Appointed Songye men and women wear a mask. Or kifwebe(singular in the Songye language) To maintain social order and during secret rituals(initiations, ... morecircumcisions, funerals) Bifwebe(plural) are believed to embody supernatural forces and are characterized by grooves or striations. Color. Shape, size and design patterns determine whether the mask is worn by a male or female. A kifwebe is often carved into a shield as a single piece of wood, including the handle, and used not only as a defense weapon but in ritual dances. Dimensions(inches) 20h x 14-1/2w x 7d. Weight: 4lbs. With an elongated neck. This shield was carved in an overall fan shape in a slight curve. Contrasting solid and geometric striations define the pattern. There are a few nicks along the edges. At base of neck, and in chin area. Both sides have minor surface wear including a few scratches. NOTE: Much of tribal art and artifacts has been exploited. Forged, faked, or otherwise misrepresented. No claims are made here regarding ethnic authenticity, age, ritual use, originality, rarity, patina, or provenance. Serious collectors may opt for private purchases through reputable dealers and pay for such documentable reassurances. The pieces offered here are from my private collection over 40-plus years. I valued them based on workmanship/craftsmanship, cultural interest, emotional appeal, educational potential, and decorative appeal. SHIPMENT: $12. Via USPS Standard service. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul. Some mask adorned with brown, tan and blue symbolizes nature as positive force. The facial elements are associated with animals.

Outstanding Songye Kifwebe Spirit Mask, DRC
In the Songye language. A mask is a kifwebe: this term has been given to masks representing spirits and characterized by striations. Depending on the region. It may be dark with white strips, or the reverse. The kifwebe masks embodied supernatural forces. The kifwebe society used them to ward off disaster or any threat. The masks. Supplemented by a woven costume and a long beard of raffia bast, dance at various ceremonies. They are worn by men who act as police at the behest of a ruler, or to intimidate the enemy. It can be either masculine, if carved with a central crest, or feminine if displaying a plain coiffure. The size of the crest determines the magic power of the mask. Mask, colors, and costume all have symbolic meaning. The dancer who wears the male mask will display aggressive and uncontrolled behavior with the aim of encouraging ... moresocial conformity, whereas the dancer who wears the female mask display more gentle and controlled movements and is assumed to be associated with reproduction ceremonies. The use of white on the mask symbolizes positive concepts such as purity and peace, the moon and light. Red is associated with blood and fire, courage and fortitude, but also with danger and evil. Female masks essentially reflect positive forces and appear principally in dances held at night, such as during lunar ceremonies and at the investiture or death of a ruler. The mask had also the capacity to heal by means of the supernatural force it was supposed to incorporate. The ritual of exorcism consisted of holding the sick man’s mask while a magician acted as if he were casting it into the fire. Kifwebe mask representations also appear on other objects belonging to the kifwebe society– grooved shields. For example, are adorned with a central mask. Measures- 13" X 7" Solid wood. Congo: Tribal used Old beautiful African Kifwebe mask.
This is a beautiful antique Luba face mask from the Katanga region in South East DRC. The Luba is a large tribe whose establishment as an organized power can be traced back to the 16th c. The Luba Empire then expanded through the 19th c. before eroding in part due to the European colonization. As a major center of power. The Luba civilization produced a vast number of political and royal insignia(staff, spears, knifes, axles, cups, headrests, stools, etc. as well as masks. Eastern Luba refers to a group located at the most eastern part of Luba territory– of mixed origin(Luba, Hemba, Buyu) and at the time vassals of the Luba King. Eastern Luba also carved a variety of objects(of power and ritual) and masks– which incorporate elements of the main Luba group and from the other originating tribes. The piece here belongs to the Kifwebe type– a ... moretype generally associated to the neighboring Songye although the Eastern Luba also produced such masks, in smaller numbers. It is round in shape and shows the characteristic engraved stripes radiating from the eyes, painted in red, white and black. It is made of a medium light wood. The mask is approx. 1 7 by 8 inches.

THIS OBJECT HAS BEEN CHEMICALLY ANALYSED BY THE LABORATORY OF MUSEUM D’ARTE E SCIENZA IN MILAN(http:www.africanartauthenticity.com/index-ita1.htm#Determinazione_dellet%C3%A0_di_oggetti_darte_africana_in_legno) WITH THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES: TYPE OF WOOD: RICINODENDRON RAUTANENII. AS STATED BY DUNJA HERSAK IN ITS“SONGYE MASKS AND FIGURE SCULPTURES” LONDON: ETHNOGRAPHICA 1985) SONGYE CARVERS OFTEN SELECTED MULELA(RICINODENDRON RAUTANENII) A SOFT WOOD, FOR KIFWEBE MASKS. COLOR, ANCESTRY ASSOCIATIONS, AND PERISHABILITY MAY ALL HAVE BEEN CONSIDERATIONS IN THAT CHOICE. FIRST, IT MAY BE SIGNIFICANT TO THE SELECTION CRITERIA THAT THE WOOD OF THIS TREE POSSESSES A DISTINCTLY ... moreWHITE GROWTH RING SECTION AND A RED SAP-FILLED CENTRAL CORE, THESE BEING THE TWO SIGNALLING COLOURS OF FEMALE AND MALE KIFWEBE RESPECTIVELY. THE SECOND POINT TO NOTE IS THAT THIS SPECIES WAS CITED AS ONE OF THE SERIES OF TREES PLANTED AROUND EPATA(THE CHIEF’S RESIDENCE) POSSIBLY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ANCESTORS. IN ADDITION TO MULELA, A FEW OTHER TREES SERVED THE SONGYE AS SOURCES FOR CARVING WOOD. THEY HAD IN COMMON THAT THEY WERE SOFT AND LIGHT IN WEIGHT BUT NOT PARTICULARLY DURABLE. THE IMPLICATION OF THE LATTER CHARACTERISTIC CREATES THE POSSIBILITY THAT WHAT SEEMS AN INHERENT DETRIMENT WAS, IN FACT, A MOTIVATING FACTOR IN THE CHOICE OF THAT WOOD. THEIR LOW DENSITY FACTOR INDICATES THAT THEY ARE ALL WOODS HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO INSECT ATTACK AND PRONE TO CRACKING AND OTHER DAMAGE. THIS ANATOMICAL PROPERTY OF THE WOODS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AMONG SONGYE AS IT SUGGESTS THAT THE MASKS ARE PERISHABLE AND REPLACEABLE OBJECTS. IN A GENERAL SENSE, ONE HAS THE IMPRESSION THAT THE LIFE AND MORTALITY OF THE MASKS COINCIDE METAPHORICALLY WITH THE CHANGING GENERATIONS OF RULERS AND THEIR REGIMES. AFRICAN Wood Ceremonial MASK #ZAIRE# Asynge Tribe KIFWEBE 1940s?
Here is a vintage wooden ceremonial African Mask. The gentleman from whom I purchased the mask collected these from his personal travels to Africa. I believe this mask comes from Zaire from the Asynge tribe and is a male Kifwebe style mask. It measures 24" tall by 9" deep by 7" across. It features a wooden handle which is carved as part of the entire mask. It is not a separate addition. It has a large crest on top and interesting carved teeth. Protruding eyes, and ears or horns on top? This is all carved out of one piece of wood. It retains original pigments. It has holes in the side where it probably had dried grass or hair at one time. It is rather heavy. This mask shows wear and has some cracks and tiny holes throughout.

Large Old Songye Kifwebe African Wood Mask Belgian Congo Carved
I acquired this great tribal mask at an estate sale. The man who it belonged to had many artifacts from extensive travel in Africa in the 1950's though the 1980's. This mask is large. Fantastic Ancient Songye Torso Figure, Kifwebe 'Mask'
Although the legs have eroded away. This torso with its Kifwebe masked face is a fine and powerful sculpture. It shows its age in the patina. The'magic' medicine(bilongo) receptacle in the stomach is now largely empty, indicating it has done its job and was'decommisioned' afterwards. 26cm Apart from the leg erosion. The condition is good with normal age and use related wear. The custom stand is not the best quality and I would have replaced it if space at home(and my wife! didn't dictate I sell. The figure itself is great. There are remnants of ceremonial decoration and libations especially in the Kifwebe grooves. It was an early piece in my own collection and I will be sad to see it go. But it needs a good collection home now. Postage UK £6 Europe £8.70 Worldwide 11.90
