I have collected a lot of treasures through my travels over the years and have recently downsized my home and need to thin out the treasures. I lived in Africa(Zaire. I currently live in the southwest USA and have collected a number of things from this area. If you don’t see what you are looking for drop me line, I might have it. I have bought a lot of things on Ebay and know what I like in a vendor and what I appreciate as someone buying on Ebay. This beautiful rug has been restored with dyes and in 3 places with flat stiching(white) The extent of wear in the rug before restoration is shown in picture#3 where one can see that the brown wool was considerably corroded away(as well in more limited cases of the other colors) Pile in the borders is very good- the central area less so, low pile mainly, but no holes.Picture#10 is of the back. Rug is narrower at top than bottom: exact dimension at top is 39 and half inches, at bottom: 43 inches, length is 74 inches The cost of restoring the rug was considerable, but given it`s rarity and beauty and the pleasing result, it was justified, I think. Rug weighs 3 kg. Returns accepted within 7 days- buyer pays return.
African Kuba cloth velvet bakuba raffia Africa v405
SquareTrade © AP6.0 New Handmade Authentic African Kuba Cloth Velvet or Embroidery approximate average 20 x 24 inches Kuba cloth is an amazing creation of the Kuba or Bakuba peoples of Africa. It is one of the very few fabrics which is still completely made by hand and of natural materials! The Kuba people love design and ornamentation. And decorate even everyday objects with fantastic patterns. Their cloth is perhaps their crowning achievement. Kuba cloth is a true labor of love. It is woven from raffia strands which are collected and prepared usually by men or boys. It is also the males who weave the fibers into a basic fabric called"mbal. Since the raffia fibers are not connected to lengthen them. The base cloth is never very large or long, though individual pieces, once woven, may be connected. Before the decorating, women dampen ... moreand beat the cloth repeatedly until it reaches the correct firmness or softness. If the mbal needs to be dyed. It is. Dyes come from Tukula wood, clay, iron dross, indigo, and other plants. Then women begin the patterns. They may applique shapes cut from other cloths to form larger patterns. They may be embroidered with dyed raffia threads. Sections may be combined to form a patchwork look. Or any of these methods may be combined with the others. These are all usually found on the longer pieces termed skirts. The smaller pieces termed velvets are created by a combination of embroidery and a cut pile technique. Some designs are stitched onto the cloth. But for fill. An artist will pull several strands through the base cloth with a needle, then cut them, creating a natural pile with a knife. The fibers are not tied, but simply held in place by the tightness of the weave of the base cloth. The back of the piece usually bears no signs of the embroidery. What may be the most amazing fact of all. Is that the artist never sketches her designs ahead of time! She works from images in her mind, many times patterns that have been passed down for generations. They also usually have nam

Antique Quality Carved African Tribal Kuba Bwoom Mask Helmet Fur Beard&Leather
For sale here is an old authentic Kuba tribal wood carved helmet from the Republic of. It is made mainly of wood with the addition of tin forehead and leather back. The mask is decorated with different size and color beads and shells and has a long skin with fur beard. Will probably date to the early 20th century. Helmet masks of this kind are known among the Bushoong as Bwoom. This is one of the three so-called royal masks of the Kuba. The others being the Mwaash a Mbouy and the Ngaady a Mwaash. In reality it seems that the concept of a triad of"royal masks" has been grossly oversimplified. In truth. The Kuba/Bushoong produce a diversity of masks. And many can perform by themselves or in conjunction with lesser known initiatory or village masks. The Bwoom mask is quite possibly the autochthonous mask of the region. With variants ... morein nearly all of the Kuba sub-groups. Though Bushoong folk tales exist to explain its appearance as a pygmy or a hydrocephalic. The mask may have more in common with other large masculine helmet masks dispersed over the wider general area. Unlike other Kuba masks such as the Mwaash a Mbouy. Which is usually buried with its owner, the Bwoom may be passed down from one person to another. Thus it is not unusual to find old–in some cases ancient–Bwoom masks still being used by young dancers. This fine old mask has been rebeaded on numerous occasions and displays the more archaic"blindfold" style beading across the eyes. Which in more modern examples becomes thin and stylized. Source: Size- about 11 inches tall with out the beard. Add 16+ inches beard. 9 inches wide by about 11 inches deep. Condition- Please scroll up to look at the full report and the visuals. Beautiful Antique Kete Kuba Face Mask - Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Kete Kuba mask from the Western Kasai region. It shows a flat face with a large square forehead. Which shows influence from the neighboring Lele. The eyebrows, pierced eyes and triangular mouth are protruding. The bottom part of the face is covered with carved geometrical and scarification motives. The combination of a flat face with dramatic highly abstract features, as well a finesse of the carving make for a powerful mask. It also shows a nice, earthy patina on the forehead. Dimensions are 10x5.

BEAUTIFUL OLD KUBA PEOPLE PAINTED WOOD MASK FROM CONGO - 2
You are bidding on a Beautiful KUBA PEOPLE Painted Carved wood mask. With amazing design details, from Congo. Aside from the beautiful cloth mentioned above. The Kuba also produce carved wooden masks and figures. They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. In the 16th century. The Kuba peoples migrated from the distant north to their current location along the Sankuru River. When they arrived, however, they found that the Twa already lived there. The Twa were eventually absorbed into the Kuba Kingdom, but retained some independent cultural characteristics. The height of the Kingdom was during the mid-19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively isolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late ... more19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. At one time the Kuba had a religion based on ancestor worship, but this seems to have died out, although divination is still practiced in order to discover causes of evil. Success during hunting is recognized as a gift from the gods. It is not incidental that diviners often employ carved wooden hunting dogs as rubbing oracles in order to arrive at their knowledge. Dogs are seen throughout the region as responsible for delivering the will of the god, whether it be through hunting or through the diviner. Antique Kuba Congo Africa Hand Carved Wood Lukata Tukula Powder 11" Container
RARE. ANTIQUE, AND VERY UNIQUE KUBA HAND CARVED WOOD"LUKATA" CONTAINER, USED TO STORE RED"TUKULA" BODY POWDER FROM THE AFRICAN REGION OF THE CONGO FROM THE LATE 19TH TO EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY Very unique and odd piece of World-Wide ethnic folk art and culture. This piece comes to you from a recent auction purchase of a man who owned many pieces of hand-made African regional art. These Lukata style containers were highly prized in the Kuba people culture of the Congo in Africa and were used to store the red Tukula body powder that was applied to the body prior to significant ceremonies such as funerals. Many of these boxes/containers are normally very small in size and have been made without covers or they have been lost over time. Many with covers were"more expensive" to create in their culture. So this ... moreexample must have come from a more wealthy person or family. Many of the hand carved art and designs had important meaning to the Kuba people, but this has been since lost over time. This beautiful example is in wonderful. As found condition. It does have cracks here and there over this container, but this is due to the type of wood used at the time of creation, plus it being over 100+ years old. It retains the original reddish brown patina on the exterior which has many spots of original red Tukula powder residue, along with residue on the inside of the container, as seen in the photos. It stands 11" high with the cover attached and is about 4" wide at it's widest points. DON'T MISS OUT! This would make for a wonderful displayed piece of art work in your home or place of business. Especially if you have an interest in African art! A true one of a kind. Hand made piece of art! You will receive the exact pictured items being offered here in AS-IS condition. VERY OLD KUBA PEOPLE HEADDRESS FROM CONGO - DECORATED WITH BEADS, COWRIE SHELLS
You are bidding on a Rare and Old Beautiful KUBA PEOPLE Ancestral Headdress. Basket weave with fabric, hide and fiber form, decorated with cowrie shells and glass beads, from Congo. THIS ITEM LOOKS VERY OLD and the design details are amazing. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively ... moreisolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late 19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. 'RICH BROWN SHOOWAH KUBA PRESTIGE CLOTH -19 " x 24 "
KUBA ZAIRE PRESTIGE CLOTH"In the past. Kuba cloths of cut pile were prestige items, rarely worn but used as signs of wealth during life and at death. To make one could take up to a year. The base fabric was woven by men from softened raffia(palm leaf fibers) and usually left its light tan color. Women then applied two decorative techniques, embroidery- that is further stitching onto the base material- and plush or cut pile. Marc Ginzberg African Forms. The Boutalla are the more plush of the Kuba"square" textiles. And the designs are elaborate and exceptional. These textiles were used as currency, and as ceremonial offerings, in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was formerly Zaire. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm ... moretree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. The true jewels of textile art are the small Shoowa cut-pile cloths. Their compex interplay of geometric symbols. Inventive rhythm and balance, uniquely individual designs and tight"velvet"surfaces created objects so mysteriously alluring the Kuba people traded them as currency and were the standard by which a family's wealth and status were judged. These raffia cut-pile cloths, woven by men, were embroidered by women with no stitching visible on the back. Highly prized for their inventive patterns, they are further embellished with tight tufting, leading to the nickname"Kasai velvet" They were sewn together for ceremonial dress and covered royal stools. As a sign of status and to provide for the afterlife they were buried with kings or those fortunate enough to own many. 19" x 24" MEDIUM WEIGHT. THICK HIGH/LOW PLUSH& STITCHING.
