This auction is for an authentic antique figural African Art bronze statue from the Dogon Tribe in Mali. The bronze is of a tribesman carrying what I ... morebelieve is a snake in his right hand. The man appears to be an elder. As he has a long beard. The bronze has absolutely amazing patina and has started to green in places. This piece was found in an estate auction in which the man had hundreds of pieces of African art, all museum quality! This bronze also includes a specially made stand which fits around the man's abdomen and his feet rest on a 1 inch black painted wood block for 360 degree viewing! The bronze(without the stand) is approximately 8 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The stand adds about 1 inch to the total height. The Dogon Tribe: The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of the country of Mali. In the West of the Continent of Africa, south of the Niger bend. The population numbers between 400.000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions. Their mask dances, wooden sculpture(making the bronze more rare! and their architecture. Dogon art is primarily sculpture. Dogon art revolves around religious values. Ideals, and freedoms. Dogon sculptures are not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of families, sanctuaries, or kept with the Hogon. The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. Themes found throughout Dogon sculpture consist of figures with raised arms. Superimposed bearded figures. Horsemen, stools with caryatids, women with children, figures covering their faces, women grinding pearl millet, women bearing vessels on their heads, donkeys bearing cups, musicians, dogs, quadruped-shaped troughs or benches, figures bending from the waist, mirror-images, aproned figures. And standing figures. Signs of other contacts and origins are evident in Dogon art. The Dogon people were not the first inhabitants of the cliffs of Bandiaga

Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piec

There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elder’s house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. The figure has a man’s beard and a woman’s breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. This old carving would hold a prominent place in a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batuluki

The Weaver uses his feet alternately to operate the heddle pulleys which are always used in pair. Heddle pulleys have become real pieces of art which are found in museums and collections around the world for they are decorated with carved head. Human forms(like this example) and animal forms. In most of the case these decorations recall masks, figures seen as spirits who are supposed to protect the weaver and help him produce good quality of textiles. The present heddle pulley is from the Dogon of Mali. It is surmounted by a figure with male and female features(beard-breast) This figure is a miniature of a classic Dogon figure which is identified as an ancestor. Repair: significant wear on the surface. Chips, Additional Information: This very unique and offering covered figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. The standing ... morefigure with the vertical wig-like extensions rising from the head is not a common characterization in the imagery found in Dogon sculpture. However. This sculpture would hold a strong presence in a collection reflecting the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor. Known for their art as well as their remarkable villages along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. The standing figure most probably portraying a being known as a Tellem. An ancient spirit that the Dogon venerate to bring rain to their dry land acting as intermediaries to deities for rain. The figures may represent an ancestor or equally a Nummo, one of the eight primordial figures created by God.The figures were placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest’s shrine where they would have offerings made to infuse them with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. On this figure the offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. Recommended Reading: Griaule. Old Dogon Wood Fetish Divination Figure of White Fox Mali Africa
Old Dogon Wood Fetish Divination Figure of White Fox Mali Africa An old and used Dogon wood divination figure representing the white fox. Carved out of a lightweight wood. The style of execution is very naive yet naturalistic. This piece was used extensively in divination; figural representations of human beings would be included. As these would represent the person for whom the divination was being carried out for together with other persons involved. Divination consulting the white fox is exclusive to the region of Sanga in the Dogon Cliffs. Diviners would draw a large rectangle on the sand. Which in turn, would be divided into numerous squares, or compartments. The person who consults the diviner, as well as the people and situations that would be of concern to him, are represented: are represented by wood figures, the home would be symbolized ... moreby a mound of sand, the family would be represented by a circle, etc. The wood figures are placed into context in the compartmentalized rectangle. And the diviners scatter peanuts into the divination area at dusk. If the white fox has come to eat the peanuts by sunrise, the diviners would be able to pronounce the divination, as the traces and footsteps left by the fox would be interpreted the them; fallen, standing or regrouped wood figures, as well as their location near the home, family, etc. would also be significant. The small wooden fox is consulted by the diviner to seek the answers to the questions that the person consulting him may have; the outcome of the divination, is usually pronounced by the diviner, the following morning. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This sculpture reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. West of the Dogon heartland the Dogon interact with the other major art producing people of Mali, the Bamana(Bambara) These figures show the influence of the Mande speaking Bamana(the Dogon are Gur language speakers – different language, different cultures! in sculptural attributes well defined. ►SUPERB OLD DOGON MASK w/ NOMMO SUPERSTRUCTURE ►24" TALL ~ African Art (Mali)
For further details, please visit the item description at our Website(click on the image above) Superb Old Dogon Mask with Nommo Superstructure(Mali) Description: On offer from our personal collection is this distinctive old face mask from the Dogon peoples of Mali. One of our first acquisitions of ethnographic art. We were fortunate to acquire this piece in the early 1970s from private collectors/dealers who left their native Africa to journey to the U.S. to exhibit the remarkable tribal antiquities field-collected by their father, who had remained in Africa. We believe this piece dates back to the 1940s or'50s. With its thin-walled construction. This well-carved mask is tall, rather slender, exhibits classic features. Incised scarifications create multiple patterns across the face, as well as on the torso& arms of the nommo superstructure ... moreperched atop the mask. Set in under the brow, open triangles form the eyes of the mask, while the nose takes on the traditional'arrow' shape used by the Dogon in much of their carvings, not least of which is the nommo figure that adorns this piece. Zoomorphic ears frame the upper brow of the mask's face. The powerful, crouching nommo superstructure bears hermaphroditic characteristics with its breasts& bearded face. Attachment holes perforate the side-rims of the piece. With a fine. Well-developed patina, the mask shows age- use-related wear. Despite some imperfections in the wood, including old insect damage(arrested) scrapes& abrasions, dry age-cracks, a few old chips(including those along the bottom& back rims) the mask is in good overall condition. A small area to the left on the mask's upper brow has worn through, forming a small, irregular hole. At just over 24-inches in height, this imposing piece makes a powerful, compelling display, would be an exce

Superb DOGON LION MASK MALI #2081 ~ For African Art Gallery
DOGON LION MASK#2081 Tribe: Dogon. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Size: 13.5" 34.3 cm) Tall. Item: 2081 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection. Florida, USA) There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. And for the most part they all utilize the use of various geometric shapes in their design, independent of the various animals they are supposed to represent. Most masks have large geometric eyes and stylized features and are often painted or colored with various substances. The Dogon continue an ancient masquerading tradition called"Dama" which commemorates the origin of death. Dama memorial ceremonies are held to accompany the dead into the ancestral realm and restore order to the universe. In these ceremonies there are a large number of performers, often a few hundred, and it is considered absolutely ... morenecessary to the ceremony. In the case of the dama, the timing, types of masks involved, and other ritual elements are often specific to one or two villages and may not resemble those seen in locations only several miles distant. The masks also appear during baga-bundo rites performed by small numbers of masqueraders before the burial of a male Dogon. The better known Kanaga and sirige masks are followed in the dama ceremony by masks that evoke the behavior of some of the animals that inhabit the regions where the Dogon live and hunt. They include among others- antelopes. Hares, lions, hyenas, cows, birds and monkeys. The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. African Tribal Rare Dogon Antique Cast Bronze Scorpion ring
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Cast Bronze Gold weight. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing a Scorpion ring. The item is about 1 1/4" high. Size 9"9 14" in excellent antique condition. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing ... moreit to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understanding to the initiat

In dogon society. Horses were generally considered a luxury reserved for rich or powerful people. Horses occur in dogon beliefs about the creation of the world and the horse and rider figures are seen as a symbol of a mythological personage: the seventh Nommo. According to dogon history the Nommo, of which there are eight, are the forefathers of the ... moreentire dogon race. After the sacrifice of the fifth Nommo and the scattering of his dismembered body across the earth, the seventh Nommo descended from the heavens. This was the blacksmith, who brought to earth the ancestors of human beings, animals, grains and technology. Upon landing the rider, the seventh Nommo disembarked from the ark on horseback. It is believed that the horse was the very first animal to inhabitate the earth. Hence the horse motif is found throughout dogon art. Representation of mythical beings, Nommo, and used as a shrine piece. The oral tradition of the Dogon ... moretells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu prie

This sculpture would hold a strong presence in a collection reflecting the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor. Known for their art as well as their remarkable villages along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. The figures may represent an ancestor or equally a Nummo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God.The figures were probably placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest’s shrine where they would have offerings made to infuse them with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. On this figure the offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. Recommended Reading: Griaule. Dogon Stool, Mali, Burkina Faso, African Tribal Creations, art door, chair nommo
An African Tribal Creations gallery Dogon Nommo Stool The Dogon are a people numbering near the 400.000 mark in the Mali and Burkina Faso region. Well known for their intricately carved doors, they settled the region of their inhabitance after fleeing persecution of their indigenous religious beliefs from the invading Muslims population to the north. Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. This beautiful stool is finely adorned and detailed. And was collected ... morefrom the Mali region of the Dogon's native territory. The figures present on them are believed to have spiritual power, and are intended to protect the contents of the room and its owner. This stool features a great number of Nommo figures, protective figures representative of the earliest ancestors in Dogon mythology. They are said to have been bisexual water gods, created by the ultimate god Amma, and sent to Earth in an ark, where they then founded the Dogon family lineages and introduced various activities, such as smithing, farming, etc. The stool is in good condition, displaying the normal age and wear-related rub marks, scratches, etc. It's upper surface is decorated with a finely hand hammered sheet of metal. It also bears a faded and worn greenish pigment on much of its surface. A very nice and uncommon piece ready to be added to your collection! Dimensions are 16.5" tall x 8" in diameter. Nommo are mythic ancestors to whom prayers are made to insure the well-being of the community. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali. Art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. As with almost all Dogon art, its true meaning is shrouded in myth, an intuitive part of the Dogon soul. The Nommo are an integral part of Dogon mythology. The god Ammo mated with the earth, and gave birth to a pair of Nommo, bisexual beings, some predominantly male, some female. A ritual device such as this shrine piece is kept in the lineage elder’s house and is used during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. The Dogon. Numbering about 250,000, are one of most remarkable cultures in the world. After many centuries of cultural isolation, Dogon art remains remarkably unaffected. They have become, therefore, a laboratory of sorts for ethnologists.

Dogon figures depicting horses and riders reflect the prestige and power surrounding an animal that has been associated with royalty since horses were introduced to West Africa more than a thousand years ago. Dogon equestrian figures are most often identified as images of the HOGON, since in Dogon society horses are a luxury generally reserved for rich an powerful people. Horses appear in Dogon mythology about the creation of the world, and the horse has been interpreted as a blacksmith who represents NOMMO, or other mythological beings. According to DOGON CLIFF DWELLERS, by Imperato(which I am selling on eBay) the horse was the first animal to leave the ark, in Dogon mythology, and symbolize chieftainship, power, and wealth. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 65035* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct

Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Centre Mali African
Title, Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Centre Mali African Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 9 inches H. x 6.25 inches W. Overall Condition, poor, Damage/Repair, large cracks in seat and in base. Chips in places, A Dogon stool with cylindrical seat and base. The center is decorated with figural"three pillars decorated with carved figures. This stool was also used as a shrine piece. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders ... moreon horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. 69187* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct In

Antique primitive African Dogon Mali? House guider post? with face on top
I found this at an estate sale. The man I bought it from said that it had belonged to his grandparents who were missionaries in Africa in the fifties. True or not I don't know. It does look very old. The man said he thought it had belonged to a medicine man. After research on internet I believe it may be a Dogon Guider post for houses in Africa. Ther is a hole in the bottom rounded part that could have been where it was mounted. There is a face on both sides and it is 14 1/2 inches long. Please check out my other items as they came from the same estate sale. Thanks for looking and happy bidding. Posted with

Damage/Repair, large cracksin face. Abdomen, and base, child legs with splits in knees, holes, scrubbed patina, Provenance: from an old Oregon Collection. Additional Information: ... moreDogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well used figure with her arms wrapped around the child projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the standing mother holding a child are commonly called maternity figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure held within the female s arms is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the mother representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among some of the finest art produced in West Africa and the obvious quality of this carving is impressive. I have examined this piece and agree with the
