Very Old 'Guro' Ivory Coast African Mask- Inspired Demoiselles d'Avignon/Picasso
Auctioning a very nice Antique African Ivory Coast Tribal Mask. Believe it is called a'Guro' and has hand carved horns, ears& nasty looking teeth. This type of mask later influenced Picasso when he drew the faces in' Les Demoiselles d' Avignon' in 1908. It is a traditional mask. And appears to be authentic and very old. Hand carved with excellent detail. From a traveller who had it up for sale many years ago. Masks of this type may bring thousands and are in some very nice museum exhibits. No damage. About 15" tall with horns, its carved from a solid wood piece. Not very heavy, and would have been worn with a headpiece sewn into the holes at the edges. Vintage African wood carved mask from Guro tribe. Ivory Coast Size 35cm*14cm(13.8 inch* 5.5 inch) The Guro tribe(also called Guru or Kweni) inhabit Baoule in the Ivory Coast. And are among the most prolific of African artists. 1906 marked a turning point in Guro civilization. Up to that point they had been protected from colonization by the dense forests which inhibited European encroachment. But in 1906 the French began to overcome these obstacles. The Guro reacted by becoming more nomadic. Living off the land and staying on the move, the Guro were able to evade complete domination briefly; but ultimately in 1912 they were colonized by the French. Since that time the Guro have turned to subsistence farming. Guro villages are not lead by a chief. Vintage African. Ivory Coast, Guro Zamble mask, wood with painted designs, 15 1/2" H. Zamble masks are said to represent a mythical being with traits borrowed from both the antelope and leopard. Mask has antelope horns, teeth of the leopard, and wonderful abstract red and white designs overall, including images of scarification on the forehead. A beauty! It is approx. 15 inches long, 8 inches at its widest and sits approx. 6.5 inches away from wall. See photos for chipping and natural scarring around the mouth. There is natural cracking on the right side of the jaw line and inside on the chin area. There is typical rubbing and wear that is expected with these pieces that have traveled far. Been used often and handled much. They are authentic and original without alterations. You can expect age cracking, natural pigment, patina and sometimes residual fire smell if they were used near ceremonial fires. Which plays a large part in many mythologies of the area- perched on top. Based on its characteristics, I believe that this mask originates with the Guro people, however it could also come from the related Yaure or Baule tribes. The mask has some wear. This mask is a real beauty. It has a white face and a very pronounced forehead. There is a strong nose. And large lips and eyebrows. The inside of this piece is rough hewn, which is cool when you think about how long it took someone to gouge out something like that. The eye slits are rectangle shaped, and the hair is pulled back in rows. This measures approx. 8" x 9 3/4" x 5 1/4" What a great addition to a collection, or even a great start to a collection. We are calling this shabby chic due to the overall condition. There are several hair lines, and some rubs to the face here and there. Still a wonder to look at. Good luck! The Dye ceremony or dance group consists of a number of animal masks that are fearsome and powerful. The Dye dance troop consists of hyena. Elephant, buffalo, Roan antelopes, hippopotamus, pig, monkey and dog. Dye masks are violent in their behavior and are not to be seen by females or children who lock themselves indoors or leave the village when the masks appear in the early light at daybreak. In the past the masks served as the highest display of male authority dispensing justice and exercising social control. The Dye masks are supreme symbols of male authority and were prominent in the past whereas today they still dance in the village but mostly appear at the funerals of prominent persons. The broad flattened horns and painted features reinforce the idea of abstracted power as Dye becomes the embodiment of male energy and potential with all of its attendant danger to women and the uninitiated. Ivory Coast Each measures 43cm*20cm(17 inch* 8 inch) The Guro tribe(also called Guru or Kweni) inhabit Baoule in the Ivory Coast. And are among the most prolific of African artists. 1906 marked a turning point in Guro civilization. Up to that point they had been protected from colonization by the dense forests which inhibited European encroachment. But in 1906 the French began to overcome these obstacles. The Guro reacted by becoming more nomadic. Living off the land and staying on the move, the Guro were able to evade complete domination briefly; but ultimately in 1912 they were colonized by the French. Since that time the Guro have turned to subsistence farming. Guro villages are not lead by a chief. My scale computes to the nearest gram and it has been tested and calibrated. A note to silver scrappers: There are those on Ebay who will claim that the weight of an object is less than advertised and demand a rebate after the auction has ended. This is an ongoing trend and these individuals seem to complain if silver prices go down between the day they buy and the day they receive. When one melts silver one can lose as much as 5% of the weight in the smelting process and I can not be held responsible for weight lost after melting. I do not generally melt anything that is well made as it makes little sense to me. So any potential loss should be considered before purchasing my items. All my items are measured with a standard tape measure and are rounded off to the quarter inch. I attempt to be as accurate as possible. But odd surfaces can prove difficult sometimes as I lack a pair of calipers. With over a thousand items in my store. Errors do occur, albeit infrequently. Large Ritualistic Carved Wood Guro Helmet Mask African Tribal Art Hornbill Bird
Large ritual mask or head dress from the Guro people of Cote d'Ivoire. Used in dancing ceremonies. This piece features a deep brown painted concave face with protruding forehead and mouth. An intricate carved bird-probably a hornbill, which is a spiritually powerful symbol- sits atop the head and a long beard of rafia is attached to the bottom of the mask. The slightly shiny patina shows desirable signs of age, wear and use. The mask is in good condition overall. However there is a crack running across the nose of the mask and down to the chin. Mask– Goli(kplekple) Baule/ Guro. Ivory Coast Baule masquerades include four types of cosmology-centered masks classified as; Goli glin. Goli kpwan; the circular and horned Goli kplekple; and within certain villages the Goli dandri. The festival includes the four masks. Music played on special instruments and palm wine. It is a relatively new dance for the Baule, who adopted it from their neighbors the Wan people less than 100 years ago. The Wan people are the originators of Goli masking. Antique African Guro Baule red tribal mask bust from Ivory coast RARE!
This is an absolutely amazing piece. The head is carved from a solid piece of incredibly heavy dense wood. The cracks you are seeing are from age. This piece is incredibly solid and dense. It's designed much like a bust sitting on top of an old wicker basket it's attached by old canvas or burlap. It's decorated with shells and old bells. The pony tail is very interesting. At the end of the wooden head there is a piece if black fabric hanging and inside is hair. Not sure if it's animal hair or human hair but there are black and gray strands coming out of the end. It measures 17" tall by 13" wide and 13" deep

Damage/Repair, General wear, Additional Information: A beautiful passport mask with a special feature: the carved human face painted in yellow is surmounted by a bird ... morehead. Miniature masks often called"passport" masks are found among the various peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast. Including the Dan, Yacouba, Gio, Wenion(We, Guere) Geh, Loma, Konor, Bete, Yaure, Guro, and Baule people. Sharing a wide variety of uses they are the personal masks of initiated adult men and would be carried on their person or kept on personal shrines in the home. They carried small"passport" masks in leather pouches when they traveled. Such miniatures serve to mark the passage of an initiate into the male' s secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. The small masks may be presented at meetings of senior members of the male's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Divinerâs would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Small masks placed on shrines would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these passport masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after.

The Baule and Guro styles are difficult to separate. The Guro style. However, has one or two distinguishing marks: the face of the human mask is usually longish while the forehead and bridge of the nose form an elegant S-shaped profile. The tattoo pattern cut in relief on forehead and cheeks is a repetition of the short protruding tattoo marks on the men’s faces. There are polychrome, as well as black and brown polished masks. There is a much stronger tendency than with the Baule to add animal features to the human face. In some the nose forms an animal-like beak. Vintage African. Ivory Coast Guro Antelope, Zamble Mask w/ Iron Stand made especially for the mask's display. 18.5 inches. Zamble masks represent a composite mythical creature with antelope horns. Leopard's teeth, and human scarification markings painted in red and white, with blue outlines. The designs and colors are rich and lovely. The mask is in very good condition for its age on the front. But does show signs of use, especially where the ropes were tied to the sides and top of the mask to hold it to the dancer's head. The sides are worn down, and the hole on the top that used to hold the ropes around the head is cracked. However, this is normal wear and tear, and adds to its authenticity of a real, used, African object. I purchased the object myself. In this exact condition, in the late 1980s in Ivory Coast. It was made much ... moreearlier than that, because it already showed signs of authentic wear. After buying it, I had an iron stand made professionally for it. The Dye ceremony or dance group consists of a number of animal masks that are fearsome and powerful. The Dye dance troop consists of hyena. Elephant, buffalo, Roan antelopes, hippopotamus, pig, monkey and dog. Dye masks are violent in their behavior and are not to be seen by females or children who lock themselves indoors or leave the village when the masks appear in the early light at daybreak. In the past the masks served as the highest display of male authority dispensing justice and exercising social control. The Dye masks are supreme symbols of male authority and were prominent in the past whereas today they still dance in the village but mostly appear at the funerals of prominent persons.
