With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the 14th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is apparent. The Niongo

Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, People, ... moreLobi, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, Early to Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 13.25 inches long, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Rusted patina Lobi Iron Snake Currency. African Metalwork Additional Information: A hand-forged iron snake coming from the Lobi. The Lobi live as farmers and spend much time in their fields. They have produced numerous iron. Brass, and bronze figures currencies and and jewelry depicting the snake. This can be understood as the snake is very often associated to the Lobi mythical beings. Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The tails are depicted by a tapering form and the body has the usual undulated snake form. Among the Lob

Antique Cast Bronze African Tribal Rare Dogon Akan Figurative ring
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Cast Bronze Gold weight. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing a Figurative ring. The item is about 1 1/4" high. Size 8" in excellent antique condition. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing it ... moreto its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understanding to the initiated, who

►SUPERB OLD DOGON MASK w/ NOMMO SUPERSTRUCTURE ~ African Art ► SALE was $2200
For further details, please visit the item description at our Website(click on the image above) Superb Old Dogon Mask with Nommo Superstructure(Mali) Description: On offer from our personal collection is this distinctive old face mask from the Dogon peoples of Mali. One of our first acquisitions of ethnographic art. We were fortunate to acquire this piece in the early 1970s from private collectors/dealers who left their native Africa to journey to the U.S. to exhibit the remarkable tribal antiquities field-collected by their father, who had remained in Africa. We believe this piece dates back to the 1940s or'50s. With its thin-walled construction. This well-carved mask is tall, rather slender, exhibits classic features. Incised scarifications create multiple patterns across the face, as well as on the torso& arms of the nommo superstructure ... moreperched atop the mask. Set in under the brow, open triangles form the eyes of the mask, while the nose takes on the traditional'arrow' shape used by the Dogon in much of their carvings, not least of which is the nommo figure that adorns this piece. Zoomorphic ears frame the upper brow of the mask's face. The powerful, crouching nommo superstructure bears hermaphroditic characteristics with its breasts& bearded face. Attachment holes perforate the side-rims of the piece. With a fine. Well-developed patina, the mask shows age- use-related wear. Despite some imperfections in the wood, including old insect damage(arrested) scrapes& abrasions, dry age-cracks, a few old chips(including those along the bottom& back rims) the mask is in good overall condition. A small area to the left on the mask's upper brow has worn through, forming a small, irregular hole. At just over 24-inches in height, this imposing piece makes a powerful, compelling display, would be an exce

Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Center Mali African
Title, Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Centre Mali African Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 9 inches H. x 6.25 inches W. Overall Condition, poor, Damage/Repair, large cracks in seat and in base. Chips in places, A Dogon stool with cylindrical seat and base. The center is decorated with figural"three pillars decorated with carved figures. This stool was also used as a shrine piece. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders ... moreon horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. 69187* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct In

Ritual dance stool of a Dogon shaman, Mali, Africa
The Dogon people of Mali live on the escarpment of the Bandirarga plateau where this very low stool was carried by a shaman as he went from village to village for ritual dances or healing ceremonies. It still has the strap he would use for carrying which is wrapped around the neck of the animal and the tail. The tail has several holes into which lengths of wool are threaded to form the tail. The saddle is treated the same way. It is heavy. Carved from one piece of wood. The animal the Dogon people depict on such a stool is a horse. Field-collected in the 1950's this is a rare collector's piece. The stool measures 28 1/2 inches long.

Dogon Figure with Upraised Arms in Tellem Posture Mali African
Title, Dogon Figure with Upraised Arms in Tellem Posture Mali African, Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 17.5 inches H. x 2.25 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, worn patina. Chipped base, Additional Information: A standing female figure with in the archaic"Tellem" pose. With arms raised to the heavens. This standing figure portrays Tellem, ancient spirits that the Dogon venerate to bring rain to their dry land. The standing position of the figures with their arms upraised are said to be acting as intermediaries to deities for rain. These figures are modeled after much older figures found in the caves, where the Dogon buried their dead. Around 1490. The Dogon fled the Mossi cavalry and its Islamic ... moretheology, settling in the imposing cliffs of Bandiagara, the land of the Tellem. As more Dogon migrated into the area, they absorbed the Tellem into their culture. In the process, there emerged what is recognized today as the"Dogon style. There are numerous theories about the meaning of these statues, from a"prayer for rain, to less specific ones, with the statue serving as a priestly intermediary for ancestral contact. Like most Dogon art, its true meaning is shrouded in myth. The Dogon, numbering around a quarter of a million, are one of most remarkable cultures in the world. Due to centuries of cultural isolation, Dogon art remains remarkably unaffected. They have become a laboratory, of sorts, for ethnologists. They are a very hospitable people, much to the relief of the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for visitors, they carefully guard the majority of their ritual and artistic traditions. The enduring fascination with the Dogon shows no signs of abatement. GREAT OLD DOGON OMONO WHITE MONKEY MASK MALI #2262 - For African Art Gallery
DOGON OMONO WHITE MONKEY MASK#2262 Tribe: Dogon. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Size: 28" 71.1 cm) Tall. Item: 2262 Condition: Good. Some age wear and bug damage. According to Dogon beliefs. The monkey represents wild, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding Dogon person is expected to behave. The Dogon utilize three types of monkey masks which are identified solely by their color rather than their shape. For the Dogon, Dege is the black monkey, while the white monkey is known as Omono, and the red monkey is called Ko. The white monkey mask. Omono, composed of a face mask crowned by the head& bust of a monkey. The white monkey masker dances in the dance sequence to the fast dege rhythm. His dance is similar to that of the rabbit, consists of hopping ... morefrom leg to leg while crossing one leg diagonally in front of the other. The man who wears the mask leans on a stick& sits apart from the crowd in a melancholy attitude, but he is encouraged to dance by the singers who chant: Monkey on a high tree, all eyes are on you, the drum is beating for you, move your head, move your legs, all the people have their eyes on you. The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Mali African Additional Information: A long headrest in the form of an ... moreanimal with four legs. This headrest comes from the Dogon people. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This headrest/stool may reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. Scholars do not have enough evidences to confirm if the Dogon have produced and used headrests. Number of them state that most of the headrests attributed to the Dogon were carved by the Tellem, an old population who first occupied the Dogon region. A few scholars support that headrests were carved and used by the Dogon, especially by Hogon priests and during burial ceremonies. The head on this headrest/stool is similar to these found on some Dogon artifacts. Recommended Reading: Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. Amez DOGON STATUARY, Ezra

Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Burkina Faso: Old& Rare Tribal used African medicine Jug from the Dogon. Height: 38 cm. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. ed African mask from Igbo. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritua

BACKGROUND Seventy-eight different ... moretypes of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. All of them have large geometric eyes and stylized features. Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance is only understood by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask to a captivated audience. In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddl
