Worn areas, age cracks, chips, overall condition fair. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND Seventy-eight different types of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. All of them have large geometric eyes and stylized features. Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance is only understood by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask to a captivated audience. In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle-

Rare Antique African Hand-Forged Iron Double Snake Spiral/Dogon Shrine, Ancestor
Rare. A ntique hand forged iron double snake sculpture. The two snakes twisted around each other and forming a coil or spiral with a horned snake at the top. 8 1/2" H x 7" W at bottom of spiral; an old rust patina showing age. Research from the only similar piece I could find on the internet(as opposed to the many. More common Lobi snake currency works) stated that this is a Dogon ancestor figure, in the shape of a snake that led the people to their present home. It would have been placed in a shrine and probably used in the Lebe cult. Item came from the very large estate of African art that belonged to a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer who bought many of his things in the 1960's and 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Much of what I bought was very old and many things rare. gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526)

Old Male Dogon Ancestor Statue Mali. The figure represents an ancestor or equally a Nommo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God. Such figures may have been placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest's shrine where offerings would have been made to infuse his with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not

They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Dogon Female Tellem Posture Mali African SALE Was $490
Title, Dogon Standing Female Figure Tellem Posture Africa, Type of Object, figure. Statue, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Pigment, encrustation, Approximate Age, mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, 54.5 inches H. x 11 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, hand cracked. Cracks in encrustation, old bug damage, chips. HEAVY! Additional Information: A standing female figure in the archaic"Tellem" pose. With arms raised to the heavens. This standing figure portrays Tellem ancient spirits that the Dogon venerate to bring rain to their dry land. The standing position of the figures with their arms upraised are said to be acting as intermediaries to deities for rain, or the point of contact with the world of the ancestors and as an honored ancestor kept in a family or village shrine. This female ... morefigure is the reality of the past and the present and must be considered in the context of Dogon belief in this world of dual but parallel realities. Around 1490. The Dogon fled the Mossi cavalry and its Islamic theology, settling in the imposing cliffs of Bandiagara, the land of the Tellem. As more Dogon migrated into the area, they absorbed the Tellem into their culture. In the process, there emerged what is recognized today as the"Dogon style. There are numerous theories about the meaning of these statues, from a"prayer for rain, to less specific ones, with the statue serving as a priestly intermediary for ancestral contact. Like most Dogon art, its true meaning is shrouded in myth. The Dogon, numbering around a quarter of a million, are one of most remarkable cultures in the world. Due to centuries of cultural isolation, Dogon art remains remarkably unaffected. They have become a laboratory, of sorts, for ethnologists. They are a very hospitable people, much to the relief of the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for visitors, they carefully guard the majority of their ritual and artistic traditions. The

Please see picture with penny for size comparison(US penny is 19 mm diameter) Strand Length, 27 inches(includes string/raffia) Additional information: Most glass beads produced in Europe from the late 1800s to mid 1900s fall into one of three categories: wound. Drawn and molded. Wound beads were manufactured by winding ... moremolten glass around a metal rod until it took on the form of the finished bead. Once the glass cooled and hardened, there was no need to perforate it—removing the metal rod left a hole through which the bead could be threaded. Using the wound glass method, beads could be manufactured in small workshops without the need for massive and expensive equipment. But each bead had to be created individually, making cheap, large-scale production impossible. Because of this, another technique was developed and perfected in the famous bead-making workshops of Venice and elsewhere in Europe. In the drawn glass method, molten glass was affixed to metal plates and then drawn out by two workers walking in opposite directions. The malleable glass would stretch until it became a long thin cane which could then be cut into small sections and formed into beads. The information above is drawn primarily from Lois Sherr Dubin's. Dogon figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. Dogon figures are among some of the finest art produced in West Africa and the obvious quality of carving is impressive. The details are this wonderful old Dogon bronze jewelry box are fantastic. It is a very well made and solid antique piece with a lid that fits very well. It is a very heavy piece and has no holes in it like most of these older bronze pieces. It was probably intended to hold valuables but it is possible that it might have held medicine. Most of the medicine boxes are not this well made although they are interesting. I have four of them and they all cost me above my opening bid. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the 14th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is apparent. The Niongom people occupied

Vintage Dogon,Mali Indigo Stitch Dyed Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/48"x62"
Beautiful. Vintage handwoven cotton and indigo stripped stitch dyed African textile, made by the Dogon in Mali. Piece has 5 strips sewn together, each dyed with a stitch/sewing technique that has an interesting and different herring bone patterns on both the front and back; 48" W x 62" L; hand hemmed at either end; very soft from wear and washing; and in very good condition with no major holes or damage(some stitching between panels loose, some dirt that looks like it could be easily washed off at one end, one area of tiny spots) All the works I will be listing are hard to find. Older indigo textiles in very good conditon, with the old dyed striped patterns, and some in the old stitch and resist patterns as well. All were used and soft from wear and washing. I was lucky to have“first choice” of two tubs of indigos as they arrived ... moredirectly from Africa. And have many. Unique, Vintage African,Dogon Indigo Resist Dyed,2-Sided Textile/Cotton/36”x64"
Beautiful. Unique, vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali. Textiles are dyed with the resist, stitch dying technique, and this is one of the few I have found that is two-sided, with a second, heart design pattern on one side of an already resist dyed piece, probably done with some type of stamping and bleaching technique This piece is approximately 36" x 64” 8 strips sewn together; very soft from use and wear; in very good condition with the exception of a tear on one side. All of the older works may have minor issues with strip seams loosening and/or tiny but hard to see holes. Or loosening of a weave, from the removal of stitches when dying is completed. gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526)
Vintage Dogon,Mali Indigo Dyed Striped Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/40"x58"
Vintage handwoven cotton and indigo dyed African fabric. Made by the Dogon in Mali. This piece is made of 6 strips of various patterns of striped blue and white strips, recycled from older, damaged fabrics, a common tradition) resewn together and making for an interesting overall design. 40" x 58" Textile is very soft from wear and use and is in very good condition for its age and reconstruction. Minor damage includes edge wear and fraying; a few minor spots toward the white patch(see photos) that are hard to see; and some“puckering where the older strips have been resewn together. I was lucky to have“first choice” of two tubs of indigos. As they arrived directly from Africa, and have many that I will be selling, including striped indigos as well as patterned ones. I picked ones that were in the best condition, and/or the most unique, ... morebut there are almost always a few flaws, which I will note in my listings and photographs. I also later bought more indigos that are damaged, but very good for cutting, sewing projects, pillows, etc. and I will be listing these as well, at discount prices depending upon their condition. This later group has been washed and all are clean. gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526) RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*a4%601gc%3E-144c0657915-0xfc-
Vintage African,Mali, Dogon Indigo Dyed Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/45”x62"
Beautiful vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo striped textile. Made by the Dogon in Mali. This wonderful looking piece is an older almost“patchwork” cloth made, as is common, of pieced parts of even older textiles that have been damaged in some areas. The look of different colors, some with yellow and blue-green in them, some just blue and white stripes, has a unique, abstract, and contemporary look to it. The indigo is approximately 45" x 62” but all sides not even. All the individual pieces are in very good condition. Although some seams are slightly“bunched up” and a few seams loose but can be easily sewn back together. All the pieces I will be listing are hard to find. Older indigo pieces in very good conditon, with the old dyed striped patterns, and some in the old stitch and resist patterns as well. All were used and ... moresoft from wear and washing. I was lucky to have“first choice” of two tubs of indigos as they arrived directly from Africa. And have many. The more remarkable they seem. Their art, like this small but classic figure, is also astounding, as their masks and other objects reflect a purity of style rarely encountered in modern Africa. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point, into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback, the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a magic kingdom. The Dogon have also taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding, and colorful masks reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars

Believed to date back as far as the 17th century. These beads were often used in Dutch villages to make garden mosaics, instead of having flowers in the formal gardens during the late ... moreseventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, old crackin one foot. Chips and scratches Additional Information: A Dogon headrest supported by a carved animal head in each end. The center has three strong feet resting on an oblong base. This headrest is carved in a hard wood and is in good condition besides the shallow crack in one foot. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against ... morethe core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This headrest/stool may reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. Scholars do not have enough evidences to confirm if the Dogon have produced and used headrests. Number of them state that most of the headrests attributed to the Dogon were carved by the Tellem, an old population who first occupied the Dogon region. A few scholars support that headrests were carved and used by the Dogon, especially by Hogon priests and during burial ceremonies. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. ... moreThe millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses.
