Dogon Figure Upraised Arms Tellem Mali Africa SALE WAS $150
Title, Dogon Figure with Upraised Arms in Tellem Posture Mali African, Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 17.5 inches H. x 2.25 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, worn patina. Chipped base, Additional Information: A standing female figure with in the archaic"Tellem" pose. With arms raised to the heavens. This standing figure portrays Tellem, ancient spirits that the Dogon venerate to bring rain to their dry land. The standing position of the figures with their arms upraised are said to be acting as intermediaries to deities for rain. These figures are modeled after much older figures found in the caves, where the Dogon buried their dead. Around 1490. The Dogon fled the Mossi cavalry and its Islamic ... moretheology, settling in the imposing cliffs of Bandiagara, the land of the Tellem. As more Dogon migrated into the area, they absorbed the Tellem into their culture. In the process, there emerged what is recognized today as the"Dogon style. There are numerous theories about the meaning of these statues, from a"prayer for rain, to less specific ones, with the statue serving as a priestly intermediary for ancestral contact. Like most Dogon art, its true meaning is shrouded in myth. The Dogon, numbering around a quarter of a million, are one of most remarkable cultures in the world. Due to centuries of cultural isolation, Dogon art remains remarkably unaffected. They have become a laboratory, of sorts, for ethnologists. They are a very hospitable people, much to the relief of the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for visitors, they carefully guard the majority of their ritual and artistic traditions. The enduring fascination with the Dogon shows no signs of abatement. Exquisite African Art - Dogon Omono White Monkey Mask Used in Tribal Film
Exquisite African Art- Dogon Omono White Monkey Mask Used in Tribal Film Dogon Omono White Monkey Mask Tribe: Dogon Origin: Mali Materials: Wood Dimensions cm: 55 Tall x 16 Wide Approx Age: Mid- Later 20th Century This beautifully carved Dogon Omono Mask“white monkey Mask” is a bit of a film star! It was used in the re-make of a 1950′s tribal film“statues also die” which the film producer“Duncan Campbell” successfully filmed. I don’t think this lovely mask will earn its own star on the Hollywood’s walk of fame but will definitely steal someones heart as it is so lovely! A later 20th century piece covered in red. Black and white spots. The lower of the mask has had some damage to the 2 sides up from where the bite stick holes were and has split up, and some old insect damage which is long gone. The monkey itself has 2 faint hairline cracks ... moreon the body and a chip of wood missing on the chin. According to Dogon beliefs. The monkey represents wild, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior– the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding tribes person is expected to behave. The Dogon utilize three types of monkey masks which are identified solely by their color rather than their shape. Dege is known as the black monkey, while the white monkey is known as Omono, and the red monkey is called Ko. The white monkey mask. Omono, composed of a face mask crowned by the head& bust of a monkey. The white monkey masker dances in the dance sequence to the fast dege rhythm. His dance is similar to that of the rabbit, consists of hopping from leg to leg while crossing one leg diagonally in front of the other. The man who wears the mask leans on a stick& sits apart from the crowd in a melancholy attitude, but he is encouraged to dance by the singers who chant: Monkey on a high tree, all eyes are on you, the drum is beating for you, move your head, move your legs, all the people have their eyes on you. There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. And for the most part they all util

Burkina Faso The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elder’s house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. The figure has a man’s beard and a woman’s breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. This old carving would hold a prominent place in a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batuluki

The age and high quality of this mask as well as its rarity make it a special piece to add to any collection. Cap masks such as this are uncommon among the Dogon. This one indicates a Senufo influence. As the Senufo excel in the production of cap masks like this. Examples of Dogon headpieces are difficult to find. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting

Vintage Dogon,Mali Indigo Dyed Striped Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/42"x60"
Beautiful. Vintage handwoven cotton and indigo dyed African fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali. This piece was woven in a nice pattern of larger and smaller stripes of light, medium and dark blue(almost black) indigo, as well as white, and is made of 12 strips sewn together. 42" x 60” Hand hemmed at either end. Textile is soft and basically in very good-excellent condition for its age and use. For some reason. Maybe due to wrinkling on the this piece or the mottling in the colors, it isn’t showing up as nice as it really is, but I see no damage or holes, other than areas where seams have been resewn. There is one area(center, left on first picture) that looks like a hole, but it actually is the weaving changes and stripes ending for some reason(or it could be a very good reweaving of a past hole, but can’t tell) I had first choice from ... morefive containers of indigos as they arrived from Africa. And was able to pick the ones in the best condition and with the most unique designs. Please continue to watch my site as I make more available from my large“stash” 522) gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)

Vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric. Made by the Dogon in Mali. This piece is approximately 38" x 58” Has 8 hand woven, indigo dyed cotton panels sewn together lengthwise, one strip showing a black stripe and another showing 3 black stripes. It has a beautiful mottled look to it from the different colors of the indigo dyed woven threads, as well as light areas from age and wear. The piece could be considered 2-sided. Textile is soft from wear and washing; is in excellent condition. With no major damage that I can see: end are uneven but some stitching to prevent unraveling; one minor hole that I can see. I was lucky to have first choice of five large containers of indigos as they arrived from Africa. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the 14th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is apparent. The Niongo
Vintage Dogon,Mali Indigo Dyed Striped Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/38”x58"
Vintage. Handwoven cotton and indigo dyed African fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali. This piece is made of 13 indigo strips sewn together, with dark, light blue, and white stripes, and an interesting“mottled” look overall, due to fading, bleeding, and different dyed thread colors used in the weaving. 38" x 58" Textile is very soft from wear and washing. And is in very good condition with one small hole/area of loose weaving and some edge, end and corner wear. I had"first choice" of five large containers of indigos sent directly from Africa and was able to pick the ones in the best condition and those that are more unique and/or collectible. Almost all were in very good-excellent condition but I will note any flaws or problems with each one that I list. 566) gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)
Vintage Dogon,Mali Indigo Dyed Fabric/10 Hand Woven Cotton Strips/39”x58"
Vintage handwoven cotton and indigo dyed African fabric. Made by the Dogon in Mali. This piece was very hard to photograph and to show the full beauty of the work. It is made of 10 strips that were basically just dyed indigo, with no stitch dying or patterns. But there are variations in the color of the weaving thread. From dark, almost black blue and grey to regular, lighter indigo blue color in some places, and subtle lines/tiny stripes of the grey and dark color over most of the piece. Very simple but very nice! Piece is in excellent condition. And soft from wear and washing. Edges are unsewn. But no damage, holes, or opening of any of the seams. I had first choice from five containers of indigos as they arrived from Africa. And was able to pick the ones in the best condition. There are usually some small problems and imperfections with ... morethese vintage textiles and I will note any damage in my listings. The last large group I selected from contained many unusual designs that I and my African trader friend had never seen before, including mud cloth designs in indigo and Mali embroidered wedding pieces. 565) gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)
Dogon Talisman - Sun and Shell - Mali
Dogon Talisman- SUN and Shell- Mali Bronze. Shell. Cm. 6,3 x 3,7(2.48" x 1.45" Gr. 19,0(0.67 oz. Lost-wax casting. The mold is destroyed every time; every object is a unique piece. The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of Mali. South of the Niger bend near the city of Bandiagara in the Mopti region. Certain researchers investigating the Dogon have reported that they seem to possess advanced astronomical knowledge. From 1931 to 1956 the French anthropologist Marcel Griaule studied the Dogon. In late 1946 Griaule spent a consecutive thirty-three days in conversations with the Dogon wiseman Ogotemmêli. The source of much of Griaule and Dieterlen’s future publications(Dieu d’eau. Entretiens avec Ogotemmêli was published in 1948) They reported that the Dogon believe that the brightest star in the ... moresky, Sirius(sigi tolo or“star of the Sigui” has two companion stars, pō tolo(the Digitaria star) and ęmmę ya tolo, the female Sorghum star) respectively the first and second companions of Sirius A. Sirius, in the Dogon system, formed one of the foci for the orbit of a tiny star, the companionate Digitaria star. When Digitaria is closest to Sirius, that star brightens: when it is farthest from Sirius, it gives off a twinkling effect that suggests to the observer several stars. The orbit cycle takes 50 years. They also claimed that the Dogon appeared to know of the rings of Saturn, and the moons of Jupiter. The Dogon’s system reveals precise knowledge of cosmological facts only known by the development of modern astronomy. The problem of knowing how. With no instruments at their disposal, men could know the movements and certain characteristics of virtually invisible stars has not been settled. In 1976 Robert K. G. Temple wrote a book called“The Sirius Mystery” arguing that the Dogon’s information, if traced back to ancient Egyptian sources and myth, indicated an extraterrestrial transmission of knowledge of the stars. In fact, the Dogon also talk about Nommo– amphibian deities

The Dogon mythical beings and had served as a shrine piece. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not s

The Dogon of present day Mali live along the Bandiagara escarpment a range of cliffs approximately 120 miles long and in places up to one thousand feet high. As subsistence farmers they depend upon the food they produce to live storing it in granaries made of mud with thatched roofs ... moreand carved doors providing access to the foodstuffs held in the granary. Animals or of symbolic motifs were carved in relief onto the surface of the doors or on the doorlocks. The Dogon. A complex and spiritual people, have a blithering array of ritual art objects. Though they have been studied by scholars for many years, the use and naming of these artworks remains elusive. There are close to 100 different wooden masks, countless figural statuary sizes and forms, and innumerable smaller objects, from door locks, to metal castings, to jewelry, to items that defy meaningful classification. Most of these artworks are associated with the staggering number of Dogon ceremonies and festivals, which are mostly off-limits to outsiders. Recommended Reading: See Laude's DOGON. Dogon Mali West Africa Hand Woven, Hand Dyed Indigo: UNIQUE
This classic example of Dogon indigo cloth is more than 35 years old but is like new. It’s been carefully stored and never used. Excellent condition with no holes. Tears, or stains. You can even see remnants of wax used as part of the dying process. This cloth is 36” x 57” I brought this back with me after living in Mali from 1978 to 1980. I had some friends who lived in Dogon country. In the town of Bandiagara, some miles away from the escarpment(1500 ft. high cliffs where many Dogon live) We hitched rides to a number of Dogon villages. Hiking between them and camping out each night if there were no empty huts in the village or no village nearby. On one particular trip. I was able to barter for this piece from the woman who made it. After we finished. She offered us a meal of ground millet mush and boiled okra. It would have been rude to ... morerefuse but. well, think papier-mache paste covered with green slime. Let's just say it made the whole visit more memorable! Dogon women weave white cotton cloth. Sew the woven strips together, and then dye the cloth with indigo. Women also dye their lips. Gums, or palms with indigo. I’ve included some old photos that show Dogon women in the village wearing indigo cloth they made. These old photos are not included. Please feel free to email any questions. Thanks for looking.

Rare, Vintage, Burkina Faso,Dogon, Cast Bronze Bell/ Woman, Snake, Scorpion
Rare. Old, African cast bronze bell, 5 1/2" H, from Burkina Faso, I was told by the Dogon. Great sculpture of a woman sitting on the bell, with images of a scorpion, snake. And decorative circles on the bell sides. Details on the woman, who sits with her hands on her knees, has her wearing a necklace and bracelets, and shows as well as her braided hair in the back. Bell clapper inside makes a nice sound. Bronze casting has a long history in Africa. Going back to the 14th or 15th century, and culminating in the beautiful bronze wall plaques in Benin that record the images of the warriors that fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin. I was told by an African friend that the bell, and the other wonderful pieces in the collection I was recently able to buy, had various meanings for the individuals who owned them. They would have ... morebeen taken into the“society house” similar to a meeting place, church, shrine) and used for various rituals. The bells were often used in ceremonies conducted by a“healer” Someting about the scorpion, snake, and funny mouth of this woman lead me to suspect that she needed“healing” for something! The bell has a nice. Dark patina to it and is in excellent condition. The clapper is removable. I have seen no other similar ones on the internet. Watch for the other wonderful bronze works I bought and will list. gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)
