They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their

Mali: Rare nice old Tribal used African Dogon Granary Door.
Mali: Rare and old Tribal used African Dogon Door. Height: 30 cm x 25 cm. The Dogon inhabit the large austere Bandiagara plateau. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. At first hunters, they now cultivate their staple diet millet. And also sorghum, and wheat on the cliff tops, which they have had to convert due to the scarcity of water sources. The Dogon are among African cultures that have remained closest to their ancestral traditions. One such tradition is building granaries and houses for grain storage. Doors of these granaries are often adorned with impressive carvings of animals or people which serve as invocations of deities or spirits. Or as symbols of status. The stored grain is considered"safe" when it is guarded by the ancestors whose images are depicted on granary doors.

Burkina Faso: Old and extremly RareTribal used African Dogon Gazelle mask.
Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Burkina Faso: extremly rare and Tribal used African Dogon Gazelle mask. Height: 42 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and ... moresocial influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. RARE DOGON METAL RITUAL STAFF FINIAL AGED OXIDIZED PATINA AFRICAN
The Dogon people of Mali were famed metal workers who produced a variety of metal objects. Both functional and decorative, of out of bronze and iron– all this in addition to their iconic wooden figures. Metal pieces crafted by this mysterious people are quite rare and are highly sought after because of the admirable skill and artistry exhibited by these tiny masterpieces. The metal figure in this auction depicts a man holding two large blades in front of him in pose very similar to a young male about to engage in the the act of ritual self-circumcision– perhaps a tribal rite of passage from the past. Interestingly. The facial features of this metal figure are very reminiscent to the faces on terra cotta figures of the earlier Djenne people who lived in the same area. This piece would originally have been used as a staff finial during ceremonial ... moredances. The metal is well-oxidized and covered with varied brown and green encrustation. I purchased this metal figure from a private Belgian collector who told me that it was a bronze piece but I cannot be sure of this piece's metal composition since I am not an expert in this area- I will leave it to the next owner to do any further testing if he or she desires. Whatever the material may be. This is clearly a superb old piece cast in the traditional lost wax method. SUPERB RARE DOGON TELL FIGURE SACRIFICIAL PATINA FAMILY PROVENANCE
Here is a truly rare old Dogon statue carved in an iconic Tellem posture. It is a double statue with a smaller secondary figure on the back panel of the carving. Note the superb old encrusted sacrificial patina- so prized by collectors. There are three metal studs attached to the forehead of the main figure(a small reminder that the Dogon were fine metal craftsmen) The presence of a smaller secondary figure probably relates to the Dogon mythology of creation of the primal human. The raised arms(a posture usually invoking rain) of the larger figure pay homage to the mysterious Tellem people who occupied the very same cliffs where the present-day Dogon live. A custom-made wooden stand is included with this auction. I am currently letting go of most of my family’s modest ethnographic collection– a collection that was lovingly started by my grandfather ... morein the very early years of the 20 th century. My grandaunt(his sister) later traveled extensively and collected many interesting old objects from Africa and Asia. Gradually adding to a small but very interesting display of ethnographic pices. Should this particular Dogon piece not sell. I do not plan to relist it on eBay so I encourage you to consider either making either a bid or at least an offer on it. Please do not be afraid to make any reasonable offer– I am very motivated to thin down my personal collection in order to finance other projects. Dogon figures showing horses and riders depict the prestige and power surrounding an animal that has been associated with these qualities since it was introduced into West Africa more than a thousand years ago. In Dogon society. Horses were generally considered a luxury reserved for rich or powerful people. Horses occur in Dogon beliefs about the creation of the world and the horse and rider figures are seen as a symbol of a mythological personage. The events that shaped the Dogon to the present day people have been held in their memories. A people who have never used writing as a vehicle of thought. These memories are distorted by the mythical imagination by which their culture is engrossed. ... moreThe precise origins of the Dogon people. Like those of most other peoples, are lost in the mists of time. But their history, beginning at the period when they migrated into the region of the Bandiagara cliffs, has been handed down through oral traditions. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau. Were they overwhelmed and unsurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. Their myths, legends, and traditions retain the momory ot their predecessors. The leading part is assigined to small red men whom the Dogon call Andoumboulu, probably the ancestors of present-day Pygmies. The Andoumboulo were driven out of certain areas by men of normal size, the Tellem, probably the ancestors of the Kurumba of northern Yatenga province. When the Tellem in turn were driven from the cliff by the Dogon, they left behind, in sancturies located on the rocky and almost inaccessible heights, cult and funerary objects that included statuettes. In some places, as soon as fighting ended, alliances were established between the Dogon and the older inhabitants, and marriages tightened the bonds. In some viages the two populations coexisted peacefully. The

HIGHLY IMPORTANT OLD 19TH CENTURY DOGON VILLAGE TOTEM FAMILY PROVENANCE
This is a very rare type of Dogon carving. One which is hardly ever seen outside of certain Dogon villages in Mali. I was very lucky to have obtained this outstanding piece from my family’s unique ethnographic collection– a collection that was started by my grandfather in the very early years of the 20 th century and gradually added to by various members of the family. Most especially by a grandaunt who traveled during first half of the 20 th century in order to collect a variety of interesting old artifacts and ethnographic materials. According to my grandaunt. This carving was a village animal totem in the form of a monkey- almost never found outside of certain Dogon villages. This particular statue was an altar piece of the Binou sect. It would have been carved to protect the entire village and was usually kept away from the view of outsiders. ... moreIt is made from a very hard. Dense and heavy wood called gele- quite different from other lighter woods used for most traditional Dogon carvings. This statue has a stout. Cylindrical body and and a powerful yet elegant head gracefully carved with a rudimentary monkey face using a minimum of lines. Its right arm has been reattached with a nail. The entire carving has developed a rich overall shiny deep brown aged patina- one which only comes with great age and extended use. My grandaunt told me that the village from which it came dates the piece to the 19th century. Based on their oral history. I have seen only one other very similar piece in person– this one was in a gallery of tribal art in New York city. Just for reference. I have include two pictures(taken at the gallery itself) of that related, though slightly bigger statue. See the last two photographs in the set. There seems to have been very little research or documentation done on this type of atypical Dogon carving(probably because of the lack of abundant examples) but I hope that this will be rectified in the future. This was my grandaunt’s favorite pieces because of its artistic power and purity and

Dogon Standing Female Figure Tellem Posture African
Title, Dogon Standing Female Figure Tellem Posture Africa, Type of Object, figure. Statue, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Pigment, encrustation, Approximate Age, mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, 54.5 inches H. x 11 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, hand cracked. Cracks in encrustation, old bug damage, chips. HEAVY! Additional Information: A standing female figure in the archaic"Tellem" pose. With arms raised to the heavens. This standing figure portrays Tellem ancient spirits that the Dogon venerate to bring rain to their dry land. The standing position of the figures with their arms upraised are said to be acting as intermediaries to deities for rain, or the point of contact with the world of the ancestors and as an honored ancestor kept in a family or village shrine. This female ... morefigure is the reality of the past and the present and must be considered in the context of Dogon belief in this world of dual but parallel realities. Around 1490. The Dogon fled the Mossi cavalry and its Islamic theology, settling in the imposing cliffs of Bandiagara, the land of the Tellem. As more Dogon migrated into the area, they absorbed the Tellem into their culture. In the process, there emerged what is recognized today as the"Dogon style. There are numerous theories about the meaning of these statues, from a"prayer for rain, to less specific ones, with the statue serving as a priestly intermediary for ancestral contact. Like most Dogon art, its true meaning is shrouded in myth. The Dogon, numbering around a quarter of a million, are one of most remarkable cultures in the world. Due to centuries of cultural isolation, Dogon art remains remarkably unaffected. They have become a laboratory, of sorts, for ethnologists. They are a very hospitable people, much to the relief of the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for visitors, they carefully guard the majority of their ritual and artistic traditions. The
RARE OLD DOGON MYSTERIOUS CUBISTIC RITUAL FIGURE ENCURSTED PATINA AFRICAN FETISH
Here is a superb example of the abstract. Cubistic aesthetic in African statuary which so captivated European artists of the early 20th century. This mysterious and rare old ritual object or fetish from the Dogon tribe of Mali probably dates from the early 20 th century or earlier. It is female in form as shown by the protruding breasts but. I nstead of a human neck and a head. The shoulders suddenly flare out into a(rounded) disc-shaped platform which immediately narrows and then flares out once again, this time into a curious ridged conical shape. Another disc-like platform sits on top of the piece. Crowned by a circular metal plate. Enigmatic ritual figures such as this emerge out of Dogon country. From time to time, serving to deepen our curiosity about this tribe’s creation mythology and cosmic spiritual belief system. The piece has ... morea well-worn. Slightly-encrusted patina with white flecks of old sacrificial material on its back side. There are some wood losses consistent with age such as a slightly wider gap in one of the ridges at the back of the"head" section. The underside of the statue’s base appears to be termite-eroded as might be expected of an authentic piece. This is old tribal damage from use- the piece is now very stable. The ritual object was collected by a grandaunt sometime during the first half of the 20 th century and was passed on to me through my father. This is an elegant figure depicting a sitting female with a long and curved back, long foiled legs, with a turned head in a relaxing movement. Bronze. Brass and iron figures are identified with Dogon myths of creation, as the blacksmith was one of the first primordial beings known as Nommo created by Ama who is one of the major Dogon deities. The identity between the Nommo and the blacksmith creates a bond and an identity that gives the blacksmith special powers which include the ability to call down rain so important in Dogon life. Figures such as this would be placed in the Binu sanctuary, a sacred shelter where the Dogon keep objects of magical importance. This sculpture reflects the artistry, power, and authority of the Dogon blacksmith, as it was he who also carved the well-known wooden sculptures used by the Dogon.
