Title, Dogon Standing Female Figure Tellem Posture Africa, Type of Object, figure. Statue, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Pigment, ... moreencrustation, Approximate Age, mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, 54.5 inches H. x 11 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, hand cracked. Cracks in encrustation, old bug damage, chips. HEAVY! Additional Information: A standing female figure in the archaic"Tellem" pose. With arms raised to the heavens. This standing figure portrays Tellem ancient spirits that the Dogon venerate to bring rain to their dry land. The standing position of the figures with their arms upraised are said to be acting as intermediaries to deities for rain, or the point of contact with the world of the ancestors and as an honored ancestor kept in a family or village shrine. This female figure is the reality of the past and the present and must be considered in the context of Dogon belief in this world of dual but parallel realities. Around 1490. The Dogon fled the Mossi cavalry and its Islamic theology, settling in the imposing cliffs of Bandiagara, the land of the Tellem. As more Dogon migrated into the area, they absorbed the Tellem into their culture. In the process, there emerged what is recognized today as the"Dogon style. There are numerous theories about the meaning of these statues, from a"prayer for rain, to less specific ones, with the statue serving as a priestly intermediary for ancestral contact. Like most Dogon art, its true meaning is shrouded in myth. The Dogon, numbering around a quarter of a million, are one of most remarkable cultures in the world. Due to centuries of cultural isolation, Dogon art remains remarkably unaffected. They have become a laboratory, of sorts, for ethnologists. They are a very hospitable people, much to the relief of the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for visitors, they carefully guard the majority of their ritual and artistic traditions. The

Title, Dogon Maternity Figure Sitting Mother with Child in Back Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood, Approximate ... moreAge, 20th Century/last quarter, Dimensions, Height is 11.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good Most ofour pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Crack damages in several places. Large old chip in head, scrapes on forehead, on nose, and on mouth of mother and child. Additional Information: Dogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well used figure with the ‘child’ in the back projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the seated mother holding a child are commonly called ‘maternity’ figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure in the back is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the ‘mother’ representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among some of the finest art produced in West Africa and the obvious quality of carving is impressive. Recommended Reading: Francine Ndiaye. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piec

Damage/Repair, both legs broken off and repaired. Crack in one side of head and face, Additional Information: This well used sculpture is out of the ordinary when measured to ... morethe mainstream of Dogon art. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elder’s house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. The figure has a man’s beard and a woman’s breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. This old carving would hold a prominent place in a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batuluki

FINE OLD DOGON COUPLE ALTAR FIGURE MALI 19TH CENTURY OR OLDER
This exceptional carving of a Dogon Couple is depicted standing on a traditional African stool. The statue has a rich old encrusted dark brown to black patina and easily dates to the 19 th century or even earlier. There is a natural weathering to the piece. Exposing the wood grain patterns in many spots. Representing the primordial couple. This particular carving would have taken the spot of honor as a ritual object on the family shrine. There is an old tribal repair to the neck of one of the figures as well as some minor wood losses and some age cracks consistent with the antiquity of the carving. The piece is very stable. This was collected by an aunt(a grandaunt. Actually) during one of her travels abroad before WW II. Old Dogon African Bronze Bangle Amulet Fetish-Mali
Old Dogon Bronze Hogon Bangle An old Dogon woman’s wrist bangle made of bronze. Cast using the old technique of lost wax– the wide band has been shaped out of bees wax. Pigment, encrustation, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 13.75 inches x 8.5 inches W. x 7.5 inches D. Overall Condition, Fair Damage/Repair, old insect damage arrested. Chips, missing teeth, encrustation worn away in places, Additional Information: An impressive mask open eyes and mouth. And a large nose. The surface is covered with encrusted dark substances. The Mali Dogon produce an enormous pantheon of masks. At last count at least 80. Due to their sheer number, and the complex, secretive nature of Dogon religion, it is sometimes impossible to connect a mask with a ritual. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. ... moreThey moved west at some point, into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500 AD, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid, but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here, spread out over about 150 miles, most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged

An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Despite loads of beautiful sculpture. The Dogon people of Mali continue to be most famous for their elegantly carved doors, some of which can be truly spectacular in size and detail. The Dogon live in an arid region near the Niger river, backed by huge cliffs, a spot chosen for defensive reasons due to the regional tension created by their refusal to convert to Islam. Due to this relative isolation, they have been able to maintain their artistic traditions over the years despite the pressures of encroaching Islamic culture. At nearly half a million people, the Dogon were once primarily hunters, but have taken up agriculture over time to support their growing numbers. Millet and other crops are painstakingly raised on their arid fields and stored ... morein granaries generally connected to or very proximal to their homes. An incredibly artistic people, many functional objects around their homes are embellished in fantastic fashion, the most famous of which, are their incredible doors. There are two common door types used by the Dogon. That for their home itself, and that for their granary, the grain storage structure wherein their food stores are kept. The symbolic figures adorning it can be ancestors, supernatural beings, even breasts(a symbol of fertility) and are generally intended to keep the entrance sealed from intruders, thieves, and animal pests. This granary sized door is beautifully carved to feature numerous protective ancestral figures, as well as several dimensional geometric shapes. As is commonly the case, it is heavy for its size and sturdily constructed. The piece is in good overall condition, having only minor age-related cracking, and markings, which should be considered normal. It is otherwise free from serious breaks or repairs. The hinges seem to have minimal wear due to the fact that glass bottles are often cemented into the wall construction and used as a point of articulation for the door hinges. Th

DOGON MALE FEMALE PAIR - MALI
This gorgeous pair of small figures bears the hallmark characteristics of the Dogon style. Their heads feature flat jaws. The plane of their square shoulders is parallel to the plane of their forearms and upper thighs. They stand with their knees bent and their arms resting on their stomachs. Based on the compact size of this sculpture. It was most likely a personal work used for private religious rituals. It is even possible that it was meant as a sort of traveling altar that could accompany a caravan of traders during their voyages. An encrusted patina covering the pieces attests to their ceremonial significance. They were likely rubbed with libations of oil and animal blood and honored with sacrifices of food. Clearly, this pair possessed a spiritual power that was worthy of such reverence. Perhaps they represent the Nommo twins. The Nommo ... morewere mythical twins symbolic of the perfect union of the creator god, Amman, and the world egg. Many legends surround the Nommo, some contradictory, perhaps due to the inaccuracies of oral tradition. While the attribution of this pair is debatable, the beauty of these tiny masterpieces is not. A stunning example of the Dogon style in miniature form, this pair symbolizes the greater culture and artistry of the Dogon people themselves, one of the most celebrated tribes of sub-Saharan Africa. Measurements: 7.75 inches tall and 2.0 inches wide.
54 Antique Varied Color Blue, White, Clear Dogon Beads/1700's Dutch Trade Beads
Beautiful strand of antique. Circa 1700's blue, translucent, 1 white and 1 turquoise"Dogon" African trade beads. There are 54 beads and strand is about 29" around. Beads average about 16-18mm. They have wear from age and use, but each is unique, and varied in shade of blue, size and shapes. There is much information on Dogon beads. But briefly they are said to be made in the 1700's by the Dutch(although some sources claim many blue beads were also made in Germany) for trade in the Mali area, primarily to the Dogon- thus the name. Trade was mainly for gold and slaves, Beads came from the VERY large estate of a long time collector and dealer of African art. And most of his items were bought in the late 1960's and early 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Many of the things I was lucky enough to buy were ... morerare and very old. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting

Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, extensively worn. Additional Information: An extraordinary piece showing worn patina and encrustation in places. The containerest on a quadruped. On each side of the animal belly are a ... morecouple of small figure. Represnting Nommo mythical beings. The surface shows traces of use and good age. The present object comes from the Dogon people. Among the Dogon such sculpture with bowl were served as a container for ritual. Animal and human motifs on such containers recall the Dogon myth of creation. Amma. The Creator God, originally created eight humans known as Nommo, who were divided into four pairs, male and female, who in the Dogon creation myth come down to the earth in a kind of an ark, drawn by a horse or magically settling onto the earth. The figures, Nommo, refer not only to the mythological ancestors but also to the lineage ancestors of the owner of the containers. Therefore their imagery celebrates the gods while at the same time honoring the ancestors. Such figural containers have multiple purposes. The encrustation indicates the piece has been receiving sacrifices and offerings. It also shows signs of extended use and wear through time. Similar vessels were kept in the lineage elder's house and used to store offerings to be given to ancestors during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as goru. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, ... morethey found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended Reading

They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Living in small villages on the plain at the foot of the escarpment the Dogon farm in an environment that is marginal and demanding. As subsistence farmers they depend upon the food they produce to live storing it in granaries made of mud with thatched roofs and carved doors providing access to the foodstuffs held in the granary. Numerous granaries attest not only to the need to store food but equally reflect family structures as each wife will have her own granary where personal objects as well as family shrines known as Binu are kept.Openings into the granaries and shrines were sealed by carved doors or panels. Figures of humans. Animals or of symbolic motifs were carved in relief onto the surface of the door. The doors had pointed corners that served as hinges and some had a sculpted wooden lock to keep the door closed. This example has a number of human figures carved in relief on three sections strongly framed along the edges and middle. Most Dogon carvings of humans refer to primordial ancestors known as Nommo wh

A type of musical instrument found in West Africa. This figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. This sculpture would hold a strong presence in a collection reflecting the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor. Known for their art as well as their remarkable villages along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. The figures may represent an ancestor or equally a Nommo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God.The figures were probably placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest’s shrine where they would have offerings made to infuse them with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. On this figure the offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. Recommended Reading: Griaule. DOGON ENCRUSTED RITUAL FIGURE 19th CENTURY TELLEM INFLUENCE
0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Description: This encrusted kneeling figure would most probably have been associated with the Dogon ancestor cult. The size of this wooden statue indicates that it was carved either for personal or family use. There is a strong Tellem influence on this statue. Such figures were regularly sprinkled with libations of chicken blood mixed with dust and millet powder. The carving has a shelf-like shoulder and a metal thumb screw attached to the top of its head. A unique feature whose meaning I have never been able to figure out. Judging from the combination of a male head and rudimentary breasts. This appears to be a hermaphrodite figure. Associated with the primordial creation myth of the Dogon people. The figure is holding a ritual knife– an instrument often found in statues depicting male self-circumcision ... morefor the initiation into adulthood. The statue is encrusted all over with a thick layer of sacrificial material. Part of the domed base shows exposed wood fiber which has dried with age. C onservatively. The bronzes produced by the Djenne are especially rare and are highly sought after because of the great skill exhibited by these ancient metal workers in fashioning small pieces.
