From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Known for their many art forms, as well as filed, sharpened teeth among Kongo women, the Kongo are a large and diverse ethnic group, consisting of a number of smaller subgroups. Art and sculpture is made for a wide variety of reasons among these people. Unique to the Kongo's region are the'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, ... moreor blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. Nkisis aside, however, the Kongo produce many different styles of art, each of which have gained substantial attention and notoriety from collectors. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. This beautiful feminine maternity figure displays traditional Kongo styling. Especially in the facial features. The woman is seated cross-legged, cradling her infant gently above her lap. Her breasts are heavily marked with scarification marks, and her coiffure is tall and rounded, a common style in Kongo sculpture. The LB 2 hole puncher has a copper/bronze like finish in the paint. They came from an old law firm. Ie their postal scale had first class postage as 3 cents! I believe these hole punchers based on the style are from the 30s or 40s. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions, such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the Nganga, and to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection.
