Here is an interesting old piece of tribal art! This is a piece that we rescued out of a dumpster a few years ago when a couple in their 90's moved ... morefrom their home into an assisted living facility. The couple had traveled extensively back in the 1930s and 40s and we feel that this is probably something that they picked up on their travels during that time. Our research indicates that this piece was made by the master carvers in the middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. He stands an impressive 39" tall and is made of one solid piece of wood. His eyes are made of shells. And on the"hook" part are white stones or shells. Although he's a bit dusty looking. He has no cracks, mildew, or repairs. This type of figurine would have been used to hang food from the rafters in order to keep it safe from rodents and other creatures. An interesting piece! An excellent addition to anyone's display or collection. Expert packaging. Gentle handling, and speedy US shipping are all FREE! Make sure to read the on our"About Me" page before buying. African tribal Yoruba Ibeji twin pair ethnographic art, decor, sculpture Nigeria
The Yoruba. With a high rate of multiple births, feel that twins are very special and powerful. If a twin dies, a figure dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to be the earthly abode of the spirit of that twin. The figure is nurtured by the mother and/or the surviving twin. Different hair styles, scarification, figure, shape and style of carving indicate the origin of a figure. Often dressed and fed they are highly revered. The taller of the two measures 10.5" by 5" wide. It has a crack on the left side of the face and a small crack on the base. The other also has a small crack on the base. Items of this age almost always show signs of the many years of use and handling. These twins are adorned with glass beads, cowrie shells and iron wrist rings or bracelets. The cracks are shown in the attached photos.
African tribal sculpture bronze ethnographic art, zoomorphic medicine container
This truly spectacular bronze work of art is from the Lobi of Burkina Faso. The workmanship of this cast treasure is a wonderful example of the ability of these tribal people to do amazing objects that reflect both their talent and their belief system. The container on the back of the animal(don't know exactly what animal) was most likely used for medicine. The animal on the lid was intended to protect the contents and the larger animal was likely to have brought the medicine from the ancestors or the spirit world. This piece is very unusual and in perfect condition. Thought to date back earlier than the 19th century it is a true collectors item. It measures 8 3/4" high and 3.5" from side to side and 11" in length. Lid fits securely. RARE!

Traditionally, this mask would have been worn during"Dama, a commerative ritual for Dogon men.The Dogon people have created more than eighty mask types to represent characters in their cosmic myths. tribal wedding vessel for palm wine ethnographic art, collectible, Hemba Zaire 2
This lovely and sentimental wedding vessel is an important part of a Hemba wedding. The bride and groom share palm wine from this vessel with each drinking from either side. Residue of the palm wine still remains on the interior. The carving is amazing. So smooth and graceful. You will see the front. The back, the bottom and the interior in the photos. The top of the vessel is adorned with a carved figure representing ancestors and their blessings. This offering and sharing of the palm wine further bonds the couple and seals the marriage. Very elegant and significant. The measurements are 6" wide, 3" high and 3.5" from front to back including figure. The cross hatch carved design on one side represents the male and the smooth side represents the female. In this instance the ancestor in the center, touching both sides like a ... morebridge, serves to unite the couple. 260.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2B%3E260-13fe7591293-0xff-

Vintage F.A. Pan Akus Balinese Carved Statute of Ethnographic Female- 42 inches
The F.A. Pan Akus Trading Company was well know between 1940-1960s for handling the sales of high quality Balinese carvings. This beautiful statute is bottom stamped F.A.Pan Akus. Indonesia. The lady stands 42 inches high which includes the 5.5 inch pedestal she stands upon. The diameter of the pedestal is 7 inches. She is posed with her left foot slightly in advance of the right, left arm to her side and her right arm raised with an object which may be a pineapple. Her clothing is draped around her, with the carver exquisitely handling not only the gentle draping effect, but also the design of the fabric as well. Her slightly angular face is in repose and her head is crowned with a headdress. The defect I have found is a small piece of the end of part of a feather or leaf in her head dress is missing on the back. This is a statute carved ... morefrom a solid piece of wood and the carver makes excellent use of the grain. Other than noted, it is in excellent shape and weighs 27lbs 4 ounces. Photographs do not reflect the richness of the wood color, as the flash washes it out. Photos 2& 3 are closer to the color. Photos 5,6, 7 show the figure in the back in three stages. The statute will be crated before shipping. Seller will insure at seller's cost. Domestic purchasers only. EBay will estimate the mailing costs based upon shipping weight and destination. No handling charges.

African tribal Baule mancala owari game board, female figure, ethnographic art
Mankala is one of the many names given to any of a vast variety of basically similar games played in many widely spread parts of the world. The common feature of all these games is that they are played with pebbles. Beads or large seeds on regularly patterned playing areas or boards consisting of a number of pits arranged in two or four rows. These playing areas may be actual wooden boards or they may be holes scooped in the sand or even carved into a solid rock. The generalized game is played from West Indies to Hawaii and from Turkey to South Africa. This broad belt includes all of Africa, the Middle Ease, India, South East Asia, Indonesia, East Indies and the Philippines. The similarities between all the varieties of mancala leads to the inescapable conclusion that at sometime in the distant past they all originated in one place. This ... morepiece is from Burkina Faso and is also referred to as owari or mancala owari. It measures 25.5" in length, 12" wide and 9" tall with 12 pits which is most common in Africa. The special seeds used for this particular game board are included. A very interesting piece, more than just a game board this piece is art and extremely unique and a real find for the collector!
Tribal Yoruba divination board, agere and tapper set used ethnographic art
Among the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria divination objects were(are) used to communicate with gods. Spirits and ancestors to understand or influence one's fate. The divination tray is referred to as opon Ifa on which the sacred signs, Odu, were traced. Bowl or agere Ifa contained the sixteen palm nuts to be cast. Beaded bags were carried with tools and supplies inside and tappers called Iroke were tapped to summon and greet the spirits of Orunmila and Eshu. The quality of the pieces enhanced the diviner's status and inspired confidence in their skill. Ifa or divination is practiced to explain misfortunes and help to prevent them. The diviner in consulting a deity, manipulates the sixteen palm nuts, reads the pattern they form and marks the results on the divination board, Opon Ifa, which is sprinkled with a special wood dust. The marks ... moreindicate versus that should be chanted as prayers. It is unusual to find a complete set such as this. All of the pieces are in very good condition showing years of use. The bowl or agere Ifa has been repaired as shown in the last photo. This is an exceptional trio and most worthy of any serious collection. The next to last photo shows a carved out square that holds medicine during ceremonies. The board measures 14" by 7.5" the tapper 14" in length and the bowl or agere 9.5" tall and 7" at the widest point.

Sierra Leone in 1898. The photograph was discovered lastyear in an old album kept by a former British officer. It was taken byLieutenant Arthur Greer, a Lieutenant in the West Indian Regiment. This is the militaryunit that fought Bai Bureh’s warriors in the Port Lokko region during the HutTax War. Arthur Greer was later killed in the Siege of Coomasie in the GoldCoast. SierraLeoneans are very fortunate to have this authentic photograph of theircountry’s greatest hero. Until now. The only image of Bai Bureh made during hislifetime was a pencil sketch that a British army officer, named H.E. Green, made soon after his surrender. The drawing shows the great warrior dressed inhis ronko gown sitting on a shipping crate, and leaning forward in what seemsto be an attitude of defeat. Green’s Bai Bureh is a tired and exhausted oldman, seemingly depleted of his physical powers. We will never know if Lt.Green’s drawing is a true depiction of Bai Bureh soon after he surrendered, orif Green drew him that way to make the point that British forces had not justdefeated Bai Bureh, but also rendered him into a state of despair. In otherwords, we don’t know if Green’s sketch is an

Tribal Kuba lg. dowry basket ethnographic art elaborate unique w cowrie shells
This AMAZING huge dowry basket came from the Kuba people of Zaier or the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is made of fiber and covered with glass beads and hundreds of cowrie shells. It is likely to have been given by a very well to do grooms family and was considered extremely valuable. It is more than 70 years old but still in very good condition. It is very heavy with the weight of shells and beads so the lid has sunk in slightly on one side. The carrying strap and top of the lid are covered with cowrie shells. The measurements are 30" tall and 24" wide at the top. Note the photos for more information on the appearance. This is a most unique piece and worthy of a place of honor in a collection.
