Exquisite African Art - Dogon Omono White Monkey Mask Used in Tribal Film
Exquisite African Art- Dogon Omono White Monkey Mask Used in Tribal Film Dogon Omono White Monkey Mask Tribe: Dogon Origin: Mali Materials: Wood Dimensions cm: 55 Tall x 16 Wide Approx Age: Mid- Later 20th Century This beautifully carved Dogon Omono Mask“white monkey Mask” is a bit of a film star! It was used in the re-make of a 1950′s tribal film“statues also die” which the film producer“Duncan Campbell” successfully filmed. I don’t think this lovely mask will earn its own star on the Hollywood’s walk of fame but will definitely steal someones heart as it is so lovely! A later 20th century piece covered in red. Black and white spots. The lower of the mask has had some damage to the 2 sides up from where the bite stick holes were and has split up, and some old insect damage which is long gone. The monkey itself has 2 faint hairline cracks ... moreon the body and a chip of wood missing on the chin. According to Dogon beliefs. The monkey represents wild, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior– the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding tribes person is expected to behave. The Dogon utilize three types of monkey masks which are identified solely by their color rather than their shape. Dege is known as the black monkey, while the white monkey is known as Omono, and the red monkey is called Ko. The white monkey mask. Omono, composed of a face mask crowned by the head& bust of a monkey. The white monkey masker dances in the dance sequence to the fast dege rhythm. His dance is similar to that of the rabbit, consists of hopping from leg to leg while crossing one leg diagonally in front of the other. The man who wears the mask leans on a stick& sits apart from the crowd in a melancholy attitude, but he is encouraged to dance by the singers who chant: Monkey on a high tree, all eyes are on you, the drum is beating for you, move your head, move your legs, all the people have their eyes on you. There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. And for the most part they all util

This is a mask from the Dogon people The use of masks with human figures and other superstructures on top is more common among the Dogon. The figure on the top is known as a Dyongu Seru(also Dyougou Serou) with its face hiden by its hands. This gesture means" to be ashamed" It is related to the myth of Dyongu Seru. The first man created by god Amma. According to Dogon oral traditions, this first man committed incest with his own mother who was the earth. Dyongu Seru is sculpted hiding his face in his hands in shame for his misdeed. This gesture is also explained by the fact after the famine that devastated their region the founders were obliged to leave the region, because they could not feed their children. They were ashamed after all. This traditional mask dances during the Dama funeral rites. During the Sigi ceremony organized every sixty years to celebrate the spirits of dead. The mask was extensively used and seems old. Oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Burkina Faso: Tribal used Bronze Dogon mask with a bird. Height: 17 cm. AFRICA-art-GALLERY DOGON(DOGO. DOGOM, HABBE, HABE, KADO, KADDO, KIBISI, TOMBO) Mali. Burkina Faso The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely ... moreinterlinked and out of this arose principal cults. Which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture and art. The clans are subdivided onto lineages, overseen by the patriarch, guardian of the clan’s ancestral shrine and officiant at the totemic animal cult. Beside this hierarchical system of consanguinity, male and female associations are entrusted with the initiations that take place by age group. Corresponding to groups of newly circumcised or excised boys or girls. The Dogon believe these operations remove the female element from males and vice versa. Circumcision thus creates a wholly male or female person prepared to assume an adult role. The members of an age group owe one another assistance until the day they die. Initiation of boys begins after their circumcision, with the teaching of the myths annotated by drawings and paintings. The young boys will learn the place of humans in nature, society, and the universe. In the Dogon pantheon Amma appears as the original creator of all the forces of the universe and of his descendant Lebe. The god of plant rebirth. Thefirst Dogon primordial ancestors. Called Nommo, were bisexual water gods. They were created

One of the most popular types of masks in the Sanga region is the type known as kanaga. Like other Dogon masks. Kanaga masks are worn at rituals called dama, whose goal is to transport the souls of deceased family members away from the village and to enhance the prestige of the deceased and his descendants by magnificent masked performances and generous displays of hospitality. In 1935, French anthropologist Marcel Griaule witnessed a dama ritual in which twenty-nine out of a total of seventy-four masks were of the kanaga type. These masks are characterized by a wooden superstructure in the form of a double-barred cross with short vertical elements projecting from the tips of each horizontal bar. met Below are some videos showing the history and dance of the Kanaga- See some great pictures and a superb description by'Rand

Uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior which is the direct opposite of the Dogon people's beliefs about the way a good person is expected ... moreto behave. The Dogon utilize three types of monkey masks Dege is the black monkey. While the white monkey is known as Omono, and the red monkey is called Ko. It most likely symbolizes something or someone in simple human form, connected to the Dogon creation myth, or perhaps to their brief association with the ancient Tellem people in the 16th century. It has also been described as a crocodile or a bird known as the"kommolo tebu. It is one of the few masks that the Dogon have allowed outsiders to photograph, and it remains an icon of African Art. The most familiar artworks of the Dogon are their ceremonial masks. Of which there are perhaps 100. A few of them have names, but it is doubtful that all of these are Dogon names. It is more likely, since the Dogon are secretive about actual meanings, that most are European. 93563* All content. Including pictures, Cop
