This auction is for an authentic antique figural African Art bronze statue from the Dogon Tribe in Mali. The bronze is of a tribesman carrying what I ... morebelieve is a snake in his right hand. The man appears to be an elder. As he has a long beard. The bronze has absolutely amazing patina and has started to green in places. This piece was found in an estate auction in which the man had hundreds of pieces of African art, all museum quality! This bronze also includes a specially made stand which fits around the man's abdomen and his feet rest on a 1 inch black painted wood block for 360 degree viewing! The bronze(without the stand) is approximately 8 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The stand adds about 1 inch to the total height. The Dogon Tribe: The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of the country of Mali. In the West of the Continent of Africa, south of the Niger bend. The population numbers between 400.000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions. Their mask dances, wooden sculpture(making the bronze more rare! and their architecture. Dogon art is primarily sculpture. Dogon art revolves around religious values. Ideals, and freedoms. Dogon sculptures are not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of families, sanctuaries, or kept with the Hogon. The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. Themes found throughout Dogon sculpture consist of figures with raised arms. Superimposed bearded figures. Horsemen, stools with caryatids, women with children, figures covering their faces, women grinding pearl millet, women bearing vessels on their heads, donkeys bearing cups, musicians, dogs, quadruped-shaped troughs or benches, figures bending from the waist, mirror-images, aproned figures. And standing figures. Signs of other contacts and origins are evident in Dogon art. The Dogon people were not the first inhabitants of the cliffs of Bandiaga

Title, Dogon Kneeling Female Figure with Raised Arm Nommo. Mali African Type of Object, Carving. Figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, ... moreWood. Encrusted materials, Approximate Age, Mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 12.75 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, wear and chips in places, Additional Information: A kneeling female figure with one raised arm. This figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. Kneeling is a position of supplication for the Dogon people. The figure depicts a male with a carved beard. The surface has encrusted patina and shows signs of extensive use. Beyond the obvious. The exact use of the piece cannot be known for sure. The Dogon use kneeling figures of nebulous sexuality for a variety of purposes, from effigies of their mythological founders, the"nommo, to ancestor figures, and shrine figures to promote success in childbirth or the harvest. The Dogon, numbering about 250,000, are one of most fascinating cultures in the world. They fled from the Mossi into southern Mali during the 15th century, settling on a breathtaking but remote plateau, known as the Bandiagara Cliffs. This isolation allowed their art to remain stylistically very pure, and as a result they have become a laboratory of sorts for ethnologists. They are a warm and hospitable people as well, much to the relief of all the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for the public, there are a limited number of art forms which they reveal, choosing to keep most of their rituals close to their hearts, and away from the cameras. Dogon beliefs and mythology are so complex that it takes a"griot" up to a week to recite them. Recommended Reading: See Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. 70572* All content. Title, Dogon Mother and Child Maternity Figure Mali. Africa, Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Encrustation(organic ... morematerials) Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good Most ofour pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Shallow cracks in places. Chips Additional Information: Dogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well carved figure with her arms wrapped around the ‘child’ sitting on her lap projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the seated mother holding a child are commonly called ‘maternity’ figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure held within the female’s arms is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the ‘mother’ representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among some of the finest art produced in West Africa and the obvious quality of carving is impressive. Recommended Reading: Francine Ndiaye. A wonderful sculpture from Dogon with good age and in stable condition despite the cracks in male figure and in base.pls check pictures for more details.19" ... moreh by 10" w Pieces of this quality are becoming rare. This piece will stand well in any collection for its quality and for what it represents in the Dogon society. The image of the seated male and female couple is a common theme in Dogon Art reflecting their view of the necessary relationship between men and women to insure continuity and life. This gender pairing also demonstrates the importance of the male-female duality so prominent in Dogon creation myths in the pairing of the primordial Nommos. The ancestors from whom they descended. Stable cracks in male's head and body, crack in base, male genitalia cut, after all it is an amzing piece for any collector on a custom black stand.thanks.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bfg2%3E-14b5b7657c9-0x10e-

Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece

Wooden Dogon Granary Door from Mali-Intact Lock w Latch
I am slowly downsizing a large collection of artifacts acquired through many years of travel and a fascination with tribal cultures. Have decided that I can't keep going to auctions( which I love to do) unless I first pass on a few items to someone else! This delightful Dogon door has been recently taken off the wall to make way for a new piece of art. Have owned it since 1974 but cannot determine its exact age. I would conservatively say'mid 20th century' but it could very well be older. Constructed of 3 carved hardwood panels held together by strips of the same wood at the top and bottom and very large staple like flat iron nails. Measures 27" 69 cm. x 19" 48 cm. The latch-a significant feature of Dogon granary doors- is intact. Has a very appealing dark reddish patina. Bears all the stylistic markings of Dogon doors ... morethat some say were traditionally made by fathers to accompany their daughters as they moved from puberty into adulthood. Hence. The female'breasts' represented along the right hand side. Others have told me that they had a less ritualistic function and were simply carved to protect the window like opening into each family's grain storage. Primordial beings, ancestor figures, sun lizards and scenes of daily life symbolically serving to protect the entrance. For example, t he zig zag elements along the vertical sides are said to represent the Dogon serpent ancestor. Whatever their anthropological origins. Dogon granary doors are an excellent example of why traditional African artifacts are as interesting to artists as they are to collectors and students of history. There is an inherent modernism to them that is stylistically appealing. I know, because I had this one on my wall for many years and it generated many, many comments. Please note that this door is not light. Hence the shipping charge of $22.00 which applies to Continental North America only! I will ship worldwide but if bidding from overseas and you are concerned about prohibitive shipping costs please mes

Textiles were also used as a form of identity with each tribe having their own unique patterns which also made it easy to spot outsiders. Many different types of patterns were formed in places that specialized in weaving. Kings would request several types of cloth to show their prestige and importance. Kings would even compare themselves by how many robes they had and what they were made out of. We ship Worldwide from Burkina Faso. International standard shipping by Sonapost. Please. Authentic African Dogon Aduno Koro Celebration Vessel, Mopti, Mali.
Authentic African Dogon Aduno Koro Celebration Vessel. Mopti, Mali. African Dogon"Aduno Koro" Celebration Vessel This is a superb piece of African history. Intricately carved and a stunning piece for any collection. This monumental vessel. Which is 23" long, was kept in the house of a lineage head in a Dogon community. It was used during an annual ritual known as goru to hold the meat of chicken and in larger vessels sheep and goats sacrificed at an altar dedicated to Amma the Creator and the family ancestors. Performed at the time of the winter solstice. The ceremony represents the culmination of rituals that celebrate the all-important millet harvest. Whose abundance will support the family in the coming year. Such works have been described as aduno koro. An"ark of the world" meant to represent the mythic ark sent ... moreby Amma to reorganize and populate the world. The aduno koro displays a wealth of imagery relating to the Dogon account of genesis. Holding the eight original human ancestors and everything they needed for life on earth. The ark was guided by Nommo, the primordial being who created order within the universe. When the ark settled on the ground. Nommo transformed himself into a horse and transported the eight ancestors across the earth to water. Where the ark floated like a boat. In this example. The horse's head is fitted with a bridle, representing Nommo's transformation into equine form. While the eight original ancestors are portrayed in two groups of four on the side of the vessel. The lizardlike creature on the lid and seperating the ancestors represents represents ayo geu. A black crocodile who killed Nommo after he completed his task of guiding the ark. We do ship worldwide. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the i4th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is

These figures are modeled after much older figures found in the caves, where the Dogon buried their dead. The figure may represent an ancestor or equally a Nommo, one of the eight primordial figures created by God. She may have been placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest’s shrine where she would have offerings and sacrifices made upon her to infuse her with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. They share visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A shrine figure such as this would be kept in the lineage elder’s house and used during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. Traces of encrustation are the result of much ritual activity where offerings would be poured over the seated figure. FRENCH BOOK : Locks of Dogon Country (africa, mali, burkina)
Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque dogon yoruba songye senofu lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer.
