Title, Dogon Mother and Child Maternity Figure Mali. Africa, Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Encrustation(organic ... morematerials) Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good Most ofour pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Shallow cracks in places. Chips Additional Information: Dogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well carved figure with her arms wrapped around the ‘child’ sitting on her lap projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the seated mother holding a child are commonly called ‘maternity’ figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure held within the female’s arms is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the ‘mother’ representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among some of the finest art produced in West Africa and the obvious quality of carving is impressive. Recommended Reading: Francine Ndiaye. The face is very worn. With a l ong beard. At the back of the head it looks like a small piece has broken from the hair to the continuation on his back. The shoulders are a solid block from which the almost emaciated frame curves away evenly. This a stunning example of a very old ancestral Dogon figure and wears heavy patina and age cracks. The Dogon people of the Bandiagara escarpment. Mali, have been described as the most studied and least understood tribal group in ... moreAfrica. Their culture is exceptionally ancient and complex. They moved to this area in the 15th century, escaping slavery at the hands of Islamic groups, and displaced a number of tribes that were living on the escarpment at the time. They are artistically prolific, making masks/figures in stone, iron, bronze/copper and of course wood, as well as cave/rock painting. While Islam is prominent in the Dogon area, their art is defiantly figurative, a tradition which of course is technically banned under Islamic law. There are 78 mask forms still in production(and numerous extinct variants) Which have applications including circumcision, initiation, funeral rites(damas) and the commemoration of twins, snakes, ancestors(nommo) and hogons(holy men) Decorated secular items such as headrests, granary doors/locks and troughs are also known. The Dogon took inspiration from Tellem(lit. we found them” sculptures recovered from caves on the escarpment, and may be the stylistic inheritors of the Djenne tradition. Most figures were not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly kept by the spiritual leader(hogon) away from the public eye, in family houses or sanctuaries. The Dogon

The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This sculpture reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. In some cases they would be real animal teeth. The dark patina adds to the dramatic haracter of this mask. Early researchers identified over seventy different types of masks that would appear danced by members of the men’s Awa Society performing primarily during the Dama funerary ceremonies. This mask could be identified as a the Hunter(see a close similar mask in Ladislas Segy boo: Mask of Black Africa. Fig. 21) It would be worn by a member of the Awa society. The hunter would have participated in a mime during a funeral with the rabbit(who was a trickster) This mask has holes at the sides to allow a piece of wood to be pushed through so that the dancer would bite down on the stick to control the mask. The bar is replaced here by rubber. Such masks were stored or trashed in rock shelters when it was thought that they had outlived their usefulness or simply were replaced by a new mask. Though most Dogon masks are for funerary use, on occasion they will be danced for other reasons. To say the Dogon are one of the world's most fascinating cultures is an understatement. ANTIQUE DOGON FETISH FIGURE OF MOTHER AND CHILD FROM MALI, WEST AFRICA
The Dogon inhabit the Bandiagara cliffs in Mali. An extremely imposing setting in a very bare and austere environment. They are one of the very few existing ethnic groups to have remained close to their ancestral traditions both in artistic expression and in ceremonial practice. The Dogon people live on a large plateau. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the i4th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. ... moreDogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is apparent. The Niongom people occupied the southern part of the cliff during the ioth century and carved elongated statues with arrow-shaped noses, lozenge eyes and arms hanging at their sides. The form of Niongom carvings also characteristically followed the shape of the wood. It is thought they were placed on altars which, when later abandoned, were left untouched. With the passing of time, the figures gained a weathered patina. A fetish is a statue or object with magical power. Like an amulet, talisman, or good luck charm. In traditional tribal Africa, these beliefs are manifested

Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Dogon Male Figure Standing on Base Mali Africa
Title, Dogon Standing Male Figure Mali Africa, Type of Object, Carving. Figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon. See also Malinke or Minyanga, Materials, Wood. Encrustation, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 21 inches H. x 4 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, chips and cracks in places, Additional Information: An interesting Dogon male figure standing on custom base. The figure was used as an ancestor Nommo or as a shrine piece devotee to Nommo. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements ... morewith neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This sculpture reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. West of the Dogon heartland the Dogon interact with the other major art producing people of Mali, the Bamana(Bambara) These figures show the influence of the Mande speaking Bamana(the Dogon are Gur language speakers – different language, different cultures! in sculptural attributes well defined. These include a squared body, keel shaped head and ‘U’- shaped ears. A Bamana or Malinke blacksmith could easily have carved the figure. If truly a Dogon figure it represented an ancestor identified to an individual, family, village or region. If an ancestor it represents either a familial ancestor or one of the original eight Nommo who descended to earth to create us, the world and continue to be interested in the affairs of livings. Antique Rare African Tribal Dogon Cast Brobze Camel Riding Warriors
Fine Mega Rare Antique African Tribal Benin Cast Brobze Camel Riding Warriors This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is in excellent antique condition. From the private Collector. Country: Old Benin Kingdom. Nigeria Material: Bronze. Size: 9" x 16.5" Circa: 18th century Condition: Excellent Status: Private Collection. United States An outstanding piece of history. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could ... moresay that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of

abstract brass metal Dogon or Mossi tribal sculpture statue African doll figure
This is a fine piece of abstract West African metalwork. It is a unique doll or figure with an elongated torso which leans off to one side. The torso also has some crosshatching hinting at an almost snakelike quality. It has stubby arms and interestingly it's navel is larger then it's breast's. The face is geometric and lacks definition though has a lot of character. This items does not stand on it's own nor does it seem it was ever meant to but was made perhaps to serve some other function such as a charm or altar piece. I am unsure of the exact tribal group this was made by but I would say most probably either Dogon or Mossi. This item measures approx 16 cm in length. I am by no means an expert on African art or sculpture but am very happy to learn! If for any reason you have more information about a certain item. Such as ... moreethnic group of traditional function, I would be happy to hear from you so I can both learn and improve my knowledge for future listings. We our currently based in Dakar. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) Depicting a Horseman. The item is about 9" x 8 1/2" In excellent antique condition. This cast equestrian figure expresses status. Prestige and power. It would bring honor to the ancestors, the current leadership and the owner of the sculpture. Although rare, horsemen as icon have existed for 1000 years in Mali. Some would depict a hogon, the supreme officeholder, a semi-divine leader of great wisdom, or even a mythological emissary from a distant land. Dogon art is extremely versatile. soapstone seated african figure-w/ a fulani hat -blind Dogon elder Ogotemmêli?
Now here is a heavy soapstone sculpture weighing 1 3/4" and it appears African in design. He measures 7" tall and about 2 1/2" wide. It scratches easily as does most soapstone. Hence the light specs in the pictures. If you rub oil on it they go away. Brown shoe polish works well too and it will polish up nicely. Most African Soapstone is carved in Kenya. It is called the Kisii from the Kisii region of Kenya. The hat appears to be straw otherwise known as a fulani hat which is worn by the Fula people or Fulani or Fulbe- the largest migratory ethnic group in the world. However the piece here may depict the blind Dogon elder Ogotemmêli who taught the main symbols of the Dogon religion to the French anthropologist Marcel Griaule in October 1946. Griaule had lived amongst the Dogon people for fifteen years before this meeting ... morewith Ogotemmêli had taken place. Ogotemmêli taught Griaule the religious stories in the same way that Ogotemmêli had learned them from his father and grandfather; instruction which he had learned over the course of more than twenty years. What makes the record so important from a historical perspective is that the Dogon people were still living in their oral culture at the time their religion was recorded. They were one of the last people in Africa to lose their independence and come under French rule. Whether or not all of this applies to this piece is just conjecture.you be the judge-or share your knowledge.thanks for looking!

Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks in head. In abdomen, and in stool; chips and scratches in places, Additional Information: A male figure standing on a carved stool. The figure represens a Nommo ... moreand was used as a shrine piece. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. The Dogon have even made their funeral
Dogon Carved Animal with Bowl and Small Figures Wheeler Collection

Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, extensively worn. Age and cracks, chips. exposure to the elements, crack in bowl, repair on the tail, encrustation in places, Provenance: Richard and Libby Wheeler Collection. Richard and Elizabeth Wheeler are noted Chicago collectors of both Native American and African art. We have recently purchased their superb African collection. Certificate of provenance available! Additional Information: An extraordinary piece showing worn patina and encrustation in places. The containerest on a quadruped. On each side of the animal belly are a ... morecouple of small figure. Represnting Nommo mythical beings. The surface shows traces of use and good age. The present object comes from the Dogon people. Among the Dogon such sculpture with bowl were served as a container for ritual. Animal and human motifs on such containers recall the Dogon myth of creation. Amma. The Creator God, originally created eight humans known as Nommo, who were divided into four pairs, male and female, who in the Dogon creation myth come down to the earth in a kind of an ark, drawn by a horse or magically settling onto the earth. The figures, Nommo, refer not only to the mythological ancestors but also to the lineage ancestors of the owner of the containers. Therefore their imagery celebrates the gods while at the same time honoring the ancestors. Such figural containers have multiple purposes. The encrustation indicates the piece has been receiving sacrifices and offerings. It also shows signs of extended use and wear through time. Similar vessels were kept in the lineage elder's house and used to store offerings to be given to ancestors during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as goru. Offerings and sacrifices were conducted to worship and please the spirit of these ancestors for the well-being of individuals, families, and the entire community. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. Ancient old Dogon Ancestor Mask Mali African Art Museum Quality Fantastic!
Dogon Ancestor Mask Mali Africa 31 inches tall X 8 inches wide X 6 inches deep Heavy old dry petrified wood Age: Unknown 100 + years Massive old mask is almost petrified and is a one of a kind piece. This piece is almost eerie and has the mystique that makes African Art so mysterious. The Dogon. A complex and spiritual people, have a blithering array of ritual art objects. Though they have been studied by scholars for many years, the usage and naming of these artworks remains elusive. There are close to 100 different wooden masks, countless figural statuary sizes and forms, and innumerable smaller objects, from door locks to metal castings to jewelry to items that defy meaningful classification. Most of these artworks are associated with the staggering number of Dogon ceremonies and festivals, which are mostly off-limits to outsiders. The ... morefoundation of these ceremonies, from agricultural rites, to initiations to funerals and beyond, lies in the many myths absorbed by the Dogon. Location: Mali during their ancient flight from northern Africa. Perhaps Egypt, to their present location along the Bandiagara escarpment. The Dogon also have a powerful attachment to the natural world-from rocks to plants to the animals of the bush. More art-more mystery. Their creation myth revolves around a creator god named"Ammo" and his four pairs of offspring known as"nommo. Figural representations of the primordial pairs show up in artworks produced for virtually every Dogon ritual setting. There are names for some masks, mostly abstract and stylized, like the"kanaga, and"satimbe, and also many with totem animals associated with them, but the origin of the names is unknown, as is almost everything about Dogon art. Volumes have been written, but alas most is only scholarly speculation. The most well-known artworks of the Dogon are their ceremonial masks. Of which there are perhaps 100. A few of them have names, but it is somewhat doubtful that these are Dogon names. It is more likely, since the Dogon are secr
Vintage African,Dogon Indigo Resist Dyed Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/45”x 61
Beautiful vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric. Made by the Dogon in Mali. Textiles are dyed with the resist, stitch dying technique and each piece is unique. All the ones I will be listing are hard to find. Older indigo pieces in very good conditon, with the old dyed patterns, and all were used and soft from wear and washing. This piece is approximately 45" x 64” but since all pieces are handmade. Some side measurements not even. In fact, since there is a variation in color in half of the cloth I think this piece was made of parts of two pieces. I was told that it is a common occurance to make new works when parts of another get too worn or damaged) I do like the color variations in this however. I was lucky to have“first choice” of two tubs of indigos. As they arrived directly from Africa, and have many that I will ... morebe selling. I picked ones that were in the best condition, and/or the most unique, but there are almost always a few flaws, which I will note in my listings and photograph1. gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526)
