Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions, such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the Nganga, and to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. They produced wood sculptures representing royal wives, hunters, musicians, and healers. The figurine comes from the Kongo and shows the mixture of styles found so often in the southwest part of the country. One can find elements of both Vili and Yombe in this piece. This kneeling figure with hands bound behind him is a suppliant figure. Often appearing in carvings of ivory sceptres. This figure is carved from dense wood with a patina which reflects significant ritual ... morehanding.The theme of bound suplicant may be interpreted as a member of the society possessed by bad spirits. The individual represented is begging the ancestors to help chase away devil and sorcerers, sources of his misfortune. Lehuard's explanation may likely be close to reality. WWII Japanese Battleship Kongo Flag - Admiral Seizo Kobayashi
This is an extremely rare piece of WWII History. It is the original WWII Imperial Japanese flag flown on the battleship Kongo and was presented to the First Fleet Admiral Seizo Kobayashi. The writing in Kanji on the corner of the flag states the ship and Admirals name. I bought this in tokyo Japan from a dealer that bought it from his estate along with another flag that I will be listing later. The battleship Kongo was sunk in 1944 by the US submarine USS Sealion, she went down in 350 feet of water in the Formosa straight with 1200 souls. She was the only battleship sunk by a submarine and the last one sunk in any war since. The flag is made of a heavy material and the red is sewn on, the corners have a thick leather tab with original rope. There are some stains and some soiling, but no rips or mothing. This is an interesting figure for Sundi figures rare to find. Sundi style maintains its own exceptional charm as one can see on this individual piece.This example would be a strong addition to a collection. Among the Sundi such figures were known as powerful figures and used for protection against witches.They represent ancestral beings or elites There is no visible evidence that this interestingly carved figure served as a power figure. Known as nkisi, were used in cooperation with a spiritual healer, nganga, to invoke positive and negative forces on behalf of a client seeking his services. The power invested in the figure could either relieve the family of a burden or, in turn, place a burden on one's enemies. The stance used when carving this figure, with hand on hip, and an upturned head, is a typical gesture displaying confrontation and confidence. There are four main types of nkisi. Used for different purposes. Nkondi are fetishes of ill omen, usually brandishing a spear or a knife, while npezo are just as evil, but less menacing in attitude.
