Exquisite African Art- Luba/ Hemba Female Figure Bowl Bearer 0135 Luba/ Hemba Female Figure Tribe: Luba- Hemba Origin: D.R.Congo Approx Age: later 20th ... moreCentury Materials: Wood Dimensions cm: 29.5 tall x 8 widest point Ref. Number: 0135 A large skilfully carved kneeling Luba Hemba Bowl Figure. This kneeling female has elements of Luba& Hemba styling including an elaborate and typical Luba hairstyle and the facial features. This is a classic Luba– Hemba figure that would stand well in any collection. The image of a female figure holding a bowl is found among a number of stylistically related groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo either one of the Luba subgroups or neighbours subtlety influenced by Luba art and symbolism. The different forms and styles of Luba influenced sculptures generally served a common purpose as?objects of power? Ritual and ceremony. This figure and bowl serves to recognize the rank of a chief or senior lineage head as it would be a chiefly container of some prestige or serve local diviners holding various objects and substances required for divination. Both faces have a vertical row of brass tacks on the nose reaching to the forehead. The complex and elegant hairstyle of the larger female figure must be noted as a major factor of Luba aesthetics. Red bark powder was rubbed onto the surface of the figure as a cosmetic effect as are the beads she wears around her waist, neck and ankles. The female figure has geometric scarification on her stomach that is repeated in the design pattern on her back. From the website Zyama, The Hemba see the serenely closed eyes and the rounded face as reflecting the ancestor’s interior calm. This statue. Which measures approx. 14.25" tall, shows a bearded man with his beard divided into three sections, which we found very unusual for African art, which does not often show male facial hair, and none were separated into three sections, as this one has. ARTE AFRICANA Hemba Superb Hemba shrine figure. Material: Wood. Superb patina. Origin: Congo Old European collection Dimensions: height 27 cm Metal display included Check out my other items or only Auction T B Background Near the end of the 16th century. The Hemba began their migration from an area to the northeast, probably modern day Tanzania. In the 1800s under the direction of Niembo and his son, Myhiya, the Hemba moved into their current location along the Congo(Zaire) River. The Luba unsuccessfully tried to incorporate the Southern Hemba into their growing kingdom. The Luba did succeed, however, in greatly influencing the Hemba in numerous ways, including artistic styles. In the late 19th century, the Hemba were subjugated to raids by Arab slave traders and again by Belgian forces during colonization. The artistic style of the Hemba ... moreis very similar to that of the Luba. As many of their forms are borrowed. Art often results from the elaboration of otherwise simple utilitarian objects. Extensive wooden sculptures, which often represent the ancestors, predominate. The Hemba recognize a creator god(vidiye mukulu) and a supreme being(shimugabo) Worship is primarily carried out through sacrifices and offerings to ancestor shrines. Diviners play an important role in society. Often requiring that certain ancestors be appeased in order to establish balance in the community. Luba / Hemba Female Fertility figure
Here for your consideration. A lovely small Luba or Hemba fertility figure. I believe from the second half of the 20th century. Maybe older, it has been in my collection for some time. Originally must have been attached to something else as there are five holes in its base. Not sure what it was attached to.possibly a shrine or staff? The figure is beautifully carved and highly stylised. Her face is peaceful and serene. Geometric patterns are carved into her hairdo. Base of her back and her abdomen. Her arms, which are delicately carved are holding her breasts. On the top of her head there is a cup like shape carved which would have held something.possibly special potions with magic properties to do with fertility ceremonies? The figure has a deep rich glossy patina related to historical tribal use. She stands 17.3cm high. 5.6cm wide, and ... more6cm deep. I am thinning out my tribal art collection a little. This piece was purchased from a specialist tribal art auction at Taylor's Auctioneers. Montrose over twenty years ago. Please look closely at my photos as they form an important part of my description. If my postage quotes turn out to be excessive. I will always refund the buyer some of the cost. Hemba Singiti Hermaphrodite Figure
Hemba Singiti Hermaphrodite Figure This statue represents a standing male figure. The hands clasped on the abdomen. The sculpture, all in curves, expresses both an infinite softness and a great interiority. The features of the face are fine and regular: almond eyes, right and pointed nose, the curvilinear mouth following the oval of the chin. A cruciform motif carved in shallow deep relief decorates the coiffure. The Hemba place wooden ancestor figures. Called S ingiti. In small huts which protect the figures from the elements. Many of these huts contain several figures. The figure expresses the dependence of the world of the living on that of the dead, and is thus a funerary and religious symbol. It indicates the ownership of the land and the possession of social authority, both of which are based on the organization of clans and lineages. ... moreEven the wood, out of which many of these figures are carved, iroko. Possesses a religious significance. These statues are receptacles for the spirits of the dead as well as being the source of life force for their descendants. This is a unique ancestor figure from the Hemba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rich with symbolism. This dramatic sculpture has been given hermaphroditic features with its male genitalia and female breasts. Carved from fairly dense wood. This fascinating sculpture bears certain familiar characteristics of the Hemba with its handsome face, rather elaborate coiffure, angular jaw-line accentuated by an incised beard. Scarifications adorn the torso. A fascinating addition for any African Art collection. This fine example measures 24” tall and 6.5” wide.

She stands 8" tall by 2.5" wide. This is one of very few objects considered to be from the"Bula" school. Hemba Ibombo mask masque Tribal africa congo dogon yoruba songye fang kota lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer.
