Comprised of a wide strip of rough woven black cotton or hemp based cloth with apertures periodically worked into the weft forming a white zigzag, bordered in tan coloured cloth sew to the sides and embroidered with red lines running diagonally across the black textile forming diamonds and long triangles and punctuated with cowries. Staining and wear(see photos) It measures approx. 72" long and 12" wide. Although many cultures use cowries as both currency and ornamentation for textiles and decorative arts. The weave of this sash or belt has closest parallels to India and Nagaland(tribal Assam) where cowrie use is also recorded. A further possibility would be Malaysia or Indonesia, e.g. Kalimantan, Borneo, Sumba, etc. however the textile traditions of southeast Asia tend to be much more refined and complex in design as well as incorporating many more cowries into the decoration, whereas in this example the use is very sparse and perhaps indicative of a more valued commodity as in landlocked Assam. Used, Ethnographic, Michocan Mexico/Mexican Mask, Reversed Painted Glass Eyes!
Here is a lovely. Ethnographic, used dance mask from Michocan Mexico Eyes are done in a labor intensive glass. And are reverse painted. They are exceptionally real! Mask is done in a light wood that was easier to carve than most. The trade-off being that the wood is therefore more fibrous/scratchy. So the carver coated the reverse of the mask in a wax to protect the dancer's face. Red ribbon which is correct to the region and similarly seen across the forehead in similar regions. Such as the dance of the Umbrella Salesman etc. Evidence of use. And wear on the ribbon, especially where it meets the mask. Ever so slight shine/wear to the chin area of the mask as well. A few nicks as evidenced in the pictures. Hairline crack down the left of the mask; Not causing structural issues. The mouth and nostrils have both been carved to allow the ... moredancer to breather freely and the nose cavity deeply recessed all evidencing its intended use. 8 inches x 7 x 4.5 deep- This again attesting to the use as the mask fits perfectly to an average face. The gold tooth is establishing nobility/wealth for the character and the European decent. The grey hair is noting age. My assumption is this is mean to be a"old man mask" Likely circa 1990; The"stenciling" of the eyebrows is a newer technique.
