Worn areas, some wood deterioration, overall condition very good. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND The Hemba people inhabit vast plains surrounded by high hills and bordered by streams. Rocks, and marshes. Farmers and hunters, the Hemba practice ancestors worship to justify the present authority and power of the chief of the clan. Among the Hemba, sculptured male bearded figures posed standing with their hands placed on the abdomen, at the sides, or holding the beard represent distinguished ancestors. They are considered to be portraits of specific individuals and were kept in the homes of the principal Hemba families as genealogical references. The hereditary chief of each clan is the keeper of the ancestor figures. As celebrant of the ancestor cult, the clan’s chief, surrounded by his people, communicates with the ancestors, recalling his great deeds and summoning his good will. He renders justice and his status as clan head means that he has the privilege of receiving numerous gifts. Female Hemba Figures are less common and very often carved with arms bent and both hands resting on chest. A custom base is included with this piece. It is important to properly exhibit a beautiful piece of art. The splendor of the piece cannot be fully revealed without a correct display. Custom bases can cost a minimum of thirty and up to several hundred dollars depending on its complexity and size. It is very difficult to locate a good stand maker regardless of price. Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. ... moreI love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey mask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. This is one of very few objects considered to be from the"Bula" school, after a village in south eastern Zaire near the confluence of the Luvua and Lukuga rivers where several objects of this style have been collected. Title, Luba-Hemba Male Figure Holding Bowl Bearer DR Congo African Miniature, Type of Object, carving. Figure, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic ... moreof Congo, People, Luba-Hemba, Materials, Wood Approximate Age, 20th Century, Dimensions, Height is 11 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, crack in base, Additional Information: This standing male figure holding a bowl comes from the Luba-Hemba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The figure recalls the famous bowl bearers from the Luba-Hemba. But the theme of bearer with bowl is common to the Luba and related peoples such as the Zela and Songye. The rerepresentation of male is very rare among the Luba. This could imply the figure was made by a Hemba artist and for use by the Hemba. Among the Hemba such figures are considered representation of ancestors. Among the Luba-Hemba. The bearer figure play the role of intermediaries between the living and the Vidye spirits of the spirit world. TThe function of the figure is to call. Beg or implore these spirits to protect, rescue and assist the living. The Vidye spirits speak through the mouth of the bear figure. Through these sculptures the diviner calls for the help and assistance of the Vidye spirits, the divinities of the divinations. Recommended Reading: Francois Neyt. BACKGROUND The Hemba people inhabit vast plains surrounded by high hills and bordered by streams. Rocks, and marshes. Farmers and hunters, the Hemba practice ancestors worship to justify the present authority and ... morepower of the chief of the clan. Congo: Rare and Old Tribal used African Hemba Animal mask.
Old and Rare Tribal used African helm mask from the Hemba. Congo. Hand carved. Height: 58 x 25 cm. In southeast DRC. The 90,000 Hemba people inhabit the right bank of the Lualaba River. This region presents vast plains surrounded by high hills and bordered by streams, rocks, and marshes. They are primarily subsistence agriculturalists whose main staples include manioc. Maize, peanuts, beans and yams. These crops are supplemented by small scale hunting and fishing done mostly by the men. Some alluvial copper is panned from the river and sold to outside markets. Their social organization is founded on a system of clans that brings together several families sharing a common ancestor. They recognize a creator god Vidiye Mukulu and a supreme being ShimuGabo. The Hemba practice ancestor worship. Not only to keep the memory of their great chiefs ... morealive, but also to justify the present authority and power of the chief of the clan; the latter has absolute authority over clan members and is in charge of several ancestor figures he keeps in his own hut or in a smaller, funerary hut. The chief of the clan renders justice and his status as clan head means that he has the privilege of receiving numerous gifts. As celebrant of the ancestral cult, the chief of the clan, surrounded by the people, communicates with the ancestor, recalling his great deeds and summoning his good will. He renders justice in his own home. And collects tributes for it. Along with medicine, law, and sacrifices. The ancestral cult penetrates all social, political, and religious domains. To possess numerous effigies is a sign of nobility. Secret societies such as Bukazanzi for the men and Bukibilo for the women counterbalance the chief of the clan’s power. Diviners play an important role in society, often requiring that certain ancestors be appeased in order to establish balance in the community. Hemba Monkey Mask Ibombo ya Soho Congo African
Title, Hemba Monkey Mask Ibombo ya Soho Congo African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo. People, Hemba, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 6 inches x 4.75 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, minor chips and scrapes, Additional Information: A Hemba Chimpanzee or monkey mask. Masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the Congo River. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o. ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey mask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea ... moreof death when they are danced at funerals. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. for example of the same type of the masks see Maria Kecskeisi(Ed. Kongo Yombe Baga Hemba Luba Yaka African Fertility Wood Figure Beads Lizard Skin
Up for sale is another great hand carved African figure. This is a great hand carved male Kongo/Yombe/Baga/Hemba/Luba/Yaka/Bayaka fertility figure. The figure sports a great blue bead necklace and some type of lizard skin making it a really cool looking figure. This piece was most definitely hand carved and is in great condition. My estimate would be that this is piece was made sometime in the mid 20th century. However I am not an expert and will let you be the judge of how old the piece is. This piece has a really cool look with the skin belt and beads and would look great in any room as a conversation starter or make an excellent addition to any collection. The figure stands approximately 11.5" tall. Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. This piece came from ... moreOpfer's auction in Baltimore Maryland and was part of the same collection that appeared in their March 27 and subsequent sales on Liveauctioneers(this piece was not sold during that sale. It came from one of their subsequent sales featuring items from this collection) This was from a living estate and the gentleman whose collection this and the other pieces I will be listing came from apparently worked a second job to fund his collection. Please see pictures and ask all questions prior to buying. I will be happy to supply additional pictures/information upon request. This is being sold as is. And returns are not accepted. Exquisite African Art - Luba / Hemba Female Figure Bowl Bearer 0135
Exquisite African Art- Luba/ Hemba Female Figure Bowl Bearer 0135 Luba/ Hemba Female Figure Tribe: Luba- Hemba Origin: D.R.Congo Approx Age: later 20th Century Materials: Wood Dimensions cm: 29.5 tall x 8 widest point Ref. Number: 0135 A large skilfully carved kneeling Luba Hemba Bowl Figure. This kneeling female has elements of Luba& Hemba styling including an elaborate and typical Luba hairstyle and the facial features. This is a classic Luba– Hemba figure that would stand well in any collection. The image of a female figure holding a bowl is found among a number of stylistically related groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo either one of the Luba subgroups or neighbours subtlety influenced by Luba art and symbolism. The different forms and styles of Luba influenced sculptures generally served a common purpose as?objects of power? ... moreRitual and ceremony. This figure and bowl serves to recognize the rank of a chief or senior lineage head as it would be a chiefly container of some prestige or serve local diviners holding various objects and substances required for divination. Both faces have a vertical row of brass tacks on the nose reaching to the forehead. The complex and elegant hairstyle of the larger female figure must be noted as a major factor of Luba aesthetics. Red bark powder was rubbed onto the surface of the figure as a cosmetic effect as are the beads she wears around her waist, neck and ankles. The female figure has geometric scarification on her stomach that is repeated in the design pattern on her back. The Luba are known for the variety of their sculptures including bowls, pipes, figures, drums, and ritual devices. Sources: Nooter. M. N. and A. F. Roberts. 1996.
