Ere Ibeji (Twins) Yoruba Nigeria wooden carvings trade bead earrings Bracelet
This is a pair of authentic Yoruba twins(ibeji) These come fresh from the estate of a Chicago dealer who kept a few items for her self over the years. She hadn't done any purchasing since the late 80's and claimed these were gifted to her in the 1970's. They had been in storage since the early 90's and are now up for your consideration. The male measures 12" and the female is just a 1/4" shorter. There is one small crack beginning in the females base. it is less than a half inch and is still tight. On earring looks to be missing. These are important representations to the Yoruba culture and should be treated with the utmost respect. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*05e54c%3E-13fb1127d13-0xef-

Yoruba Ibeji Twin Figures, African Tribal Creations, art Yorba mask Nigeria wood
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing ... moreit holds sacred. These figures adhere to the sculptural tradition of the Ibeji cult, with Ibeji meaning'twins' as the Yoruba hold twins to be sacred, and remarkably, as a people, have one of the highest incidences of twin births in the world. It is believed that twins are a single soul harbored within two bodies, and whatever ill befalls one twin, befalls the spirit of both. In the event that one twin dies, a frequent occurrence due to the high infant mortality rate in much of Africa, the soul(or half of the soul) residing within the other twin will be considered out of balance, causing life difficulties, etc. The parents of this surviving twin would have a figure commissioned by a local diviner, which would then be treated as would the surviving twin, and would be believed to become a vessel for the other half of the soul. In this way, the soul could remain balanced for the surviving individual. In the event that both twins were to die, a commemorative set of figures would be commissioned. The figures are, stylistically, produced similarly to other figures in Yoruba culture, but the young are generally depicted as adults, in the artist's interpretation of features po

Shango/Chango Dance Wand and Ibeji Pair, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
This auction is for an Oshe Shango dance wand and Ibeji pair with protective beads. Shango measures 18" by 41/2' Ibejis measures 9" by 3" The Shango is secured on a beautiful wooden base. Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated ... morewith magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. When thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers. Carved from a solid block of wood. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED. I SET EBAY TO AUTOMATICALLY OPEN A CASE IF PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS. Measures 24" in height by 8 1/2"

BACKGROUND The Yoruba people are concentrated in large urban centers. They live in southwestern Nigeria and south of Benin. Yoruba art varies remarkably according to area and the individual carver. The Ibeji statuette is a minor art form. The incidence of twin births is extraordinarily high among the Yoruba people. But so is infant mortality. If it happens, a carver must be called to make a small image, Ere Ibeji, of the dead twin of the same sex. Thus the Ibeji are Yoruba memorials to twins who have died. Twins are believed to be the children of Shango, the god of thunder and lightning. They are also thought to possess supernatural powers and share the same soul. The mother treats the image as though it were a living child, feeding it by smearing egg on its lips, washing its face, and making clothes to it. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them

Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has no

PAIR OF ANTIQUE IBEJI FROM YORUBALAND IN NIGERIA WITH ELABORATE HAIRSTYLES
This very nice pair of ibeji twins is unusual in that the male is wearing a short skirt. And the female shows pubic hair. Both have the traditional Yoruba facial scarification and detailed faces. We acquired them in 1973 when we lived in Lagos(the heart of Yorubaland) for four years The male figure is just over 11 inches high and about 4 inches wide and deep. The female figure is a foot tall and about 3 inches wide and deep. They are worn smooth, probably from much handling.
