These rare and facinating reliquary figures are always in male/female pairs. This is the male; I am selling the female of the pair concurrently on eBay- ... moreplease check my other items. The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale on eBay.

The Kota revere the relics of ancestors. Ancestor worship formed the core of the family group’s religious and social life. At the death of a chief. The ... moreinitiates would take from the body of the deceased various relics, which were then decorated with metal and rubbed with powders of multiple magical powers. The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. On baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure. The bones formed a stable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Thanks to the diversity of the groups, scattered over a vast area, a great variety of different styles of figures has developed, some of them endogenous and some influenced by neighboring styles. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Reduced to shoulders and“arms, in emptied lozenge shape, surmounted by a large face framed by an ample coiffure with hanging tresses. The face, always oval, may be concave(female) convex(male) or concave-convex, with a forehead in quarter-sphere(also male) The reliquaries were kept outside the homes, in huts at the edge of the village. Only the initiates of the lineage had access to this sacred place. At the time of initiation in the reliquary cult, the clans would meet to perform communal rituals; each clan’s chief would dance holding the reliquary. Some reliquaries featured a large figure representing the lineage founder along with some smaller figures representing his successors. There are figures with two identical or different faces made on two opposite sides of the flat head. Secured on a wooden base. Measurements: 22" in height by 10 1/2" at width.

DOMESTIC SHIPPING IS INCLUDED IN THE SALE PRICE. I WILL COMBINE ITEMS AND ALSO REFUND ANY EXCESS SHIPPING FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL BUYERS. Akan goldweights were used as a measuring system by the Akan people of West Africa. Particularly for weighing gold dust which was currency until replaced by paper money and coins. They are referred to locally as mrammou and the weights are made of brass and not gold. Used to weigh gold and merchandise. At first glance the goldweights look like miniature models of everyday objects. Based on ... morethe Islamic ounce. Each weight had a known measurement. This provided merchants with secure and fair-trade arrangements with one another. The status of a man increased significantly if he owned a complete set of weights. Complete small sets of weights were gifts to newly wedded men. This insured that he would be able to enter the merchant trade respectably and successfully. Beyond their practical application, the weights are miniature representations of West African culture items such as adinkra symbols. Plants, animals and people. Meanings behind the weights Scholars use the weights. And the oral traditions behind the weights, to understand aspects of Akan culture that otherwise may have been lost. The weights represent stories. Riddles, and code of conducts that helped guide Akan peoples in the ways they live their lives. Central to Akan culture is the concern for equality and justice; it is rich in oral histories on this subject. Many weights symbolize significant and well-known stories. The weights were part of the Akan’s cultural reinforcement, expressing personal behavior codes, beliefs, and values in a medium that was assembled by many people. From Wikipedia. The free
African tribal Baule carved wood spoon, home decor, sculpture, ethnographic art
This spoon is a lovely example of Baule carving which they are so well known for. The age is thought to be 30 to 50 years. The face appears to be that of a female ancestor. It is tradition that one elder woman of the tribe holds such a spoon which denotes her as an excellent hostess. Cook, role model and one who excels at all of her duties as a woman. In her later years she picks her successor and passes the spoon on to the young woman who is most deserving. This is truly an amazing piece. Showing the importance of this position through the beauty of the spoon. No damage but there is an indentation on the back of her neck that appears to be a natural occurrence. Please take note of this in the photos. The spoon measures 15" long and 5" wide. Museum quality, very impressive!

By the 19th century bronze objects were used to purchase food and palm wine. To compensate diviners. To satisfy court claims, to contract for a wife and to be buried with. The form, weight, and composition of bronze money clearly mattered to participants in any transaction. The sheer value verifies their ... morewide spread use. EXC! RARE! GOLDEN ETHNOGRAPHIC NAVAJO WATER/TUS BASKET 1920-30s 9"x10" NR
We offer here an old ethnographic Navajo water/ tus basket with remnants of its leather/ horsehair carrying straps still attached. Circa 1910-30s. It is in excellent condition(except for the strap) with a radiant golden patina. The only defects are 2 small areas near each other missing about 3 stitches in each area(shown up close in a photo) Remaining horsehair that connected the strap to the basket can be seen in the area where the strap is missing, with hair still sticking out between the basket's stitches, shown in photos. The remnant of the leather strap is also shown, still attached on the other side of the basket. Size is a large 9" hi x 10" diameter. This is a solid, thick, tightly woven basket, still usable. Identity of weaver unknown. This is an ethnographic basket woven for use, not for sale. It would have been used ... moreto carry water(I believe) This shape of a Navajo basket is often called a"tus" but a"tus" is covered with pine pitch for waterproofing. This one was never covered with pitch, hence the smooth glowing exterior. It has obviously been used. It may have been lined inside with pitch. Some inside coating remains: looks like old mud caked against the insides, so hard to say if it was lined with pitch inside or mud settled out of the water over years of use. It is so tightly woven that it may have been able to hold water without being coated with pitch. This rare basket will be a significant and important addition to anyone's basket collection. No ex-USA sales. Please contact us within 3 days of auction's close. Pay w Paypal. African tribal Tuareg large leather camel bag ethnographic art collectible decor
Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid 20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Tuareg history begins in northern Africa. Many groups have slowly moved southward over the last 2.000 years following the promise of a more prosperous land in the south. Although most Tuareg now practice some degree of Islam they are not considered Arabic. Much Tuareg art is in the form of jewelry, leather and metal saddle decorations and finely crafted swords. They are located in Niger, Nigeria, Burkino Faso, Senegal and Mali. Please note the fine embroidery work on this bag. This work is done by the women of the tribe. This bag is rich in color. Very supple, has a large carrying compartment ... moreand is in excellent condition. The measurements are 28" long by 20" wide not including the strap.

Montol figure / figurine great old African ethnographic art
Nice old vintage Montol figurine. Upside down it looks like a slingshot. It is in very nice shape and stands about 8 inches tall. There are some splits in the wood but the figure is all intact. Look carefully at the pictures to determine condition and age. I am not an expert in this field. I am pricing the piece at about 1/2 what others have been listed for so someone will get a good deal. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding.
