They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. In the 16th century. The Kuba peoples migrated from the distant north to their current location along the Sankuru River. When they arrived, however, they found that the Twa already lived there. The Twa were eventually absorbed into the Kuba Kingdom, but retained some independent cultural characteristics. The height of the Kingdom was during the mid-19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively isolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late 19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. The girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. Vintage Ethnographic Carving of a Slave with Drinking Vessel
A very unusual ethnographic carving of a Slave taking a drink. The man is hand carved from a single piece of wood and is in the figural form of a Slave Man taking a drink from a sea shell shaped vessel. There is a chain around one ankle as if he was tethered and he is holding a machecte type knife. I am not sure of the origin of the carving but it is Ethnographic in nature. Overall dimensions are 13 5/8" high x 8 3/4" long. The carving is in very good overall condition and retains the original finish. The only thing to note is minor wear to the finish mainly n the sea shell, see photos. The carving would be perfect in an Ethnographic collection. I believe this is what they call a Dan Mask, but I'm not an expert. It is fairly large at about 17" X 9.5" with the hair and beard being about 3-4" when laid flat. It is carved from wood with a very dark brown finish inside and out. Fringe of hair and beard appears to be made of hemp or some other natural fiber and is fastened with string woven through holes in the outer edge of the mask. There are a couple chipped teeth and a larger chunk missing from the chin with a hairline crack forming from there. The hair is curled up a bit in spots. If you don't like that look. You could probably wet it down and spread it out with some weight on it and let it dry out ... morein a more uniform manner. Overall. It has good patina and the look of an antique item. Tribal Bark Painting BaKuba Zaire ethnographic art, home decor 001
Archaeologists discovered a painted pattern of black. White and red among the ruins of an 11.000 year old house in northern Syria making it the oldest wall painting ever discovered. There was a purpose in having paintings that resembled the first found in a house in a pre-agricultural site. The house was likely lived in by Hunter-Gatherers with its geometric designs and striking use of color. These early paintings have remarkably simlarity to modern painted bark cloth such as this. The BaKuba or Kuba of Zaier or D.R.C. are known for their exquisite textile work. The men soak the bark in water then beat it against a smooth tree trunk to expand it and make it softer. Once the bark is dry the women apply patterns using dye from plants. This piece measures 13" wide and 26" long and is in good condition.
