Ex- Belgian African art collection . African mask with a heart-shaped face surrounded by wide bands of contrasting colors, made from red bark and kaolin, ... morewhich could evoke the traditional scarifications of the clan. Matt patina. The Tetela and Yela groups are of Mongo masks origin and are neighbors. The masks of the Tetela masks takes on various forms, borrowed from the clans they rub shoulders with, including Songye inspirations with polychrome works. Several ethnic groups divided into lineages live closely intertwined in central Zaire: the Mbole, the Yela, the Lengola, and the Metoko, and have similar associations. This proximity has generated certain stylistic borrowings. Their artistic production indeed presents great analogies with that of the Metoko and the Lengola.

Paint, Approximate ... moreAge, 20th Century last quarter, Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A 20th century mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended

Rubber, Approximate Age, 20th Century/ second half Dimensions, 14 inches H. x 7.25 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. In some cases they would be real animal teeth. The dark patina adds to the dramatic haracter of this mask. Early researchers identified over seventy different types of masks that would appear danced by members of the men’s Awa Society performing primarily during the Dama funerary ceremonies. This mask could be identified as a the Hunter(see a close similar mask in Ladislas Segy boo: Mask of Black Africa. Fig. 21) It would be worn by a member of the Awa society. The hunter would have participated in a mime during a funeral with the rabbit(who was a trickster) This mask has holes at the sides to allow a piece of wood to be pushed through so that the dancer would bite down on the stick to control the mask. The bar is replaced here by rubber. Such masks were stored or trashed in rock shelters when it was thought that they had outlived their usefulness or simply were replaced by a new mask. The"walu. or antelope, is one of the best-known of their many remarkable masks. One reason for its notoriety is that the Dogon occasionally stage public dances wearing the walu. These strikingly abstract masks represent the antelope, an animal venerated for its beauty and strength. Animated dancers pound the earth with sticks to mimic the antelope pawing the ground. Though most Dogon masks are for funerary use, on occasion they will be danced for other reasons. To say the Dogon are one of the world's most fascinating cultures is an understatement. The more we learn. The more remarkable they seem. Their arts reflect a purity of style rarely encountered in modern Africa. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. Dogon Kanaga Mask from Mali - 43 inches in height
This is fine old Malian Dogon Kanaga mask which has been in our home since 1991. It is 43 inches in height. 20 inches in width and I would estimate that it weighs 20 pounds. One of the rawhide cords is missing and replaced by string. Otherwise, it is in remarkably good condition. I am going to estimate the shipping at about $100. Should the shipper charge less. I will refund the difference. I would probably ask for buyer to pay the difference if it costs substantially more, but that would be voluntarily on buyers part.

DOGON RABBIT MASK AFRICAN INITIATION CEREMONY HORNS-Authentic
Ethnic Group: DOGON. Country of Origin: MALI. Materials: IRONWOOD Approximate Age: 50 + years. Dimensions: 13.0” x 7.0” x 5.5” Weight: 1 pound. Overall Condition: Used. EXCELLENT. Additional Information: This wood mask is modeled after the rabbit. Also called"dyommo. The rabbit is very popular to use as a fable animal, often used to teach a moral lesson. In many places, the rabbit in stories takes on the role of the jester, who has his fun with larger animals and gets away unharmed. Traditionally, this mask would have been worn during"Dama, a commerative ritual for Dogon men. The Dogon people have created more than eighty mask types to represent characters in their cosmic myths. They are worn in large numbers in funeral dances. The Dogon use such dances to lead the homeless souls of the deceased to their final resting places in ... morethe world of spirit. Where they become part of the ancestor realm. Certain masks act out stories in addition to dancing. An example of this is the dyommo mask(rabbit) which performs with the dannana mask(hunter) The hunter pretends to hunt the several rabbit masks performing with him. He chases them; they flee in all directions, hiding among the spectators assembled in the village square. Posted with

DOGOM, HABBE, HABE, KADO, KADDO, KIBISI, TOMBO) Mali. Burkina Faso The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, ... moretheir carvings. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of this arose principal cults. Which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture and art. The clans are subdivided onto lineages, overseen by the patriarch, guardian of the clan’s ancestral shrine and officiant at the totemic animal cult. Beside this hierarchical system of consanguinity, male and female associations are entrusted with the initiations that take place by age group, corresponding to groups of newly circumcised or excised boys or girls. The Dogon believe these operations remove the female element from males and vice versa. Circumcision thus creates a wholly male or female person prepared to assume an adult role. The members of an age group owe one another assistance until the day they die. Initiation of boys begins after their circumcision, with the teaching of the myths annotated by drawings and paintings. The young boys will learn the place of humans in nature, society, and the universe. In the Dogon pantheon Amma appears as the original creator of all the forces of the universe and of his descendant Lebe. The god of plant rebirth. Thefirst Dogon primordial ance

Magnificent Ancient Dogon Ancestor Mask Mali African Art Museum Quality
Dogon Ancestor Mask Mali Africa 31 inches tall X 8 inches wide X 6 inches deep Heavy old dry petrified wood Age: Unknown 100 + years Massive old mask is almost petrified and is a one of a kind piece. This piece is almost eerie which only adds to its mystique The Dogon. A complex and spiritual people, have a blithering array of ritual art objects. Though they have been studied by scholars for many years, the usage and naming of these artworks remains elusive. There are close to 100 different wooden masks, countless figural statuary sizes and forms, and innumerable smaller objects, from door locks to metal castings to jewelry to items that defy meaningful classification. Most of these artworks are associated with the staggering number of Dogon ceremonies and festivals, which are mostly off-limits to outsiders. The foundation of these ceremonies, ... morefrom agricultural rites, to initiations to funerals and beyond, lies in the many myths absorbed by the Dogon. Location: Mali during their ancient flight from northern Africa. Perhaps Egypt, to their present location along the Bandiagara escarpment. The Dogon also have a powerful attachment to the natural world-from rocks to plants to the animals of the bush. More art-more mystery. Their creation myth revolves around a creator god named"Ammo" and his four pairs of offspring known as"nommo. Figural representations of the primordial pairs show up in artworks produced for virtually every Dogon ritual setting. There are names for some masks, mostly abstract and stylized, like the"kanaga, and"satimbe, and also many with totem animals associated with them, but the origin of the names is unknown, as is almost everything about Dogon art. Volumes have been written, but alas most is only scholarly speculation. The most well-known artworks of the Dogon are their ceremonial masks. Of which there are perhaps 100. A few of them have names, but it is somewhat doubtful that these are Dogon names. It is more likely, since the Dogon are secretive about actual meanings

African Tribal Art-Fearsome Dogon Hand Carved Mask-Cowrie Adorned-Mali
This hand carved interesting mask was collected in the Côte D'Ivoire in West Africa around 1955 by our father. Who was then a pilot for a major oil exploration company. He said it came from Mali, from the Dogon tribe. The mask is about 22” tall and 6” at the widest. It has three long spikes and two short ones. The short ones having a hole in the top for an unknown purpose. There are two eyes and ears. The mask is ornamented with rows of cowrie shells. An early form of African money. The shells are firmly cemented on with some type of dark substance, possibly some form of a dung mixture. It is quite hard and odorless. This same substance has been used to fill cavities in the wood, as you can see in our photos. Of the many shells used. I find that about 8 are missing. There are holes drilled around the edges of the mask. These were ... morenot for securing the mask to the head, but for mounting material such as dried grasses to make the mask appear larger. There is a crack in the back, at the top of the head. Does not appear on the front of the mask. AUTHENTIC AFRICAN TRIBAL ART DOGON MASK (Mali) bought in Liberia 1982
When I visited Mali in 1980. Obtaining a license to export any traditional art objects out of the country, was next to impossible. I worked at the time in Liberia where Mandinka traders often brought to my house various items of tribal art for sale, but never a Dogon mask. Finally, in 1982 I bought from them this mask and 2 figures(listed separately) The mask is very heavy and, according to the Mandinka traders, was attached to a staff and decorated with braids made of some animal fur(that would explain, some bits of hair still stuck to the mask- see photos) During a ceremony a dancer would carry the mask on the staff so that it would tower high above the other dancers. I bought the mask because I liked the geometric shapes and stylized features. Characteristic of Malian art cubist forms. During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started ... morecollecting African art, both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Zaire(now Democratic Republic of Congo) I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All the items which I am selling now on Ebay were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficult to ascertain. The members of the tribe which use the masks in rituals attribute to them magical powers and are highly unlikely to sell them. Most of such items on the market were most likely obtained by theft. I have only one mask that I received directly from the tribe and that was after I was invited by one of my coworkers to witness a funeral ceremony. Dimensions: 16" long. 6 ½" wide, 7" deep. It weighs 4 lb 13 oz. Please do not hesitate to ask for additional information about the item or a different shipping method. If you are interested in African art please check my other listings current and future. I will co

Please ask me about any specific questions or concerns. Thanks for looking and good luck. Please read my shipping statement(third paragraph below) If I have misstated anything it is due to ignorance and not intent. Most all of the items I sell are vintage. As such most have lived very long eventful lives and as such will not look brand new. Unless I state items are"NEW or MINT" there is bound to be some amount of wear and aging. Thank you for considering this item I am selling ... moretoday. I have been selling antiques for more than 30 years; however. That does not qualify me as an expert on all of the items I sell. I know more about some antiques than I do about others. I ask questions and research items as much as possible. On some items I only claim to know enough to write up a simple description of the item. I am a pretty good photographer, and I always try to get a good shot of specific and overall condition and of the signatures et cetera, so take a good look at all the photographs, after all, isn’t a picture worth a thousand words? I make every effort to describe my items as clearly and accurately as possible, but I want you to be aware that vintage items do have flaws, and wear that one expects to see on old or vintage items. These flaws, wear, or even damage are sometimes difficult to see and difficult to describe in an ebay ad. If I see the problem, I assure you that I will describe the damage and if possible include a photo of that problem. I often list items that you as a collector are more familiar with than I am as a dealer, therefore you may know about possible problems and what to look for, that I may have overlooked. Dogon Monkey Mask Dege Mali African SALE Was $750
Title, Dogon Monkey Mask Dege Mask, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 15 inches H. x 8 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, chips. Scratches, stains, marking in the back Additional Information: A Dogon mask with an abstract face characterized by large open square mouth and large ears. The forehead is domed and shadowed the square pierced eyes. The nose stylized as well as the mouth. This mask is a representation of a so-called Dege or black monkey mask. The Dege or Black Monkey masks of the Dogon fall into a category that is defined as predatory masks in that they are predators of human crops and animals though human-like in form exhibit the reverse of desired human behavior. When funerary ceremonies take place the Dege mask ... moresits at the side making lewd and sexual gestures reflecting the reversal of proper Dogon conduct. Monkeys are thought to be gluttons. Irrational and unpredictable in their actions, all the reverse of what is considered normative and acceptable human demeanor. They provide the anti-esthetic and anti-humanistic mirror to human behavior that is to be shunned or corrected. Dege represents the dark forces of sorcery and are to be feared. This is a powerful carving with an interesting sense of design and execution. It would be well placed in any collection. See a close similar example in Francine Ndiaye. L'art du pays Dogon. Dans les collections du Musee de l'Homme 1995 Museum Rietberg Zurich, fig.37, p.59. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 68726* All content. Dogon crocodile mask with female figure Mali Bamana Bambara- no reserve
The Dogon people inhabit the large Bandiagara plateau. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate. The Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Over seventy anthropomorphic and zoomorphic mask types have been recorded among the Dogon. The masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance in many cases is understood only by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask. The crocodile mask was worn by dancers during ceremonies that protected the people from the malevolent influences of slain crocodiles. Dogon Cast Brass / Bronze Mask Mali African
Title, Dogon Cast Brass/ Bronze Mask Mali African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Brass or bronze, Approximate Age, unknown, Dimensions, 7.75 inches H. x 6.25 inches W. x 3 inches d. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, some wear in places, Additional Information: A well cast brass or bronze face mask with with a finial oval face. Long finial nose, half-closed eyelids and open mouth. The surface shows some oxidation. This mask does indicate the skill of the blacksmith in casting a mask out of a medium much more difficult to work than wood. There have been a number of metal mask-like sculptures from the Bamana of Mali. There is long tradition of figurative iron. Bronze and brass casting in the Western Sudan reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12 th century. The ... moreage of this interestingly brass mask is undetermined but it does reflect an earlier period of bronze or brass casting. The facial features on this mask are similar to those found on wood sculptures from the Bamana. These masks are forged by blacksmiths working them into shapes that could be worn. Simply carried, or kept in a ritual location. Today there is no active tradition of these masks being used. In fact as little is known aboutcast metal masks among the Baule, Bamana, Dogon, Senufo or any other Western Sudanic groups it would be conjecture to assert more than this at this time. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 83948* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! BACKGROUND Seventy-eight ... moredifferent types of mask have been identified by the French scholar Marcel Griaule. All of them have large geometric eyes and stylized features. Dogon masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance is only understood by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask to a captivated audience. In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobb

Hemba Ibombo mask masque Tribal africa congo dogon yoruba songye fang kota lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer.
