Great design! Stylized Aso dogs that form a really knarly and interesting pattern. Typical of Dayak art. There are at least 200 trade beads attached to it for decoration and 4 flat disc shell buttons on each side of the beadwork. The back is mid-century old cotton trade fabric. Remember that they were still Headhunters in the sixties! This is a used. Authentic baby carrier. The beadwork in 70 to 80 years old and difficult to find now days, and comparable examples are expensive in Indonesia. The Dayak will sell the beadwork separately because believe that to be the most valuable part of the artifact. Antique DAYAK Hampatong- guardian statue- Oceanic
The Dayak peoples of Southeastern Borneo create a variety of wooden figures collectively known as Hempatong. They are believed to protect a village by warding off evil spirits especially those believed to bring disease. The wood used for a Hampatong is not chosen in a traditional sense. The wood has a spirit and it must be"willing and agree" to become a Hampatong. Only after a process of traditional ceremonies is it created. When completed it is used as a protective Magic. Hampatong are found in the field and within the village. When placed among rice crops a hampatong is thought to enhance fertility and ensure a bountiful harvest. Others were carved specifically for protection and placed throughout villages especially near doorways. And along well-traveled paths. This was from a collection that sourced out of Borneo in the 1980's. ... moreThe exact age of the piece is unknown. Ironwood is used because it is so dense that it will last for 2 hundred years even in the tropical rain forests. It has been out of the rainforest for over 30 years so the erosion and damage was done before then. The white and green discoloration are from the remains of mud dried lichen that once grew on it while it was in situ. Notice the notches for the missing arms and penis. The glass beads used for eyes. There is also a wooden fetish attached. Size: 31" x 4" x 4" I am starting at a low reserve.

Authentic Antique Dayak Ceremonial Pictorial Carved Hardwood Paddle
This is an unusual authentic antique Dayak ceremonial paddle. Carved from a dark hardwood. There are scenes carved on the wide section of the paddle. On one side. There is a man who appears to be wrestling a snake, while a Rhinoceros Hornbill bird is perched on his head. I do know the Rhinoceros Hornbill has a special meaning to the Dayak people. Another snake is watching the struggle from a tree. On the other side. There is a large man holding a smaller struggling man over his head, now there is a large vessel in front of them. The carving is in relief. With textures for depth. The wood has a smooth worn surface with nice patina. The paddle is 48" long and 3 1/2" at its widest. Looking at the piece with a 10x loop. Dayak Headhunter Bow This heavy hardwood bow was made out of a light colored palmwood. There is a simple feather ornament near one end and woven ratan covering near each end. The ends are tapered and notched for string. But the string is not present. The bow is in excellent condition with no cracks. There is a small area that looks like it has a water stain? The bow has a small tag that says it is from the Bali area and says that it is part of a Dayak head hunting set. I think this tag is in error. The Dayak are headhunters who live in south central Borneo. Length = 185 cm; Weight = 424 gm This artifact is from the estate of Dain Torguson. Dayak Mandau Sword w/ original Scabbard. Antique 19th Century Sword is 24-1/2" long. Scabbard is 28" long. Rare piece from Borneo. Deer antler horn. Intricately carved handle. Fine metal braiding over base of handle. Original beaded band on end of scabbard, will not take plastic off as there are some loose beads. Scabbard(sheath) holds sword in place but there is some damage to the bottom seam and you can see some metal from the blade when sword is in scabbard. 19th CENTURY BORNEO DAYAK MANDAU PARANG HEADHUNTER SWORD WITH PISO RAUT KNIFE
Offered for bids is a rare set of WELL AGED 19TH CENTURY BORNEO DAYAK PARANG MANDAU HEADHUNTER SWORD WHICH I ACQUIRED FROM A REPUTABLE ANTIQUE SWORD DEALER IN PORTUGAL. Both the sheath and decorations have see use as seen in the PICS. Ornate antique wood with rattan bindings. Comes with the companion knife beaded sheath and the Piso Raut companion knife is included. The sword measures a bit under 25 inches long and the blade is 20 inches long and 1/4 inch thick at the tang. The blade is hand forged with minor pitting and blackened with age, which is expected in a 19th century Mandau.The handle is decorated carved wood with remnant hair tuft. Blade is solid in the wooden handle, as expected flat in one side and convex in the other. Hole decorations on the blade. The rattan handle binding is tight. The Piso Raut companion knife has a warrior ... morecarved in the handle and measures 21.25 inches long with a 4.75 inch long blade. Selling this vintage hardwood garamut(drum) beater that was obtained while traveling in Borneo many years ago. This beater is dual purpose being capable of beating a drum and also creating a rattle sound with the round ball in the handle. I am still amazed how the artist who created this piece was able to do such a fine job in enclosing the ball within the legs of the stand that the ancestor figure is seated upon. The patina. The Dayak tribe from the Borneo islands in Indonesia carve designs into skulls of their headhunted victims and insert wooden figures. The Dayak. Ifugao and Naga human skulls are headhunter’s trophies. The Asmat, Vanuatu and Palawan human skulls are considered“Ancestor” skulls. The difference is; head hunted skulls are acquired from enemy victims. Ancestor skulls are collected and venerated to remember deceased family members. The Ifugao collect bones of dead relatives wrap them in tribal textures and store them in the rafters under their huts. Human skulls and skull caps from Nepal are ritual offertory vessels that are used as drinking cups in Tibetan Buddhist ceremonies. T he mandau is the traditional weapon of the Dayak of Kalimantan. Indonesia. The majority of the native people living in the island of Kalimantan(Indonesian Borneo) the Dayak, were fierce headhunters whose tribal art, including wood carving, architecture, beadwork and extraordinary trophy skulls. The mandau was imbued with magical properties and was believed to grow more powerful as it absorbed the courage and strength of each victim as it was passed through the generations. This made it a very important cultural object and integral part of ceremony and tribal rituals. This item is 19th– early 20th century. 19″ iron blade. An incredibly decorated Dayak two for one Sword and Dagger. Mandu were traditionally used as both weapons and in traditional headhunting ceremonies. The pigment painted hilt is decorated with boars teeth and fur. Both the dagger and the sword are made from carved antler and bone. The is a patina to areas that would have been touched. Possibly from the Iban subset of the Dayak people. 33 inches long. There are two loose teeth but the item is in very good condition. Old BURMA sword DHA + Borneo Dayak scabbard
North BURMA tribal sword DHA with decorated scabbard A fine"dha" Sword, from Burma. This dha comes from the tribal regions of the Northern part of Burma. Some decorations on the two-partite wooden scabbard(held together by rattan stripes) are similar to the Naga people(but it is does not originate from there) but the long. Gently curved blade is typically Shan or at least Burmese. The blade has some chiseled decoration as seen on the jpgs. Some decoration elements of the scabbard, as the multi-colored hair have come off due to age otherwise item is still in very good condition. UPDATE: I have received several emails regarding the origin of this piece(thanks so much! now here are the following additions to the description: This is a dha from Burma(1940s-1960s) but the scabbard originates from a very different region.
