Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. The offered mask is a beautiful example with elaborate beadwork. This is a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. Arm bracelets, typical Kuba ornaments ... moreon belly and headdress, and full bellied physique- a carved knife in the figure's left hand(right in the picture) all essential elements on an ndop Shady hairstyle, necklace, belt(mwaandaan) bracelets, scepter, and the ibol, a symbol particular to the king represented. On this figure, the anvil is the main ibol. This is a recent copy of a Kuba Ndop very reduced in size. Kuba ndop figures show the king. Usually seated cross legged, and the scepter in his hand, the ibol that can identify which king is represented.On this figure it is unclear to which king the Ibol carved here is related to. It could be a replica of the effigy of King Mbopelyeeng a-Ntshey(C. 1760-1780) see originals of Kuba royal effigies in Cornet Joseph, Art Royal Kuba. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: This is a skirt. Worn wrapped multiple times, in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. The hunt, a collective enterprise using nets, brought prestige and reinforced the social cohesion between the villagers. To fish the rivers required the participation of the entire village in order to build canoes. Although today most Kuba ethnic groups are organized into independent chiefdoms, they still recognize the authority of the Bushong king. The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions, and significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions. And significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop. Idealized representations. An ndop may have played a role in the installation of the king. And during his life it is said to have been not only a portrait but also the soul double of the king. Whatever happened to him was believed to happen to it as well. Closely associated with the king’s fertility, the ndop was kept in the woman’s quarters. And was placed next to his wives during childbirth to ensure safe delivery. The kings typically sit facing forward with legs crossed, the left in front of the right; the right hand, with fingers extended, rests on the right knee, and the left hand holds the royal dagger. Geometric ... morepatterns cover the stomach and are continued on the back of the figure. The royal statues show the king wearing a rectangular shody hat. They are mounted on quadrangular pedestals. The sculptures include objects significant to each particular king, identifying his own personal accomplishments. Developing from the court style was a popular style, which utilized geometric forms instead of the well-modeled, full-volume forms of the court figures. Here is an original Kuba tribal mask that was handcrafted in the Lulua Province. Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is made of wood, cowrie shells, beads, fur, leather, and cloth. It measures 12" high, 8" across,10" deep, and spans 18" from the bottom of the beard to the top of the forehead. The mask was made for performances of a ritual masquerade. From information available online from the Brooklyn Museum, I learned that Kuba mythology revolves around three figures, each represented by a masquerade character: Woot, the creator and founder of the ruling dynasty; Woot’s spouse; and Bwoom. Bwoom’s specific identity varies according to different versions of the myth. He may represent the king’s younger brother, a person of Twa descent, or a commoner. Embodying a subversive force within the royal court, the Bwoom masquerade ... moreis often performed in conflict with the masked figure representing Woot. The mask is in fine condition. This red appliqued textile is is a multi-panel skirt(Ntshak) worn wrapped multiple times around the waist. On this textile the strips are sewn on using a machine. In addtion, this offered textile is signed! This textile is made by both men and women. Men did the weaving. Women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. The face has human features including the eyes in coffee bean shape and a large nose. As well as a circular mouth and small C-shaped ears. The head is decorated with a beaded cap as those worn by the King and his dignitaries. This hat is adorned with beads, cowrie shells arranged with typical Kuba designs and symbols. The hat is also decorated with feathers. The painted lines on the face are worn off. The base is surrounded by raffia fibers and embellished with glass beads and cowrie shells. There is a seated figure carved in relief in the back of the head. African Tribal Mask-Kuba Tribe-Belgian Congo-Zaire-Toothy & Scary Looking
This hand carved mask came from Zaire. Or as it was known at the time, the Belgian Congo. It was inherited from our father who was a pilot for a major oil company. At one time he was working in Africa in the 1950’s and early‘60’s, among other parts of the world. The mask may represent some of the agonies that unfortunate country has suffered. The mask is hand carved from hardwood. It has carved and then painted teeth, scarification on the nose and ears, and possibly a head dress of some kind. The eyes are outlined in white, the left eye showing some small dots in the corner possibly signifying tears. The mask is 14” tall. And about 7 3/4” at the widest. Kuba cups and boxes, sculpture and masks. The handle is formed by a face and hand on one side, which are typical of the Kuba sculpture. The base is slightly cone-shaped The animal skin is held on with wooden pegs. The surface show traces of long use. Drum is in superb shape and sounds wonderful. According to a Belgian scholar. Joseph Maes, cited in many books, the motif of the hand is the warrior's emblem(Yolo) It recalls his investiture, at which he is sad to bring his enemy's hand. see similar example in Marie-Therese Brincard, SOUNDING FORMS. Using ivory or wooden ponders one or more men beat the bark against a smooth horizontal tree trunk to expand it and make it softer.
