Kuba"square" textiles. And the designs are elaborate and exceptional. These textiles were used as currency, and as ceremonial offerings, in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was formerly Zaire. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm ... moretree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. The true jewels of textile art are the small Shoowa cut-pile cloths. Their compex interplay of geometric symbols. Inventive rhythm and balance, uniquely individual designs and tight"velvet"surfaces created objects so mysteriously alluring the Kuba people traded them as currency and were the standard by which a family's wealth and status were judged. These raffia cut-pile cloths, woven by men, were embroidered by women with no stitching visible on the back. Highly prized for their inventive patterns, they are further embellished with tight tufting, leading to the nickname"Kasai velvet" They were sewn together for ceremonial dress and covered royal stools. As a sign of status and to provide for the afterlife they were buried with kings or those fortunate enough to own many. 20" x 22" HEAVY WEIGHT. THICK PLUSH STITCHING. DYES. African Tribal Mask-Kuba Tribe-Belgian Congo-Zaire-Toothy & Scary Looking
This hand carved mask came from Zaire. Or as it was known at the time, the Belgian Congo. It was inherited from our father who was a pilot for a major oil company. At one time he was working in Africa in the 1950’s and early‘60’s, among other parts of the world. The mask may represent some of the agonies that unfortunate country has suffered. The mask is hand carved from hardwood. It has carved and then painted teeth, scarification on the nose and ears, and possibly a head dress of some kind. The eyes are outlined in white, the left eye showing some small dots in the corner possibly signifying tears. The mask is 14” tall. And about 7 3/4” at the widest. Shipping is $12.50 anywhere in the U.S. International eBayers please contact us for rates to your country. As with all of our items. Expedited shipping is available, quote on request. We are ... morepleased to combine shipping where practical. We will be more than happy to mail you more photographs or information. If you have any questions at all. Please inquire. Questions are always welcome! Thanks.

Antique Small Shirvan Kasak Caucasian Silk Oriental Geometric Kuba Rug
Up for auction is a true beauty. I am by no means a rug expert so feel free to let me know what I do not! This rug does show some wear but is repairable. It measures 32 inches wide x 55 inches long and is similar to a lot of the patters that I have seen. But this one is incredible! The pictures do absolutely no justice. Again. Feel free to share any info you have! As a novice, I am not going to assume anything and you will be the judge. If you have any questions please be specific. And if you feel the need to shoot an offer. Let me know before a bid is made. Once there is a bid, I will not end the auction early. Thanks for looking and good luck! Posted with
