Among the Namchi people of Cameroon, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are played with by young children. When beads, cowrie shells, bells, coins, and other ornaments are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. The girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. There is some breakage at top of head where beads attach but otherwise in quite fine condition. Approx. Measurements: 9" including base. Made in: Cameroon. According to previous owner. Chips, scratches, Fang Byeri reliquary figure Gabon Guinea African Additional Information: This sitting male reliquary figure is carved in a Fang sculptural style shown in a gesture of offering. A motif seen in other examples of Fang sculpture. The figure is covered by a black oily surface that was the result of palm oil and copal resin being applied to the figure. The heart shaped face, facial features and body shape locates the figure among the Ntumu, a northern Fang sub-group. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200.000, who stretch from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems and the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines where memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones were under the care of an elder known as the Esa. Shoulder cloth Biboki District hand spun cotton natural morinda dye 8.5- 71" 147 grams. Late 20th C TRADITIONAL TRIBAL TEXTILE You are looking at a ceremonial shouldercloth/ sash from the Biboki District of West Timor. The cotton is a very fine. Even hand spun with natural vegetable dyes. Ikat means literally"to tie" and the motif is tie dyed into the threads before they are woven together. The three color ikat is achieved by tying off all the white portions of the design and then dying red. The portions that are to remain red are then tied off and the combination of the indigo over red yeilds the brown shade. Each color requires several rounds in the dye vat to achieve a good color saturation. If you look closely at the detail j peg you can see how the color changes on one thread as it meanders across the cloth. The motif ... moreis a variation of"kaif" symbol of kinship and power. This fantastic weaving was collected by a nurse in 1946 sent to Bikini to help with the evacuation of the native population. Between 1946 and 1958. The US denotated 23 nuclear bombs on Bikini making it a contaminated wasteland. This weaving measures 12 inches in diameter and was probably a fan woven by the natives.

African tribal Hemba carved wood ancestor statue, sculpture, ethnographic art 03
This is an amazing representation of a Hemba ancestor. The carving is exquisite the patina remarkable and the condition very good. Statues of this type date back to the early 20th century. She stands 8" tall by 2.5" wide. This is one of very few objects considered to be from the"Bula" school. After a village in south eastern Zaire near the confluence of the Luvua and Lukuga rivers where several objects of this style have been collected. There are several chips on the cup like object on her head and on the base otherwise she is in excellent condition. Remains of medicine or offerings to the ancestor can still be seen in the cup shaped opening on the top of her head.

Hand-carved wood chair made in traditional slotted style. The seat portion slots into the carved back portion. The back depicts two charming village scenes. The top portion depicts a man and woman dancing around a fire while the lower portion shows women grinding grain in traditional fashion. The chair was purchased directly from Angolan carver Valentin. Who is from Dundo, Angola, the traditional home of these chairs. A bill of sale hand written and signed by him accompanies the chair. There is a crack in the upper portion, the results od the wood drying over the past forty years.

Here is a sweet carved Ethnographic wooden mask. We think its from Africa. Although it is possible that it is from a primitive island or culture in Asia, possibly even Hawaiian or from the Philippines. Measures 9 inches in length, and about 4 inches at the widest part of the head, which tapers, and narrows towards the chin. Nicely carved out, with openings for the eyes and mouth, it also has a sweet signature on the inside of the back, which reads: To Linda, Love Gilton.
