They have a great number ... moreof masked figures that represent spirits of the bush, and fulfill a variety of social, political, and religious functions. Although eleven individual types of masks can be distinguished by formal criteria, the types cannot be associated with specific functions because the meaning of the masks changes over time. Dan people have achieved notoriety in the area for their entertainment festivals which were historically village ceremonies, but are today performed largely for tourists. During these performances, masked performers dance on stilts.

Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Liberia: Extremly Rare Authentic Large Tribal used African mask from the Dan.
Liberia: Extremly Rare Authentic Large Tribal used African mask from the Dan. Hand carved from a single piece of colorful painted wood. Leather, old shells, many feathers. Height: 96 cm. The 350.000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte Iv. and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, coffee, rice and manioc. They also live off game and fish. The Dan have the reputation of being fierce warriors, always battling their neighbors, the We, the Guro, and the Mano. From a cultural viewpoint the Dan are close to the We populations situated in forest regions of the south, and against whom they have waged innumerable wars. Lacking a central authority. The various groups had neither a political institution nor unity. The village is under ... moreauthority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political unity, reinforcing rules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. These societies called upon the tutelary spirits of the bush. The most powerful. Even today, is the secret society of the leopard, the go. Which, without having fully achieved its stabilizing and unifying goal, nevertheless grows from one year to the next. The leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. In order to attain adult status, all the boys and girls of the same age-group undergo an initiation that includes, in addition to specific teaching, circumcision for the former and clitoridectomy for the latter. To underline the transitional aspect of this trial, it takes place in the world of the bush– the realm inhabited by spirits who, like the ancestors, can play a mediating role between humans and supreme being Zran. AFRICAN CEREMONIAL DAN FACE MASK - LIBERIA/IVORY COAST COWRIE SHELL
African Dan Ceremonial Face Mask w/Cowrie Shells/ Bells(one bell inside broke) The Dan masks were used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. Dan masks are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation, till he one day enters the spirit realm. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms- the village with all inhabitants(human realm) And the forest(bon) spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. ... moreThe mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male mask dancer dons the mask. He is transformed into a spirit. The mask dancer goes into a deep trance during rituals and brings forth messages of wisdom from his forebears. The messages is inaudible and in uncontrollable utters, a wise man accompany the dancer during the ritual and translates the messages. The messages are often words of great wisdom, prescribing a way of life that will lead to longevity, health and prosperity. See photos for part of description Measures approx.12" tall

Sharing a wide variety of uses they are the personal masks of initiated adult men and would be carried on their person or kept on personal shrines in the home. They serve to mark the passage of an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. The small masks may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner’s would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Small masks placed on shrines would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patination of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. Often delicate feminine features are carved onto the small masks with great concern for detail and accuracy similar to the larger danced masks. And like the full-sized dance masks the smaller masks reflect the great diversity of style

Who are also known by the name Yacuba, live in the western part of the West Coast and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. The 350,000 Dan people make their living from farming cocoa, rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Today, the leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. Dan people have achieved notoriety in the area for their entertainment festivals which were historically village ceremonies, but are today performed largely for tourists. During these festivals, masked performers dance on stilts. The Dan Maou people live in the northwestern part of the Dan region. Their masks are distinguished by a long beak-like form at the chin or mouth. Masks like these were feared by the general population as they served a judiciary function in denouncing spell-casters.
