Up for offer is a 19th/early 20th Century Tongan(from Tonga. Formally the Friendly Islands) north-east of New Zealand war(god? club. Intricately carved ... morewith geometric motifs. Just over 43"H. Quite heavy, perhaps made from iron wood, possibly"toa" Not sure if stone chisels were used, along with a shark-tooth tied to a wooden handle OR if iron tools were utilized for the carving. But the carving is rather intricate. I also don't know the exact name of the specific style of club this is as I know there's a heirarcy of designs and status. Good or bad, there's a"better/good" side and a not-so-nice side to the club which may involve some creative restoration altho the"good" side is certainly fine for display. There's also a drip of white paint- as seen in the photos- but I'm not going to dare to clean off. I will leave that to an expert to do. I took photos in different light conditions to try to show the fine carving as well as the'issues' I mentioned. Shipping to the US/Canada will range between $30-60+/ depending on final destination BUT I won't know for sure until end of auction. I only charge exact shipping cost! Low reserve. In the least this is a beautiful display item but I don't profess it to be museum quality BUT it does seem to be an older example for sure. I really have no idea how much this will cost to ship outside of North America. ALSO keep in mind some countries do not allow items of a certain length to be shipped so if you have any shipping questions, please get in touch sooner than later. On Apr-06-13 at 13:21:50 PDT. Seller added the following information: SHIPPING! I looked into international AIR MAIL shipping options and found a few examples. To the winning bidder- please wait for me to create an invoice as I'm only charging exact shipping cost. To the nearest $5 seeing I confirmed shipping costs today. Lovely pair of antique war/ fighting clubs. One plainly african and with serious age as shown by its shape. Quality and stunning glossy patina. Its a ... morepleasure to swing and handle. The other is not as old, but im told it is from the pacific islands? This is a brutal club and is almost honed to a sharp edge, i shudder at the thought of what a hit from this club would do to someone. Again this is definately a fighting club and a nice example. Both are used. Original examples and show the typical wear and tear associated with being used as a blunt weapon. The african has some splitting to its head, the paddle shaped club is mint other than some impact damage to one part of the edge. Neither are recent'tourist' copys. The African one i would take to be late 1800's, the pacific one maybe ww2 era. Paypal only please. Payment required asap at auction end. Make sure you are happy with what you are bidding on before you bid. As due to the nature of these items i dont accept refunds.

African tribal Bwa Plank Nwantantay mask, ethnographic art, decor Burkina Faso
This mask was made by a member of the Bwa tribe in Burkina Faso. The are scattered across Mali. Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire numbering somewhere in the region of 300,000 people. Each Bwa village is governed independently by male elders devoid of a central political authority. Bwa masks represent or embody bush spirits. Who are invoked to benefit mankind and the natural forces on which life depends. Bwa masks tend to be two dimensional and don't extend to the back of the head. Wood masks are more of a southern Bwa tradition, with the northern Bwa using leaf masks associated with the Do society. Wooden masks are very family orientated, danced in various ceremonies from harvest celebrations to funerals. Plank masks such as this represent flying spirits from the bush. Bwa masks are believed to possess special powers which are controlled ... moreby those who wear the masks. The religion associated with Bwa wooden plank masks is focused on the spirit Lanie whose power is manifested through the wooden mask. Bwa people are predominantly farmers. They speak Buamu primarily but some speak Jula and French. The Bwa refer to God as Difini or Dolwemo. Most Bwa still retain traditional animist beliefs. Approx. 5% are Muslim and 10% Christians. Checkerboard patterns such as this mask has represent the separation between good and evil. Wise from stupid, male from female. Measurements are 31"x9.5"

Fiji tribal bark cloth painting or Tapa, ethnographic art, home decor
Archaeologists discovered a painted pattern of black. White and red among the ruins of an 11,000 year old house in northern Syria making it the oldest wall painting ever discovered. There was obviously a spiritual purpose in having more current paintings that resembled the first found. The house in Syria was likely lived in by Hunter-Gathers. Their paintings were geometric in design and showed a striking use of color. The Masi of Fiji are known for their exquisite textile work. The men soak the bark in water then beat it against a smooth tree trunk to expand it and make it softer. Once the bark is dry the women apply patterns using dye from plants. This painting measures 50"X36.5" No tares or holes! A truly beautiful example of this ancient art form. Very collectible and suited for the connoisseur.

African tribal Dan passport mask Cote d'Ivoire ethnographic art, home decor 15
The Dan tribe of the Ivory Coast called the miniature masks passport masks because of their size and variety of uses. They are masks of initiated adult men that would be carried with them or kept on personal shrines in their home. They mark the passage as an initiate into the men's secret society and his attaining a higher rank. At the suggestion of diviners small masks would be given to children to wear to ward off evil or cure illness. Men carried small“passport” masks in leather pouches when they traveled as a form of identification. This mask is thought to be around 50 years old and measures 5” X 2+”

African Wood Carving Female Bust Sculpture Mid-C. Fulani Himba Ethnographic Nude
An original wood carving from Africa. Unsigned. Pre-1970. Offered here is a stylistic rendition of a young woman of the Fulani people of West Africa. Beautifully carved stylistic coiffure and jewelry. Three-dimensional realistic proportions. Rough scrape marks of the sculpting tools form the cornrows. Crest, and chignons of the hair, eyes, neck jewelry and the simulated paint decorations on the cheeks of the face. In contrast, the shoulders, breasts, earrings and face are smooth and flesh like. The most obvious identifier of the tribe represented here is the elaborate hair style. Traditionally, the hair is colored with red clay, resulting in a monochromatic reddish brown look, as this sculpture closely portrays. The Fulani live across a vast area in west central Africa. With the largest concentrations of their 6 million population in Nigeria, ... moreSenegal, and Guinea. They are also known as Fulbe or Peuls. Some tribes are nomadic and pastoral, caring for herds of cattle, and some tribes live permanently in villages and cities. The major religion is Islam, and the women in the permanent settlements wear traditional veils. The nomadic women, in contrast, enjoy a greater degree of expression: dressing their hair in red mud and spending hours or days producing elaborate crests, chignons, braids, cascades, curls, and vertical cornrows. Jewelry is added to adorn the hair. Ref: Hair in African Art and Culture, Sieber& Herreman. The Museum for African Art. See photo. Book not included in sale. This item has been safe in storage since at least the 1970s. It is solid wood of a reddish brown hue. Nicely buffed, with a couple of small natural cracks on the base and minor removable scuff marks(can be seen in photos, such as on the left arm) It will make a divine addition to your collection of fine African art. Weight: 7.5 lbs(14.5 kilos) Height approx 18 inches(55 cm) base is 5" x 3" 12.7 cm x 7.6 cm) Vintage items are sold"as is. Condition very good. African tribal currency Bamana iron oil lamp or candle holder ethnographic art
This is a multi-armed lamp with a cup to hold oil at the front. Oil known as tulu. Made from the Karite tree nut was burned in the cups to produce a dark, smoky light that was as much a light for ritual purposes as for illumination. Lamps such as this would serve in the house but also would provide light, real and ritual, for masks when they danced at night. The small forged bird at the top is praising God with either a Muslem position of prayer or a traditionalist animist's gesture of prayer. The arms of the lamp repeat this gesture. Small spoons hanging by chains were used to adjust the wick, made of twisted cotton burning in the Karite oil. This lamp with it's standardized forms is an example of the change of style in Bamana lamps as other forms of iron material became available and in this instance the arms and support of the ... morelamp is riveted together rather than fully forged. Yet it must be noted that the figure has been forged and hammered to an abstract figure in the profile. It measures 12" in height and 5" in width.

African tribal Akua Ma Ashanti fertility statue, ethnographic art, home decor
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Small disc-headed wood figures on a cylindrical torso. With or without arms are among the best-known images from all of Africa. Most have thin flat heads, suggesting that their sculptures carried to an extreme the sloping forehead convention evident in the terracotta heads by the same people. Barren, and mocked for carrying a surrogate baby made of wood, Akua is said to have gotten pregnant nevertheless, eventually giving birth to a healthy baby girl. Female children are preferred among the Matrilineal Akan, and Akua Ma are almost almost always carved as female. African tribal Tuareg large leather water bag ethnographic art, ethnic decor
Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid 20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Tuareg history begins in northern Africa.
