Old insect damage arrested, cracks in head, in torso, in carved skirt and in base, worn patina, chips in places, Additional Information: A well used carving from the Igbo people that belongs to the category of Ikenga shrine pieces. As it is shown on this example. Most Ikenga are generally sculpted as a male anthropomorphic figure with rams horns rising vertically from the head and holding staff or knife in hands. An Ikenga is a personal shrine dedicated to the individualâs courage and physical strength. It comes from the Igbo of Nigeria who are the largest tribal grouping along the lower Niger River and the Niger Delta Region. Igbo art is diverse in its many forms. Materials, and use, and is broken into a number of sub-styles based upon history and the local physical environment. Much of their art is open to public view where the Igbo are reminded of their ancestors and of the various spirits of the Igbo pantheon of gods. Kept in personal shrines, Ikenga honor the success of an individual in business or battle or will honor their social standing. They incorporate a personâs spirit, his abilities, his familyâs prestige as well as his ancestors. Offerings are made of chalk and cola nut. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Damage/Repair, general wear, Additional Information: This is an example a Kuba Bushoong Moshambwooy mask. Variants of such a mask are also found among thr the Ngoongo. Sub-group of Kuba people, where they are known as Mukyeem or mukenga mask. For a long time people used to call this type of masks moshambwooy. But there is a substantial difference between these two masks. Examples of Royal Moshambwooy mu Shall are very rare to find. Most of the s o-called Moshambwooy housed by public or private collections are of Ngongo workmanship type named Mukyeem mask. They all are helmet masks and decorated with a lot of cowrie shells and beads. On Mukyeem mask. The headdress is extended by a long, central, trunk-like appendage(sometimes with two offshoots) suggesting the elephant's tusk. Attached to the end of the trunk is raffia fibers, which can be replaced by a bright red, tuft of parrot feathers. Moshambwooy is usually topped with a high structure decorated with feathers. There is no elephant tusk-like on moshambwooy(see examples on Face of Spirits) The greatest of the three"most significant" masks of the BaKuba. The Chi-Wara(female antelope represents the earth) and Tji Wara(male antelope represents the sun) are each worn as a headdress on top of the male dancers head's in conjunction with a fibre costume and are danced in pairs twice a year, for the planting of the crops, and again after the harvest. To the Bamana People the antelope represents the mythical character who was half antelope& half human who they believed taught them how to cultivate the land. This fine Chi-Wara specimen measures 44 inches long and 9 inches wide. This Bamana Chi-Wara is in great antique tribally used condition with some tribal repairs. This old traditional piece of Bamana African art would be a perfect addition to any African collection and also is an amazing display piece. The Physikalischer Atlas created a new genre of thematic atlases. This work represents the culmination of all the innovations in the different ways that people had looked at the geographic landscape of the world. And the evolving techniques that had developed to display those views, since the time of Francis Bacon. The first edition was issued gradually in eighteen installments over a dozen years(1837–1848) This plate is from the enlarged second edition. African tribal Teke HUGE brass currency necklace, ethnographic art, wt. 4.9lbs
This type of copper or bronze alloy jewelry and currency were first cast in an elongated form and then beaten into the desired shape. After being cast in the lost wax technique designs were worked onto the surface with a steel chisel. The main function of these items was decoration however they retained value by the nature of the material they were made of as copper alloy could be recast into other forms. They thus were valued as currency as well as decoration. This neck ring is thought to possibly be well over 200 years old. It measures 9.5" across and a weight of 4lb.s 9oz.s. Teke brass alloy necklaces are very rare. This heavy necklace was worn by the chief of the land in special ceremonies. As a prestige object and jewelry which was an indicator of status. He published 30 catalogues detailing his collection and staged a number of exhibitions of ethnographic material at Earl's Court. In 1899 he traveled throughout Britain purchasing material from British soldiers returning from the 1897 Benin punitive Expedition amassing a large quantity of material that was carefully recorded in his catalogues. This Benin material is reproduced starting from the catalogue volume 18 where bronze heads are listed as masks priced at between 25 and 35 GBP and plaques at 15 GBP. Catalogue 21 is entirely devoted to the art from Benin. In Volume 22. It is possible to find Fang Byeri for 1.15 pounds each. Good old days… On the oceanic art front it is a Papuan gulf feast with gope boards. Bull roarers, belts, drums, clubs, fish hooks, an extraordinary wealth.

vintage 1900'S handcarved african tribes man belonged to my cousin who was in the congo from the late 1920's for sabena airlines untill 1939 not sure on the exact age( i got this from him in the 1960's) its 52 inches tall.base is 9 inch 1/2 x 6 inch 1/2. top with is 14 inch. weight of the carving alone is 24 lbs. has a nice patina and has been maintained with natural beeswax.the wood has some different colors(probably due to the size) and a hairline crack see pictures and feel free to ask question before bidding. Lot 3 Antique Ethnographic Oceanic Tribal Art Ancestor Carvings Asmat LOOK!
THIS IS THE LAST TIME THIS WILL BE UP FOR AUCTION FOR A WHILE. IF YOU HAVE A REASONABLE OFFER MESSAGE ME. Up for auction is your opportunity to own three unique tribal art pieces all in one lot. Two of the pieces are authentic mid-1900s Asmat wood carvings. The other an antique wood post sculpture from Indonesia. I inherited all of these pieces from my father earlier this year. He was fortunate enough to travel the globe building golf courses as a profession. During one of his trips to the Pacific Islands years ago he returned with these. Piece 1: Asmat Male Carved Wooden Sculpture c. Mid 1900s This is one of the most beautiful and unique Asmat carvings I have ever seen. This sculpture depicts a male figure on his knees with his hands in his mouth. Looking frightened. The man is quite detailed with his hair, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, arms, ... morefingers, feet, toes, chest, and genetalia all being carved. There are also numerous Asmat tribal markings located throughout the figure. This is a very fine, high value piece. Dimensions are approximately 24x4x3. Years ago this piece was dropped and the left leg of the figure broke off. It was repaired at one time by a family member with a general all-purpose glue. I have provided photos to the best of my ability. Piece 2: Asmat Carved Wood Serving Tray with Head Carved Handle c. Mid 1900s This piece is an authentic carved Asmat serving tray. The piece is a very fine example of a typical Asmat carving. The patterns depicted on the back and sides of the tray are very traditional of Asmat pieces. With the exception being the fine quality of these carvings. The carved head handle has detailed carvings of the eyes, ears, nose and mouth. High value/museum quality piece. Dimensions are approximately 21x6x2. This piece has a slight slice of the nose missing and a chunk of one of the sides taken out near the place of one of the markings. Both are old blemishes that may have been done during the carving of the piece. I have included photos to the best of my ability. Piece 3:

Super Long Handmade African Kuba Cloth; Tribal, Ethnographic
The piece shown is so long that it is doubled over for display. My sister sent me several Kuba clothpieces when she lived in The Democratic Republic of Congo. This special tribalcloth is made from woven palm raffia. Dyed raffia is appliqued over a plainlayer in geometric patterns. When she lived in the Congo she tookadvantage of the opportunity to begin building her Kuba cloth collection–visiting the Congolese vendors in town. This fabric cannot ever be washed. They smell of freshly cut grass and thedesign has some slight irregularities which add to their beauty. Please note that there are some spots that appear to be worn- but the artisan continued to place applique over these spots. Also, one small piece was not hemmed- as noted in the picture. This piece measures approximately 81”long by 25” wide.

Hand-Carved Ethnographic African Tree Of Life Sculpture Vintage 1950's/60's 4Kg
This is a very heavy unique hand carved antique 19th century African wooden Tree of Life sculpture It is very high quality and carved from extremely heavy ebony/ironwood. It is done with an abundance of very intricately carved detailing depicting many intertwined figures on all angles and sides and I believe to be a very rare carving. This piece is extremely dimensional and in great shape with a wonderful patina from age. This was my grandfathers; he bought it in Africa in the late 50’s early 60’s. My father remembers it getting knocked over when he was young. So that must of been over 40 years ago and it was professionally repaired. I cannot see any visual damage myself but sadly I am going to have to advertise this as damaged/possible parts missing. This wonderfully tight. Woven cap is sound in its basketry. There are some places where I see some orange, rust colored places on top of the fibers. It is not noticed except on close inspection, as there are several multi-colored dots throughout the pattern: pink, light blue, orange, yellow and red. Made of somewhat course, heavy gauge thread, the cap is round and flat on top while naturally made to have an edge that when turned over could serve as a bowl/holder. Canela Indian basket from Brazil--ethnographic art
This basket was purchased some 25 years ago at an ethnic art auction here in Chicago and is apparently from an ethnographic collection. On one side the attached label says"Basket#46 Tribe-Canela Area-Rio Mearim" The other side of the label shown in the last picture says"Collected by Dr. Milton Heifetz in Brazil" and the label does show some age. It is a very well done. Very tightly woven basket in almost perfect shape except the left handle has become detached. But as the second picture shows the handle is still part of the basket attached to the right hand handle by a cord. A person could easily reattach the left handle. Measured on the bottom shown on the third picture the basket measures 6 1/2 inches at its widest and 4 inches in the other direction. The basket is about 5 inches tall. As previously stated it is beautifully ... morewoven and a nice example of native basketry. I don't know if the flap shown in the first picture is just a decorative feature or served some function. A nice piece of ethnographic craft art.

VERY RARE KYRYZ / UZBEK BAG FACE CHAVADAN STUNNING ETHNOGRAPHIC PIECE
Kyrgyz pile weavings have always been in short supply and older pieces shorter still. Here is an example that may date from the late 19th century. Palette is similar to a carpet(gilam) dated by Antipina/Beresneva as 1870 and shares many similarities with some chavadan examples from late 19th/early 20th century in the same reference material. The relatively clear field. Limited use of colors, main design elements, and cotton accents could be indicative of a 19th century attribution. I have handled a number of similar pieces and while the condition and bold colors of this piece makes it appear to be from the first or early second quarter of the 20th century, it"feels" older than almost all of the pieces I have come across. There really is a dearth of literature on this weavings Wool is handspun and quite plush. Cotton is used sparingly ... morewithin the top/bottom border stripes and appears to have been used as the warp center of the overcast edges. The outline of the blue center design with brown wool is a very appealing feature. This is a truly rare and unusual piece of a disappearing ethnographic art. This carved stool comes from the Senufo people of Cote d'Ivoire. Nearly a million and a half people who live in northern Cote d'Ivoire. Mali, and Burkina Faso are known collectively as Senufo. The multiculturalism of a Senufo community is reflected in the varied forms and styles of Senufo art. Stools similar to this one are common among the Senufo. They come in a variety of sizes but are all have the same minimal graceful design. The carrying handle on this stool represents an animal, possibly a horse.
