BACKGROUND Seventy-eight different types of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. All of them have large geometric eyes and stylized features. Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance is only understood by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask to a captivated audience. In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or hed

Dogon Kanaga Mask from Mali - 43 inches in height
This is fine old Malian Dogon Kanaga mask which has been in our home since 1991. It is 43 inches in height. 20 inches in width and I would estimate that it weighs 20 pounds. One of the rawhide cords is missing and replaced by string. Otherwise, it is in remarkably good condition. I am going to estimate the shipping at about $100. Should the shipper charge less. I will refund the difference. I would probably ask for buyer to pay the difference if it costs substantially more, but that would be voluntarily on buyers part.

BACKGROUND Seventy-eight ... moredifferent types of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. The head of the bobbin

Vintage African,Dogon Indigo Resist Dyed Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/43"x64"
Beautiful vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric. Made by the Dogon in Mali. Textiles are dyed with the resist, stitch dying technique and each piece is unique. All the ones I will be listing are hard to find. Older indigo pieces in very good conditon unless noted, with the old dyed patterns, and all were used and soft from wear and washing. This interesting piece has wonderful squares made with stitch dying and criss-cross patterns at the ends; 43” x 64” very good-excellent condition for its age. It has one section of a slightly different color blue and less squares. And a funny“patch” at one side, for a unique look to it. I was lucky to have“first choice” of two tubs of indigos. As they arrived directly from Africa, and have many that I will be selling. I picked ones that were in the best condition, and/or the most unique, ... morebut there are almost always a few flaws, which I will note in my listings and photographs. gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526)
Vintage Dogon,Mali Indigo Dyed Striped Fabric/Hand Woven Cotton Strips/42"x63"
Beautiful. Vintage handwoven cotton and indigo dyed African fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali. This piece is made of 12 strips sewn together; Each 3 1/2" strip is dark blue, light blue and white(which has an interesting mottled look from the indigo fading on it. 42" x 63" But not quite square and shorter(59" on the other side. Textile is a heaver weave and is very soft from wear and washing. It is basically in very good condition for its age and use. But there is a minor hole where two strips were sewn together, and a minor stain toward one edge- which could be expected from older pieces. I had"first choice" of a very large container of indigos and was able to pick the ones in the best condition of the many textiles sent from Africa. gsrx_vers_526(GS 6.6.6(526)
Pestle – Dogon people, Mali
Pestle– Dogon people. Mali Mortars and pestles are universal tools used to crush.Pound& crack ingredients such as; millet granary, herbs, nuts and spices into powders for culinary pastes. Often. Among the first sounds an infant in“Dogonland” hears is the sounds and rhythms of a pestle crushing grains. Condition: see photos) Measures approximately 63 inches tall x approximately 4 inches in diameter. Very hard wood and quite heavy! Aged patina in the center(oil from handling) And obvious signs of use from millet grain and contact within the mortar. One end is indexed(drilled) to accommodate a stand for display… Stand is not included. Note: Mali and areas of Burkina Faso(including West Africa) are again under siege from Islamic Extremists and terror groups. Including forms of Sharia Law, negatively impacting their already precarious way ... moreof life. This has a detriment to the preservation of their traditional masquerading and cultural heritage, as well as impacting the small, but limited authentic, exceptional and good ethnography- value and prices will justifiably increase. DOGON MALE LIMESTONE FIGURE – MALI
DOGON MALE LIMESTONE FIGURE– MALI The Dogon inhabit the Bandiagara cliffs. An extremely imposing setting in a very bare and austere environment. They are one of the very few existing ethnic groups to have remained the closest to their ancestral traditions both in artistic expression as well as in ceremonial practice. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in the fields at the edge of the cliffs, where water is scare. This is an intriguing Dogon stone"fetish" effigy figure hand-carved out of limestone. This figure possesses stylistic Tellem attributes and as a result may very well be a Dogon representation of a Tellem figure. This small expressive figure measures 4.75 inches long and 1.75 inches wide. The material. Limestone, gives this object a certain enigmatic quality. The last two photos are other examples ... moreof these Dogon figures.

This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. DOGON NOMMO METAL CONTAINER ON CAMELEON MALI #2435 - For African Art Gallery
DOGON NOMMO ON CAMELEON CONTAINER#2435 Tribe: Dogon Country: Mali. Material: Metal. Size: 11.5" 29.2 cm) Long. Item: 2435 Provenance: Ex James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) Condition: Used. Good.see images) This casting is of a Dogon nommo figure. The first Dogon primordial ancestors. Called Nommo, were bisexual water gods. They were created in heaven by the creator god Amma and descended from heaven to earth in an ark. The Nommo founded the eight Dogon lineages and introduced weaving, smithing, and agriculture to their human descendants. The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, ... moreand onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! DOGON KANAGA MASQUERADER FIGURE MALI #2417 - For African Art Gallery
DOGON NOMMO FIGURE#2416 Tribe: Dogon Country: Mali. Material: Metal. Size: 5.75" 14.6 cm) Tall. Item: 2416 Provenance: Ex James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) Condition: Used. Good.see images) This metal figure represents a Dogon Kanaga masquerader. The kanaga is topped by a short pole to which two parallel blades are fixed perpendicularly. Two small flat boards are placed at their ends. Upwards for the upper blade, downwards for the lower blade. The face of the mask is partly encircled by a crest of very stiff fibers, dyed either red or yellow. To the uninitiated. This mask evokes a bird spreading its wings. For those who have attained analogical knowledge through initiation, it is the symbol of man, axis of the world, pointing to both earth and sky. Another interpretation links kanaga to the water insect which, at the birth ... moreof the world implanted in the soil the first seed from which all other seeds and all human archetypes sprung. And the flat, crushed shape of the pole of kanaga evokes the fall of the first trouble-maker, Ogo, the pale fox. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! A type of musical instrument found in West Africa. This figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. This sculpture would hold a strong presence in a collection reflecting the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor. Known for their art as well as their remarkable villages along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. The figures may represent an ancestor or equally a Nommo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God.The figures were probably placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest’s shrine where they would have offerings made to infuse them with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. On this figure the offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. Recommended Reading: Griaule. DOGON RABBIT MASK AFRICAN INITIATION CEREMONY HORNS-Authentic
Ethnic Group: DOGON. Country of Origin: MALI. Materials: IRONWOOD Approximate Age: 50 + years. Dimensions: 13.0” x 7.0” x 5.5” Weight: 1 pound. Overall Condition: Used. EXCELLENT. Additional Information: This wood mask is modeled after the rabbit. Also called"dyommo. The rabbit is very popular to use as a fable animal, often used to teach a moral lesson. Traditionally, this mask would have been worn during"Dama, a commerative ritual for Dogon men. The Dogon people have created more than eighty mask types to represent characters in their cosmic myths. They are worn in large numbers in funeral dances. The Dogon use such dances to lead the homeless souls of the deceased to their final resting places in ... morethe world of spirit. Where they become part of the ancestor realm. Certain masks act out stories in addition to dancing. An example of this is the dyommo mask(rabbit) which performs with the dannana mask(hunter) The hunter pretends to hunt the several rabbit masks performing with him. He chases them; they flee in all directions, hiding among the spectators assembled in the village square. Posted with

Antique Rare African Tribal Dogon Cast Bronze Lion
Fine Mega Rare Antique African Tribal Benin Cast Bronze Lion This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is in excellent antique condition. From the private Collector. Material: Bronze Size: 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" Circa: 18th century Condition: Excellent Status: Private Collection. United States An outstanding piece of history. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified ... moreway, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understandi

There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elder’s house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. The figure has a man’s beard and a woman’s breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. This old carving would hold a prominent place in a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batuluki

Burkina Faso: Old & Rare Tribal used African Dogon mother with child.
Burkina Faso: Rare and old Tribal used African Dogon Figure. Height: 55 cm. AFRICA- GALLERY DOGON(DOGO. DOGOM, HABBE, HABE, KADO, KADDO, KIBISI, TOMBO) Mali. Burkina Faso The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely ... moreinterlinked and out of this arose principal cults. Which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture and art. The clans are subdivided onto lineages, overseen by the patriarch, guardian of the clan’s ancestral shrine and officiant at the totemic animal cult. Beside this hierarchical system of consanguinity, male and female associations are entrusted with the initiations that take place by age group. Corresponding to groups of newly circumcised or excised boys or girls. The Dogon believe these operations remove the female element from males and vice versa. Circumcision thus creates a wholly male or female person prepared to assume an adult role. The members of an age group owe one another assistance until the day they die. Initiation of boys begins after their circumcision, with the teaching of the myths annotated by drawings and paintings. The young boys will learn the place of humans in nature, society, and the universe. In the Dogon pantheon Amma appears as the original creator of all the forces of the universe and of his descendant Lebe. The god of plant rebirth. Thefirst Dogon primordial ancestors. Called Nommo, were bisexual water gods. They were create

The children hold the mother's breasts. The figure is made out of dense and heavy wood. This is a Dogon maternity figure. The veneration of motherhood and the promotion of fertility through statuary is an enduring theme found throughout most of West Africa. The Dogon are no exception. Though maternity figures are not as numerous as those from groups in the Congo and other countries. The dignity and overall proportions of our figure are magical. The face is proud and dignified, with an exquisite profile. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom.
