A nineteenth century stone-carved throwing club. It is, I believe, Australian Aboriginal. Though the shape of the head doesn't conform to any Australian ... moreforms, or to any other Oceanic clubs I've found, the wood is a very dense closed-pore hardwood similar to that found in identified Aboriginal clubs and boomerangs I've encountered. The shaft is roundish, , but out of round due to age expansion and contraction. Much of the marks left by the stone carving process remain. The head is intentionally and robustly out of round, elliptical, most near in form to an oval. There are no condition issues.

Up for offer is a 19th/early 20th Century Tongan(from Tonga. Formally the Friendly Islands) north-east of New Zealand war(god? club. Intricately carved ... morewith geometric motifs. Just over 43"H. Quite heavy, perhaps made from iron wood, possibly"toa" Not sure if stone chisels were used, along with a shark-tooth tied to a wooden handle OR if iron tools were utilized for the carving. But the carving is rather intricate. I also don't know the exact name of the specific style of club this is as I know there's a heirarcy of designs and status. Good or bad, there's a"better/good" side and a not-so-nice side to the club which may involve some creative restoration altho the"good" side is certainly fine for display. There's also a drip of white paint- as seen in the photos- but I'm not going to dare to clean off. I will leave that to an expert to do. I took photos in different light conditions to try to show the fine carving as well as the'issues' I mentioned. Shipping to the US/Canada will range between $30-60+/ depending on final destination BUT I won't know for sure until end of auction. I only charge exact shipping cost! Low reserve. In the least this is a beautiful display item but I don't profess it to be museum quality BUT it does seem to be an older example for sure. Cerre Perdue(last wax) casting was a later development than to open mold of sand casting. Many of lost wax showed Persian or Coptic influence. By the 19th century bracelets were used to purchase food and palm wine. To compensate diviners, to satisfy court claims, to contract for a wife and to be buried with. The form, weight, and composition of bracelet money clearly mattered to participants in any transaction. The sheer value verifies their wide spread use. A long-long lived monetary function of bracelets was their use for wealth storage and display. The early Benin use of bracelets. Particularly lost wax, extended across Sudan, Cameroon, Mossi, Asante, Ife, Benin, Nupe Niger Benne, and the Bamenda Grasslands, the Dan and Kpelle of Liberia, the Biafadas of Guine-Bbessan, the Senufo, Bambare, Baule, Babo, Libi, Ibo, Tic, and Hausa. The simpler ... morebut more laborious process of drawing wire was used in Central Africa. This technique was refined in particular by the Kamba. Chagga, and Kekuyu of Kenya, the Longo, the Hutu of Barundi, the Bemba, the Nyamwezi, and Yeke, the Lembe, and Tremovaaland the Zulu. Casting was probably the primary method used in west Africa through Sudan. This Hausa bracelet measures 4" wide. One of many fine examples of the art of bracelet making in Africa!

African tribal Ethiopian carved headrest sculpture ethnographic art, decor 002
Ethiopian headrests are often times intricately carved and other times they are very simple yet profound in their shape and elegance. This particular headrest has a very primitive charm. Serving as a pillow that is cool and comfortable in their tropical climate. And protecting their hairstyles by raising the head above the bed. Headrests are items of great personal attachment and were also seen as the seat of dreams. Dreams are seen as prophetic, foretelling important events, providing warnings and communicating messages from the other world. This lovely and well used headrest measures 7" wide and 6.5" tall. Very minor cracks and chips which are to be expected with an item of this age and amount of use. If you smell this headrest you will smell the remains of that wonderful odor of the fire that was burning while the owner was sleeping ... moreor resting near by. What a wonderful aroma evoking images of tribal life! The measurements are 6.5" tall and 5.5" across the top and 4.5" across the bottom. It's a bit asymmetrical which adds to its charm.

African tribal currency jewelry ethnographic art collectible, Fulani W. Africa %
The glass beads in this Fulani necklace were most likely made in Bohemia and traded to the Fulani in the 1800's or early 1900's. The Fulani were one of the dominating cultures of all of West Africa but colonization put an end to their empire. Resulting in the scattered nature of the Fulani today. They value colorful beaded jewelry and body ornamentation above most African people. Since they are nomadic, the Fulani produce a very limited range of art objects and purchase or trade for materials for subsequent use. This necklace measures 18" in length. There are 5 different colors of beads in this necklace including the red ones.

African tribal Tuareg small leather purse bag ethnographic art fashion ethnic
Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid 20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Tuareg history begins in northern Africa. Many groups have slowly moved southward over the last 2.000 years following the promise of a more prosperous land in the south. Although most Tuareg now practice some degree of Islam they are not considered Arabic. Much Tuareg art is in the form of jewelry, leather and metal saddle decorations and finely crafted swords. They are located in Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Mali. Please note the fine embroidery work on this bag. This work is done by the women of the tribe. This bag is rich in color. Very supple and in very good condition. ... moreIt opens from the bottom exposing a compartment for valuables that slides in and out but is tight fitting so as not to easily come open but also keep the contents extremely safe. It measures 16" long with the fringe but not counting the over the shoulder cord. Very precious!

African Tribal Currency Bracelet/Anklet Ethnographic Art, Bronze Jewelry AWESOM!
This amazing piece of ART or jewelery once had it's home with the Baule People of Cote d' Ivorie where it was made. An extraordinary bracelet or anklet made from bronze using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin alloy is thought to be from the 19th century conservatively. The condition is exceptional. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the t ime of it's acquisition in the 1940's. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The minute intricate detail of this piece is most remarkable! Three scorpions adorn it as well as the head of some marvelous character which extends out from the piece itself. It's nose or mouth as well as what appear to be ears hold bars of metal that imply more wealth! Scalloped and detailed half circles line both sides ... moreand appear on the body of the piece along with two whole detailed circles at the neck of the mysterious creatures elongated triangular head which may represent eyes. This design element is typical for Baule jewelry This is certainly worthy of being noted as a collectors piece. The weight is.9 lbs. The measurements are 4" across and 1.5" in height or width. There are 12 photos. To see them all click on the blue arrow at the end of the row of small photos. All photos can be enlarged by clicking on the photo you want a better look at then mousing around on that photo
African tribal Yoruba currency bracelet, ethnographic art, jewelry, fashion N2
This type of copper or bronze alloy bracelet and currency were first cast in an elongated form and then beaten into the bracelet shape. After being cast in the lost wax technique designs were worked onto the surface with a steel chisel. The main function of these bracelets was decoration however they retained value by the nature of the material they were made of as copper alloy could be recast into other forms. They thus were valued as currency as well as decoration. This bracelet is thought to be well over 70 years old. It measures 2 3/4" across and from side to side. The wist opening is 1 1/4"

Ethnographic Survey Ancient World 1861 antique map original outline hand color Ethnographische Ubersicht der Alten Welt Issued 1861. Weimar, Germany by Geographisches Institut Fine original antique map. Printed in the 19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. With original hand color. In Good+ or better condition. Light minor age wear, some small minor light staining as seen, overall very presentable and attractive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting antique map which will look nice when displayed. Sheet measures c. 9 3/8" H x 11 7/8" W. Printed area measures c. 7 3/4" H x 10 1/8" W. 28725] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins ... moremay be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. African tribal currency Bamana iron lamp, outdoors, decor, ethnographic art,Mali
This is a multi-armed lamp with cups to hold oil at the end of the arms. Oil known as tulu. Made from the Karite tree nut was burned in the cups to produce a dark, smoky light that was as much a light for ritual purposes as for illumination. Lamps such as this would serve in the house but also would provide light, real and ritual, for masks when they danced at night. The small forged bird at the top is praising God with either a Muslem position of prayer or a traditionalist animist's gesture of prayer. The arms of the lamp repeat this gesture. Small spoons hanging by chains were used to adjust the wick, made of twisted cotton burning in the Karite oil. This lamp with it's standardized forms is an example of the change of style in Bamana lamps as other forms of iron material became available and in this instance the arms and support ... moreof the lamp is riveted together rather than fully forged. Yet it must be noted that the figure has been forged and hammered to an abstract figure in the profile. It measures 32" in length and 15" in width. It is thought to come from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Early Mexico ethnographic photographs Rubber factory Guayule 32 Images Lot
This is a rare. Wonderful, and tremendously interesting lot of 32 photographs dating(estimate from the 1880s– 1890s) They are all oversized cabinet cards 5.75 x 8.75 on heavy stock. My crack research team has made some interesting observations regarding these images, however, as a lot, they stand up to being a superb group of ethnographic images. Although many are low contrast, the subject matter is excellent. Two of the images are of American’s, the one of the two gents is by a Youngstown photographer thus we found National rubber had some records of Guayule rubber development. The balance(30) are all of Mexicans or the rubber plant. Most of the images have some period notations on the reverse. We believe these are all related to the attempt to produce rubber from the Guayule plant near the Tiburcio Ranch in Vanegas, Coahuila Mexico. Further, ... morewe think they might be related to the National Rubber company’s attempt to produce rubber from that region. We will gladly correct our listing if you care to provide feedback. African tribal Hemba carved wood ancestor statue sculpture ethnographic art w09
This is an amazing representation of a Hemba ancestor. The carving is exquisite. The patina remarkable and the condition excellent showing only one spot on the very bottom with a section missing that might have happened in the carving process and is a natural feature of this particular piece of wood. You will notice this spot in the photos. Statues of this style date back to the early 20th century. She is 9.5" tall by 4" wide. This is one of very few objects considered to be from the"Bula" school, after a village in south eastern Zaire near the confluence of the Luvua and Lukuga rivers where several objects of this style have been collected. A very traditional carved statue.
