Old Dogon Miniature Wood Fetish Sacred Altar Ladder Mali Africa An old Dogon miniature wood sacred altar fetish representing a ladder. This ladder is ... morea miniature representation of the traditional ladder used by the Dogon to access the rooftops of their dwellings or granaries. Aside from the invaluable utility of the ladder to access difficult to reach places. The faithfully replicated miniature version possesses a purely spiritual function. The sacred Dogon miniature ladder was often kept in a room separate from the dwelling; on this altar were placed various types of statues. And more importantly would be found a small clay vessel in which it was believed that the soul of the deceased resided. The miniature wood ladder would lean against the small clay vessel so as to allow the soul of the deceased to climb up to the world beyond upon his passing where he would join his ancestors. Unlike the larger Dogon wood ladders that acquire a patina resulting from exposure to the natural elements and from constant usage. The sacred miniature ladders remain almost intact as they are barely never handled and never see the light of day. NOTE: Please see a similar example in Afrique l'art des formes by Marc Ginzberg, Ed. Skira(2000) p 286 On the other hand. Ritual sacrifices of blood and millet are sometimes made and will cover the ladder in some areas. Title, Dogon Kneeling Female Figure with Raised Arm Nommo. Mali African Type of Object, Carving. Figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, ... moreWood. Encrusted materials, Approximate Age, Mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 12.75 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, wear and chips in places, Additional Information: A kneeling female figure with one raised arm. This figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. Kneeling is a position of supplication for the Dogon people. The figure depicts a male with a carved beard. The surface has encrusted patina and shows signs of extensive use. Beyond the obvious. The exact use of the piece cannot be known for sure. The Dogon use kneeling figures of nebulous sexuality for a variety of purposes, from effigies of their mythological founders, the"nommo, to ancestor figures, and shrine figures to promote success in childbirth or the harvest. The Dogon, numbering about 250,000, are one of most fascinating cultures in the world. They fled from the Mossi into southern Mali during the 15th century, settling on a breathtaking but remote plateau, known as the Bandiagara Cliffs. This isolation allowed their art to remain stylistically very pure, and as a result they have become a laboratory of sorts for ethnologists. They are a warm and hospitable people as well, much to the relief of all the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for the public, there are a limited number of art forms which they reveal, choosing to keep most of their rituals close to their hearts, and away from the cameras. Dogon beliefs and mythology are so complex that it takes a"griot" up to a week to recite them. Recommended Reading: See Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. 70572* All content. The body is covered with traces of encrusted material that can be seen throughout the body. from the Dogon people of Mali. The surface and texture on this well carved sculpture shows sign of long use and good age. This Dogon figure was used as a shrine piece and a representation of a Nommo. One of the mythic ancestors to whom prayers are made to get bessings. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same. They share visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A shrine figure such as this would be kept in the lineage elder’s house and used during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. Traces of encrustation are the result of much ritual activity where offerings would be poured over the seated figure. The well carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and detailing of the beard and the sculpting of the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. 75401* All content. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. Jim's experiences in Africa has shown that

For protection. Until about 300 years ago the Dogon built their villages near or in the famous Bandiagara cliffs. They have thusly been nicknamed the Hill, Cliff and Mountain people. Dogon art manifests in masks, architectural objects, statues and vessels. The Dogon realize that they are not the first inhabitants ... moreof the land that they now occupy. Their myths, legends, traditions and art retain the memories of their predecessors. The Dogon people of Mali are known the world over for their creation of Dogon Doors. The doors have various uses in their society; first as the physical closure to their granaries. Secondly they are created and exchanged as gifts for birthdays. Marriages, tokens of luck and rites of passage bequests. Thirdly, when used as a part of the architecture, as a door or shutter, in a private abode, through the use of symbols they are used to describe the occupation of the person or that persons persona or status in the village. Lastly it served as a sign to taxpayers, letting them know which form of payment was accepted in the adjoining building. The symbolic styling of the doors can vary. AuthenticAfrica.com

Dogon Male Figure Niongom Curve Shape Turned Head African
Type of Object, Carved sculpture, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, 20th Century, Dimensions, Height is 16 inches, Overall Condition, good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, crack in head. Chips, Additional Information: A late example of Dogon standing male figures with curved body and turned head in a style known as Niongom. Found among the Dogon from the Southern Cliff. This figure, representation of ... morea nommo, was used as a shrine piece. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture, for the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This sculpture reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. West of the Dogon heartland the Dogon interact with the other major art producing people of Mali, the Bamana(Bambara) A Bamana blacksmith could easily have carved the figure. such Dogon figures represent ancestors identified to an individual, family, village or region. As an ancestor the figure represents either a familial ancestor or one of the original eight Nommo who descended to earth to create us, the world and continue to be interested in the affairs of man. Carved Wooden Statue of Seated Fertility God-Ghana-Baoule or Dogon Cote d'Ivoire
This is an original vintage carved statue of a what appears to be a fertility God. It was hand-crafted in Ghana and is approximately 23" x 7" x 11" in depth. The imagery on this statue appears to be perhaps a Baoule Fertility God and the rounded beard without other facial hair is reminiscent of some Dogon statues from the Ivory Coast. My notes only indicate this came from Ghana so any other expertise/suggestions available here on EBAY would be gratefully appreciated. Condition is very fine although there is natural wear and tear as this is a tribal artifact with some obvious use. There is a crack along the right side of the statue from the seat of the chair to the man's waist. Also. There is a crack on the face(see close up photo) Other small cracks as well. This item is from a small private collection of primarily African ... moretribal collectibles/art(also includes a few North West/Canadian/Eskimo/Asian pieces/US Art Work-paintings and lithographs) Most of the African material was collected in the 1970s and represents varies tribes from the Cameroon. Zimbabwe, Ghana, Burkino Faso and others.

We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks. Chips, scratches, holes, old insect damage arrested, Additional Information: This well worn figure is significantly valued within the Dogon traditional. The figure is an hermaphrodite ... morefigure that symbolizes the spirit of nommo. The primordial ancestor. It is usually placed in a shrine dedicated to nommos. The nommo are an integral part of Dogon mythology. The god Ammo mated with the earth. And gave birth to a pair of nommos, bisexual beings, some predominantly male, some female. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today fo

 Rare, Antique African Grannery Door/Dogon, Mali/Figures, Breasts/ 10"x5"
Rare. Antique African grannery door from the Dogon in Mali, probably I was told, over 100 years old. Beautiful patina all over and original wear shown on it. Stylized figures on the edges and images of breasts in the center; Small. 5" w x 10" but a great piece! Door was bought from my African dealer friend who just returned from a trip to West Africa(with many more items still to arrive) He told me that he hasn't seen an"original" door of this type in a very long time and said this was a rare find for him. Even though he has"pickers" always on the lookout for good quality pieces. I bought the two he found so check my listings for a larger one as well. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Rare Bronze Cast Alligator Granary Door Lock/Dogon? Bambara?, Mali
Unusual and rare cast bronze Dogon? or Bambara? alligator image door lock. From Mali, used to lock the granary bins/rooms there. This is the only metal lock I have seen, either in books or on the internet, since most are wood. Alligator: 12" L; Old patina and evidence of age on the metal; Two holes drilled in the alligator and two in the back part that may be later additions since I bought the piece from a collection where the lock had been displayed and screwed permanently onto an old wooden door. Antique Authentic Figural/Figure & Snake African Art Bronze Statue-Dogon Tribe
This auction is for an authentic antique figural African Art bronze statue from the Dogon Tribe in Mali. The bronze is of a tribesman carrying what I believe is a snake in his right hand. The man appears to be an elder. As he has a long beard. The bronze has absolutely amazing patina and has started to green in places. This piece was found in an estate auction in which the man had hundreds of pieces of African art, all museum quality! This bronze also includes a specially made stand which fits around the man's abdomen and his feet rest on a 1 inch black painted wood block for 360 degree viewing! The bronze(without the stand) is approximately 8 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The stand adds about 1 inch to the total height. The Dogon Tribe: The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of the country of Mali. In the ... moreWest of the Continent of Africa, south of the Niger bend. The population numbers between 400.000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions. Their mask dances, wooden sculpture(making the bronze more rare! and their architecture. Dogon art is primarily sculpture. Dogon art revolves around religious values. Ideals, and freedoms. Dogon sculptures are not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of families, sanctuaries, or kept with the Hogon. The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. Themes found throughout Dogon sculpture consist of figures with raised arms. Superimposed bearded figures. Horsemen, stools with caryatids, women with children, figures covering their faces, women grinding pearl millet, women bearing vessels on their heads, donkeys bearing cups, musicians, dogs, quadruped-shaped troughs or benches, figures bending from the waist, mirror-images, aproned figures. And standing figures. Signs of other contacts and origins are evident in Dogon art. The Dogon people were not the first inhabitants of the cliffs of Bandiaga

Antique African Tribal Rare Dogon Cast Bronze - Horseman warrior
Fine Dogon Antique(circa mid- late 1800s) Cast Bronze Horseman. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) representing a HORSEMAN. The item is about 4" tall. In excellent antique condition. This cast equestrian figure expresses status. Prestige and power. It would bring honor to the ancestors, the current leadership and the owner of the sculpture. Although rare, horsemen as icon have existed for 1000 years in Mali. Some would depict a hogon, the supreme officeholder, a semi-divine leader of great wisdom, or even a mythological emissary from a distant land. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art ... moredeals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon st

African Dogon Horseman-new handmade lost wax brass
SquareTrade © AP6.0 Is it modern art or an archaeological artifact? You decide! This unusual piece is a representation of a Dogon warrior upon his horse. It may also be meant to honor an ancestor. As horses were considered a sign of wealth and prestige. It can stand, but is unstable. It could be utilized as a collector's addition, a paper weight, a decorative piece, or even an amulet. Its unique look comes from being hand made using the lost wax method. First. African artists shape a piece of wax to their desired design. Then, clay is placed around the wax figure and allowed to harden. The form is next heated, melting the wax, which runs out through straws which were carefully placed into the clay when still moist. When the mold is empty, molten brass is poured into the now vacant shape. Finally, the mold is broken open and any details ... moreare finished by the artisan. This is an extremely time-consuming effort, but it produces totally original figures in an authentically ancient medium. Please be sure to see our other brass items, also produced using the lost wax method, and equally unique! Because this piece is individually handmade of natural materials and in a traditional manner. Variations and irregularities occur. Pictures are representative of the basic theme only, and meaurements are approximate. Each is totally authentic and one-of-a-kind! Jim'

Old Dogon Miniature Wood Fetish Sacred Altar Ladder Mali Africa
Old Dogon Miniature Wood Fetish Sacred Altar Ladder Mali Africa An old Dogon miniature wood sacred altar fetish representing a ladder. This ladder is a miniature representation of the traditional ladder used by the Dogon to access the rooftops of their dwellings or granaries. The miniature wood ladder would lean against the small clay vessel so as to allow the soul of the deceased to climb up to the world beyond upon his ... morepassing where he would join his ancestors. Very light encrusted sacrificial patina- Collected in 2005 in the Dogon Cliffs. Mali. African Tribal Collection- DOGON/ TELLEM ANCESTRAL FIGURE from MALI Search WELCOME TO THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Authentic African antiquities& artefacts for discerning collectors Dogon/ Tellem Ancestral Figure, Mali Item Number: ST1210 Originates from: Mali Tribe: Dogon/ Tellem Approximate age: Mid 20th Century Measurements(inches) H 27 W 5 D 4.5 Measurements(cm) H 70 W 13 D 12 Materials: Wood Condition: Good DOGON Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense ... moreof a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head. Squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understanding to the initiated, who will decipher the statue according to the level of their knowledge. zyama.com) Mali The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary tools for their carvings. zyama.com) WELCOME TO THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Excellent quality Tribal Art at sensible prices YOUR BEST SOURCE FOR AUTHENTIC AFRICAN ANTIQUES(M

Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African SALE Was $99
Title, Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Paint, Approximate Age, 20th Century Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place ... morealmost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended Reading: Laude's AFRIC
