AFRICAN CERAMIC WALL ART STYLIZED SONGYE KIFWEBE MASK D.R. CONGO - ZAIRE SIGNED
This mask was made by a student artist. Named Mabuanda, from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1988 in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo(at the time the country was actually named Zaire) Zaire then, and DRC now, is a poor country, unable to offer financial support to its youth. In order to support themselves and continue with their studies the students at the Academy sell their art. Many of them are very talented and produce beautiful art works which range from paintings, sculpture, ceramics and metalwork to large installations. When I worked in Zaire I bought from the students several pieces of art and used them to decorate my house. I will be moving to a smaller accommodation and have to part now with some of my collections. If you would like to know more about the plight of art students in Kinshasa, you can follow this link: http:www.krachtvancultuur.nl/en/current/2008/september/kinshasa. ... moreThe article includes a short video 1:27, between 49-54 sec of the video you can see a similar large ceramic mask made by a student. The mask for sale here is a ceramic. Stylized copy of a Songye Kifwebe tribal mask with characteristic. Striated design. The genuine tribal masks are carved in wood with striations stained white and sometimes red and white. I am listing separately another mask(that mask has been sold) by the same artist, which is similar to this one, but is painted white and black. The striking design of these masks makes them particularly suited as home accents for today's modern interiors. Dimensions: 11" long(chin to top) 8" wide(cheek to cheek) 3 1/4" in profile and weighs 2 lb. 6 oz. The mask has an indent underside the top for hanging on a nail. It is signed and dated on the underside"Mabuanda 88" If you are interested in african art you may want to check out my future listings. I will be listing items both by student artists and genuine tribal art objects from Liberia and Congo and surrounding areas I visited while working in the region. I will combine shipping. If you buy
