This vintage Baoule Ndoma or Guro Gu mask from the Ivory Coast is getting rarer and rarer. Most all you see. Now-a-days, are modern rip-offs. This one has seen some hard times throughout the years. It is starting to get a crack at the top of the mask and at the bottom in the beard area, and there are a couple small losses. but on the whole for its age it is in good shape. It might also be from one of the other nearby tribes. As they shared ideas with each other. These"Portait Masks" depicted the owner, so this one might have been a crab fisherman with a beard. Within the Baule tribe the antelope was respected. Thus the antelope horns Other possible tribes in the area are the Dan and the Senuofo who are spread between the Ivory Cost and Mali. This is an outstanding ethnographic relic imported from the Guro tribe of Ivory Coast. Africa. It's a fantastic ritual mask featuring a scarified red face surmounted with a snake eating a bird. The snake's body and tail curve around the face making this especially powerful. The mask has been hand-carved from a heavyweight wood and painted with bold color. The daily life of the Guro is dominated by secret societies and by a belief in protective spirits, to whom the Guro used to build shrines and create figures. Which is responsible for social, political, and juridical questions, decisions of peace and war, policing tasks, and the detection of destructive forces, as well as appearing at funerals of its members. This male society uses a variety of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic masks, some fitted with staff-like superstructures, all ostensibly fatal for women to view. Village life is regulated by a council of elders, representing each main family, and by secret societies. The art of the Guro is distinguished by extreme refinement. Large Vintage 30" Black Ram Themed African Guro Wooden Mask Art
This is a black wooden Guro mask. There is a ram at the top and it is made of painted wood. i am not sure exactly where it was made. But these masks are usually made in the ivory coast. It is in good condition with some loss of paint on the various edges. It seems as if the hoop under the chin was broken off at some point and then glued back on. It is 30"x 11"x 7" I tried to take pictures of some of the types of paint loss as well as the seams where i think it may have broken. Approx. 7.5 inches at its widest and sits approx. 5 inches from the wall. It has the sculpted coif, slender nose and facial tattoos that are typical of this tribe. This mask was found in the early 60's and is believed to be fairly old. The prior owner is who acquired it from the tribe itself. Differentiating styles of the Guro tribe found on this mask include the long face which forms an S-bridge with the nose and the peculiar tattoo marks cut in the forehead and the cheek. The Dye ceremony or dance group consists of a number of animal masks that are fearsome and powerful. The Dye dance troop consists of hyena. Elephant, buffalo, Roan antelopes, hippopotamus, pig, monkey and dog. Dye masks are violent in their behavior and are not to be seen by females or children who lock themselves indoors or leave the village when the masks appear in the early light at daybreak. In the past the masks served as the highest display of male authority dispensing justice and exercising social control. A lovely Vintage Tribal Mask from the Guro Tribe on the Ivory Coast. We've had this mask for many years now and have really enjoyed it. But we're downsizing and need to find it a new home. We were told at the time of purchase that it was very old. The upper lip is missing a small portion, but the carver must have done it as it was painted over at the time.it is in very nice condition with very few imperfections!

This amazing antique mask, carved by the Guro tribe on the Ivory Coast, measures approximately 16“ long top to bottom, and is in excellent antique condition. Here’s a little information on the tribe that carved the mask: The Guro tribe(also called Guru or Kweni) inhabit Baoule in the Ivory Coast, and are among the most prolific of African artists. 1906 marked a turning point in Guro civilization. Up to that point they had been protected from colonization by the dense forests which inhibited European encroachment. But in 1906 the French began to overcome these obstacles. The Guro reacted by becoming more nomadic. Living off the land and staying ... moreon the move, the Guro were able to evade complete domination briefly; but ultimately in 1912 they were colonized by the French. Since that time the Guro have turned to subsistence farming. Guro villages are not lead by a chief. A distinguished village elder may be designated to mediate disputes and serve as liaison to neighboring tribes; but that elder will lack the authoritarian powers of a true chief.
