Oxidation on metal, dirt cloth, encrustation worn away in places, Dan Firewatch Mask Zakpai Ge Liberia Africa Additional Information: A beautiful and strong wooden face mask with gorgeous dark patina and decoration of cowrie shells. Brass bells and amulets with charms wrapped in cotton cloth. This is a Dan mask known as ‘Zakpai ge’(or Zakpei Ge) or Gunye Ge(gunyege) an active and aggressive mask that serves a number of functions. When performing as a ‘firewatch’ mask, Zakpai would insure proper use of cooking fires by women and will throw sticks and things about and knock over cook pots with their meals into the fires and may even beat the women if they were careless in their use of fire. In the past it also served as a war mask. This is a classic example of traditional old mask with delicate features, including a fine nose a prominent mouth and the typical Zakpai Ge round and open eyes with a dynamic profile of the face and caved in a very thin wood. This beautiful mask would be a good addition to a collection. It shows much handling and some age. Recommended Reading: Harley. G.W. Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. Exceptional old Dan Runners Mask from West Africa African Masks from Liberia
A beautiful older(mid 20th Century. Perhaps earlier) Runner's Dan mask called a GUNYEGE MASK. ON AUCT ION Round eyed masks like this one are used in racing games and ceremonies in which the masked spirit must compete against unmasked runners. If the wearer loses the race. It means the spirit has deserted that person and the mask goes to the winner, as a trophy to wear in the next race. Its wearer is pursued by an unmasked runner or runners and, if caught, the unmasked runner wears the mask and is, in turn, pursued. Historically, these races trained men to fight and the winner gained social recognition. Nowadays, the races are more like a game. It has a beautiful use patina- inside(breath patina- if you've ever put on a Halloween mask you know it gets very hot and steamy/sweaty inside) This patina is very difficult to reproduce/fake) ... moreand outside(wear and patina/shine consistent with a mask used ethnographically with sacrificial offers(cola.   African Dan, We, Kran (Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire) Koagle,Monkey,Chimpanzee Mask
Koagle(Monkey. Chimpanzee) mask from the We or Kran people of the Dan region of Liberia or the Cote d' Ivoire. 6" H. Carved in traditional simple style with prominent forehead, sunken eyes, and protruding, open mouth. Masks of this type were once used to incite agressive behavior in men about to go into battle. They were later used. And are used today to to teach good behaviour as the animalistic behaviour of the dancers wearing these mask parallels the unpredictble actions of the ape while they dance and act wildly, chaotically, and irresponsibly. Mask appears to have some age and patina to it. And the African trader I bought it from said it was a slightly older, maybe a mid-late 20th century piece. gsrx_vers_474(GS 6.4.2(474)

Large African Dan Tribal Mask with Cowrie Shells 18 iches high
Please bear with me as I know little about African Tribal Masks but have been commissioned to sell this and many other items that belonged to my Father inlaw. From what I have learned this is of Dan Tribe origin with Cowrie Shells. This mask is 18" high. 11" wide and 10" deep. It is put together with some copper wire and woven string and rope. It appears that it was meant to hang from the ceiling or pole. Possibly a wall but it is almost a complete head rather than a mask. The black decorations at the end of the braids appear to be seed pods broken in half. The face is wood and the back is some sort of burlap. If you can school me on the specifics of this piece, please do. I really do not know what the value is. Thank you.

BEAUTIFUL OLD DAN PEOPLE PAINTED WOOD MASK- FROM LIBERIA
You are bidding on a Beautiful Old DAN PEOPLE wood mask. With painted eyes, from Liberia. Dan sculptors mainly produce masks which deal with virtually every element in Dan society. Including education, competition, war, peace, social regulation, and of course, entertainment. They also produce stylized wooden spoons and intricate game boards used for mancala, a common game of"count and capture" Oral traditions describe the Dan society of the 19th century as lacking any central governing power. Social cohesion was fostered by a shared language and a preference for intermarriage. Generally. Each village had a headman who had earned his position of advantage in the community through hard work in the fields and through luck as a hunter. They usually surrounded themselves with young warriors for protection from invading neighbors and ... moreexchanged gifts with other chiefs in order to heighten their own prestige. Out of this custom was born the basic tradition of tin among the Dan, which was based on displaying one's success in order to build a good reputation and name. The Dan world view holds that everything can be divided into two separate and clear categories. The primary dichotomy is between village and bush. In other words, things that have been controlled by man and things that have not. Crossing over the dividing line is dangerous business, and whenever it is done, whether to clear new fields or simply crossing the forest, the bush spirits must be appeased. In order to take part in village life, the bush spirits must take corporeal form. The Dan believe that all creatures have a spirit soul(du) which is imparted onto humans and animals from the creator god, Xra, through birth. One's du is immortal and is passed on after death to a new being. However, some du remain bodiless. They inhabit the forests as bush spirits and must establish a relationship with a person if they wish to be manifested and honored. Often the spirit will request the chosen person to dance the spirit, utilizing a mask to illustr
