Small beads on body appear to have been strung and then cemented to body appearing very old and primitive. One of the more interesting dolls I have see in a while. Namchi(Namji) dolls. Among the Namchi people of Cameroon, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are played with by young children. When beads, cowrie shells, bells, coins, and other ornaments are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. The girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. There is some breakage at top of head where beads attach but otherwise in quite fine condition. Approx. Measurements: 9" including base. Made in: Cameroon. According to previous owner. Tribal Yoruba divination Agere Ifa bowl and lid with Shaman, ethnographic old
This powerful Yoruba divination statue and container was used for ceremonies to heal or resolve problems among other issues for the Yoruba people by their diviner. Divination cups and bowls are found all over Yoruba land often decorated with faces or animals. The bowl is dedicated to Ifa. The contents are most frequently saw dust. Cowrie shells, and palm nuts with which the diviner evokes spirits to assist in the ceremony and it's success. Sixteen palm nuts are also used for this purpose. Measurements are 19" tall by 10+" wide. This piece has a considerable amount of age and authority. An amazing piece for the astute collector. The kneeling position is a sign of respect, divination and a submission gesture. The bowl he is holding on to is also known by the name of"olumeye" which means one who knows respect.

African Woodcarving Femsle Bust Mid-Century Woman Sculpture Ethnographic Nude
Beautifully carved rendition of a young woman with stylized coiffure and jewelry reminiscent of that seen in the traditional cultures of West Africa. Its stunning three-dimensional silhouette can be viewed from any angle. Rough scrape marks of the sculpting tools form the cornrows. Crest, and chignons of the hair, in the eyes, in the neck jewelry and the simulated paint patterns on the cheeks of the face. In contrast, the shoulders, breasts, earrings and face are smooth and flesh-like. Original wood carving. Unsigned. Solid piece of a reddish brown wood. Kuba tribal bark cloth boys initiation costume painted DRC ethnographic art
This is a very fine handmade boys bark cloth initiation costume. It is in very good condition but has been used. Fiber thread is loose in one spot but other than that it seems in better than average condition. Archaeologists discovered a painted pattern of black. White and red among the ruins of an 11,000 year old house in northern Syria making it the oldest wall painting ever discovered. There was a purpose in having paintings that resembled the first found in a house in a pre-agricultural site. The house was likely lived in by hunter-gatherers with its geometric designs and striking use of color. These early paintings have remarkable similarity to the modern painted bark cloth such as this costume. The Kuba are known for their exquisite textile work as well as their carving. African tribal Luba carved wood caryatid headrest sculpture ethnographic art 09
Luba people. Also called Baluba are a Bantu-speaking people who inhabit a wide area extending throughout much of south-central Congo. Luba headrests are intricately carved, serving as a pillow that is cool and comfortable in their tropical climate, and protecting their elaborate hairstyles by raising the head above the bed. Headrests are items of great personal attachment for the Luba people and were also seen as the seat of dreams. The Luba consider dreams as prophetic, foretelling important events, providing warnings and communicating messages from the other world. This lovely and well used headrest measures 8" wide and 7" tall. Very minor cracks and chips which are to be expected with an item of this age and amount of use and some signs of small repairs.

Honestly. I have no idea what this is, but it sure was an exciting find! Packed up in a dusty box, this striking piece appears to be a helmet mask, but from where and how old I can't tell you. It is large enough for an adult to wear, and looks to be in excellent condition. There is a crudely repaired and painted spot on the underside that is not much of a condition problem, and otherwise there are little scuffs and nicks here and there.
