Bena Biombo- Democratic Republic of the Congo Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Pigment, vegetal fibers Height 36.1cm( 14.25in) without raffia beard ... moreLewis and Sonja Pate Collection. Whispering Pines, NC. Field collected in Zaire, early 20th cenury. Dr. Carlton W. Helen Moore Collection. Waldorf, MD. Fayetteville Museum of Art. Fayetteville, NC, 2001. Deaccessioned and sold to fund construction of the new museum in Festival Park. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their Kuba neighbors to the north. Describing an near identical mask form. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient tribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Dr. Carlton and Helen Moore Collection. The Pate& Moore Collection was generously donated to Fayetteville Museum of Art in 2001. Founded in 1972, the Fayetteville Museum of Art move

29 x 13 x 15 inches This stunning wooden trunk is from the Kuba area of the Congo. Africa. It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. Postal charges vary considerably with larger items and I can then get an accurate quote for you. You might find it a lot cheaper!

These textiles were used as currency, and as ceremonial offerings, in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was formerly Zaire. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm ... moretree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. The true jewels of textile art are the small Shoowa cut-pile cloths. Their compex interplay of geometric symbols. Inventive rhythm and balance, uniquely individual designs and tight"velvet"surfaces created objects so mysteriously alluring the Kuba people traded them as currency and were the standard by which a family's wealth and status were judged. These raffia cut-pile cloths, woven by men, were embroidered by women with no stitching visible on the back. Highly prized for their inventive patterns, they are further embellished with tight tufting, leading to the nickname"Kasai velvet" They were sewn together for ceremonial dress and covered royal stools. As a sign of status and to provide for the afterlife they were buried with kings or those fortunate enough to own many. 24" x 24" PLUSH VELVET.STITCHING, DYES CONDITION IS EXCELLENT TANS. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river along which the BaKuba live. The arts of the Kuba are known for their elaborate decoration and range of materials. Most famous for their monumental helmet masks, royal figures, and exquisite and stunning fabrics, the Kuba are also famous for their smaller, carved prestige objects where their true genius can be best appreciated. The palm wine cups and the lidded boxes, with their proud, strong faces and remarkable and mythological significant geometric designs, are of a great beauty. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries, and an expressive, even sardonic smile, this is an outstanding and beautiful example, lacking the sometimes overly-adorned beaded face. In fact, without the bulging forehead which identifies"Bwoom, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. ... moreThis is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Intricate woven fringes with cowries, and an expressive, face with prominent forehead and exaggerate nose and mouth, this is an outstanding and beautiful example. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an under slung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead, nose, and mouth. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries, and beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Without the bulging forehead which identifies"Bwoom. the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks

Vintage Congo Mask Scarification Rites Mid-Century Kuba Central African Tribe ??
Estate Fresh Vintage African Mask Measures 15" Tall x 9" wide x 3.5" 4.5" to nose. Inside mask depth, 3 in. Definitely a vintage mask, but likely made for the tourist trade, as it shows no evidence of having been used for ceremonial purposes. A very interesting example all the same, however, as a major motif here is there dieing traditional practice of scarification, practiced by many African cultures, though it is becoming less frequent with Westernization and Globalization. When used, scarification demarks different life stages and even has an erotic function. The Congo Basin and surrounding areas are known for the most complex scarifications. Having searched through multitudes of examples of African masks, though I haven't found this particular example, it seems that this most closely resembles the masks of the ... moreKuba, who reside in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I am not an expert on African masks by any means, but it is a very well-done and striking example. I would welcome any information that may add to attributing a tribe, style, or region. Tribal Kuba lg. dowry basket ethnographic art elaborate unique w cowrie shells
This AMAZING huge dowry basket came from the Kuba people of Zaier or the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is made of fiber and covered with glass beads and hundreds of cowrie shells. It is likely to have been given by a very well to do grooms family and was considered extremely valuable. It is more than 70 years old but still in very good condition. It is very heavy with the weight of shells and beads so the lid has sunk in slightly on one side. The carrying strap and top of the lid are covered with cowrie shells. The measurements are 30" tall and 24" wide at the top. Note the photos for more information on the appearance. This is a most unique piece and worthy of a place of honor in a collection.

Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: This was made in the Kuba Kingdom. Which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. Matisse was hugely influenced by these textiles, and had a number of them in his bedroom. This is your chance to purchase an original-Matisse made copies! I have written a book on them. Their art is prized both for the quality and care of their craftsmanship and for the astounding power of their design(Bwiin) which touched sensitivity of western collectors and artists. All artifacts are decorated with geometric design. As if its absence indicated poverty(Meurant, George, Showa Design, p.131) When one thinks of Kuba art their decoration patterns are usually the first image which occurs. Where representative ... moreart has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Improvisation and irregularity characterize the Kasai Velvets. This is because the weaver works without a plan or preliminary sketching, though the model can occasionally be displayed on the cloth in advance using black thread. Often the design is built up from memory, repeating the most common
KUBA TUKULA VESSEL POT CLOTH - ZAIRE
KUBA TUKULA VESSEL- ZAIRE Since the beginning of time. African women and craftsmen have produced both simple and figurative pottery with the techniques of sun baking, quick firing and cooling with water and air. These clay vessels are used in all aspects of life, for example, to store cool water, make food, serve food, and brew local beer. They are also used as ritual ceremonial objects, such as medicine pots and fertility mounds. Clay vessels are one of the most important tools used in daily life. There is no household anywhere in Africa that does not own vessels made of clay; yet they appear almost invisible and unimportant in most archeological research and in most museum collections. Two species of tropical tree. Cam wood(Bafia nitra) and African padauk(Pterocarpus soyauxii) are valued for their red heartwood and the red pigment derived ... morefrom it. The trees are found widely but production of the pigment, known in central Africa as tukula, is localized. The powder is a key ingredient in textile dyes both within communities which manufacture it and without. It is also valued as a cosmetic, to enhance and decorate carved objects, and in funerary rituals. Tukula is made by grinding a log with a stone or against another hardwood blank. The process is cooled and lubricated with water. The collected pulp is then dried. The Kuba use tukula powder both in dry and blended with palm oil as a paste. This old vessel appears to have been used for mixing this pomade. Its rounded bottom suggests it was created to mix products. The lovely. Deeply carved designs decorating its surface testify to the ritual significance of this rare object. This fine example measures 4.25 inches tall and has a top diameter opening of 7 inches.

KUBA AFRICAN ART SHOOWA CLOTH #1980 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA SHOOWA TEXTILE#1980 Tribe: Kuba- Shoowa. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Raffia Palm. Size: 24" 61 cm) x 18.5" 58.5 cm) Item: 1980 Condition: Good. Note: Ex. James E. Adkins Collection- Florida. USA. The basic material used in weaving panels of Kuba fabric is the fibre of the raffia palm(raphia vinifera) Which grows throughout the region. The outer layer of the young, plumelike leaves is split(frayed) and the fibres drawn. They may need to be twisted together and beaten to provide the threads used in the textiles. Weaving is the exclusive preserve of men, who work sitting at sloping looms. The finer the fibre, the stronger and tighter the woven fabric will be. The size of the woven panels is determined by the natural length of the raffia fibre; the individual fibres are not artificially lengthened. Hence. Panels ... moreusually measure between about 50 x 60 cm and a maximum of 100 x 100 cm. The cloths are soaked. Kneaded and beaten to make them soft and supple. The basic reddish tone of the velvet is obtained by dyeing the untreated fabric using a powder made from red wood. Yellow ochre background colours are more common, however. The cloths are embroidered by women. The technique of cut-pile embroidery consists of passing threads between the warp and weft threads with a needle. Without any visible stitches or knots. The threads are then cut to leave a pile of about 2mm on either side, with the velvet fibres are secured in the middle only by the tightness of the underlying weave. The Shoowa are real masters of this technique, which demands a great deal of skill. An enormous amount of work is involved in making a raffia cut-pile panel. It is a process that can take between several months and more than a year. So it is not surprising that cut-pile"velvet" cloths are treasured as objects of value. For embroidery incorporating more than one colour(a technique found almost exclusively among the Shoowa) The raffia fibres are coloured with plant dyes before embroidering. The roots of tr
