Title, Dan Maternity Figure Child on Back 34 Inch Cote d'Ivoire Liberia African Type of Object, Carving. Sculpture, statue, figure, Country of Origin, ... moreCote d'Ivoire/Liberia, People, Dan, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, second 20th century, Dimensions, 34 inches H. x 10 inches W. x 8.5 inches D. Overall Condition, Fair to good. Some of our beads have traveled at least three continents. And have graced numerous owners. Small chips, corrosion, and pitting are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. Damage/Repair, cracks in head. To the back, chipped mouth, Additional Information: A remarkably large and beautiful maternity figure of a mother carrying her child on the back. Sculpted female figures with a child on their back among the Dan exemplify the ideas of fertility and continuity of the family. These figures are known as ‘lu me’ or wooden person and can be over 60 centimeters in height. They do not portray ancestors but are stylized portraits of real individuals closely representing the hairstyle. Body markings, and physiognomy of the wife. These sculptures are superb examples of Dan sculpture and were often the work of well-known artists who worked in secret away from women and children as they carved the lu me figures. In some instances ‘lu me’ sculptures are made public to the village during a ceremony in which the man who commissioned the carving is recognized and gaining social prestige. These figures may also be kept in small houses and only publicly shown on special occasions. This figure is shown carrying a child on her back in a traditional and sculpturally classical fashion. She stands with great strength reflecting her status as a mature woman who has borne children and achieved recognized social status. Her body is replete with the complex markings of elaborate scarification indicating her status and wealth. These body markings are practices that are rarely followed today therefore the figure is a true example of sculpture as practi

Minor cracks and chips. GREBO"Grebo" means"leaping monkey people. a reference to their flight from a former homeland near the Sahara. Their major economic activity is producing palm oil and palm kernels for export. The culture of the Grebo. A little-known ethnic group inhabiting the coastal region of eastern Liberia and the bordering forestlands, was shaped in a considerable degree by their neighbors to the north, the Kran and Dan. Unlike the other people living in Liberia, and Cote D'Ivoire the Grebo are not structured by the Poro society. They are ruled by a chief known as bodio who lives in near total isolation and also assumed the function of grand priest. The Grebo sculpt several types of masks. The masks appeared during rituals reserved for initiates and at the time of festive occasions. When the whole population was able to see them. The war masks designed primarily to terrify, appeared during battles, in the dances beforehand, and at the funerals of warriors. Figures are rare. Their style is closely related to Dan. Female masks are rounded or oval, narrow eyes and finely delicate non-challenging features, whereas the male mask is larger in size, grosser in proportions, with an open and menacing mouth with teeth, tube-like e

DAN AFRICAN MASK II- LIBERIA
DAN GE GON MASK– Liberia(Hornbill mask) This mask is called Ge Gon. masculine" Ge. It exists only among the Northern Dan and their neighbors. It appears to be a variation of bird-beaked masks from the Mau. The mask has oval or slit eyes, and a large beak or snout with a black beard of monkey fur. The headdress of this Ge is ornamented with mirror glass, cowries, cloth, fur, and tall white feathers. As the mask spirit swoops and dances, the masker carries in its hands horsetail fly whisks that are waved gently to imitate a large and graceful bird. The bird represented by the Ge Gon is probably the hornbill. Important in Dan mythology as the first being created by Zlan and as bringer of the oil palm, which is an important food source of the Dan. Originally an educational mask instructing people on the importance of the hornbill bird to ... moretheir culture. They are now used mostly for entertainment. This fine example shows the recognizable Dan features of the bulbous forehead and wide slit eyes. The mouth is replaced by the bird beak(probably representing the Hornbill) Measurements: 9.5 inches long and 5.75 inches wide

It is characterized by a very long bird beak-like with carved horns along the hairline and aluminum sheets and sruds encrusted in the forehead! The mask has slitted eyes. Masks with hornbill beak like this were found among the Dan and also among many other ethnic groups living in their neighborhood. The long beak makes this mask special. The Dan people. Who live in Liberia and the Ivory Coast, are governed largely by secret societies. The Leopard Society acts as a major regulator of Dan life, and initiates young men. Famous for their masks, the Dan believe that spirits, known as"Du, live in the forests and manifest themselves to humans in masks and masquerades, instructing and sustaining the Dan in life. Thus masks are used as agents of social control. Among the Mau masks with hornbill horns are used in the man's association, Koma. And are said to represent the spirits of bush called to establish order and are intended to exert a certain social control and chase away evil forces. Recommended Reading: E. Spectacular Dan Poro Society Ceremonial Mask, Liberia/Ivory Coast
The Dan masks/headdress were used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks/headdress are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. Dan masks/headdress are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask/headdress served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation, till he one day enters the spirit realm. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms- the village with all inhabitants(human realm) And the forest(bon) spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect ... moreexample of the materials. Once the male mask dancer dons the mask/headdress. He is transformed into a spirit. The mask dancer goes into a deep trance during rituals and brings forth messages of wisdom from his forebears. The messages is inaudible and in uncontrollable utters, a wise man accompany the dancer during the ritual and translates the messages. The messages are often words of great wisdom, prescribing a way of life that will lead to longevity, health and prosperity. This Dan mask measures 15" in height. 10" Materials: wood. Multiple rows of cowrie shells, authentic animal horns, medicine pouches. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED. The face is symmetrical and well carved and the hair is cut in a very intricate braid pattern. The patina is from age and not from a bottle of paint or smoke There are hints of light green in the carved hair. The age of the mask is around 75 years old possible older and has been in the United States for 50 years. it was purchased from a older lady about 25 years ago that had had it in her collection for years It has been drilled and wired for easy wall hanging. and also has holes in the bottom probably for wearing wich one side has split away from the hole but is not seen as it is in the back and a very old break as it has oxidized ... morewith the piece. It would be great as a collectors item or used as a rustic tribal wall hanging in a collection of african art. it has a beauty and softness that you dont offten see in some tribal maskes. Sharing a wide variety of uses they are the personal masks of initiated adult men and would be carried on their person or kept on personal shrines in the home. They carried small"passport" masks in leather pouches when they traveled. Passport masks serve to mark the passage of an initiate into the men secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. The small masks may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner’s would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Small masks placed on shrines would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. Like the full-sized dance masks the smaller masks reflect the great diversity of styles and forms of the larger masks. For more information. And

Title, Dan Mask Zakpei Ge Firewatch Mask Liberia African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Liberia and Ivory Coast, People, Dan- Yacuba, Materials, Wood. Red Cloth, tin or aluminum, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, Mask: 9.75 Inches H. x 5.75 inches W. with stand: 15.25 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, chipped hairstyle Additional Information: This well carved mask is from the Dan people of Liberia. Also known as the Yacuba. The Dan live in politically non-centralized villages and towns ruling themselves through a complex arrangement of family lineages, men’s secret societies, and conjunct initiation ceremonies. Masks among the Dan are generally recognized under the term Ge that would roughly equate to our idea of spirits or supernatural beings or forces. Most attributed to the forest ... morewhere the wild spirits live. With its forehead stained with reddish-brown cola nut coloring, red cloth covering the eyes and lips, this striking mask is known as Zakpai Ge and is an active and aggressive mask that serves a number of functions. It’s primary role is that of a ‘firewatch’ mask that insures proper use of cooking fires by women. Accompanied by drums it confronts a woman who has been using fire carelessly or a fire much too large for its purpose. It appears in a very aggressive dance and will throw sticks and things about, knock over the cook pot with their meals into the fire and may even beat the women who set the fire to cook. Not a friendly mask at all. It also in some areas serves as a war mask. When used the mask had a cloth wrap around the outer edge that covered the dancer when wearing the mask, in fact it may have been hooked onto the small at the nail at the top of the mask, The remains of Kola nut staining on the forehead is the result of ritual spitting of the cola nut as a sacrificial offering. The holes around the edge of the mask were used to hold a woven netting to keep the mask close to the face during the vigorous ‘da

Dan Mask , Libya , Africa. Hand Painted Circa 1940

Old Dan Mask, found in apartment clearance
A powerful old mask from the Dan people of Cote d'Ivoire. This example is unusual for the amount of handling it shows and for the absence of eye-holes. Which makes me think it might have been used as a shrine piece. Inside the mouth, the bottom of which broke off at some point and was repaired in-culture, there are encrusted traces of offerings. I purchased this from a woman in San Diego who was selling off a cache of older African objects that had been left behind by a departing tenant in an apartment building she owned. The piece measures 11 1/2 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and about 4 inches deep. The stand is for photography only, and is not included in the sale. About Me and My Selling Philosophy I have been collecting African art for more than a decade. Over the years. My collection has gotten too large for the available space, and ... moreI’ve discovered I get more pleasure selling things to others who appreciate them than keeping a growing pile of interesting stuff in the basement. My inventory is carefully selected from the offerings of generalist antique dealers. Fellow collectors, estate re-sellers and“pickers” in the United States and Britain. Aside from a few rare exceptions(well-made contemporary masquerades. Signed works of modern art, etc. I do not buy pieces recently arrived from Africa, since my primary interest is in wooden masks and figures from the colonial period(1880-1960 or so) I understand the value of provenance to collectors in this field. And therefore always seek to provide as much information as possible about an object’s previous ownership history. Like anyone who regularly buys this kind of material through the internet. I get a dud from time to time, but that’s on me. Each piece I choose to list here is. To my eye, aesthetically worthwhile– either authentically used in-culture or, for example in the case of some colonial pieces or objects with earlier collection dates, at least interesting and well-made. Each object. In other words, is something I would keep for myself if my house

Dan Bagle Mask, Liberia Cote d'Ivoire Guinea, African art Gioh Yakuba passport
Dan masks are considered a real treasure in African art. Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated ... morefrom the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. As with most masks in the Dan pantheon, this bagle mask would have been used primarily for entertainment and social bonding ceremonies, rather than for rites or initiations controlled by secret societies. Dan masks such as these would generally be owned by individual families, and the masqueraders are known even today as being especially talented dancers. This piece is in very good condition, with most of its embellishments remaining in place and in decent or better condition. The cowries around the crest traditionally signify prosperity, and the mask features three bells attached to its lower perimeter, which add considerably to the masquerade performance, as they keep a beat with the dancer as they dance to music. Standard wear marks are in evidence, as well as what appears to be salt deposits around the perimeter of the rear of the mask, probably the result of sweat. We do not have an ironclad provenance on the piece however, so these are merely speculation. In

If not idealized representation of the human face. They have certain fundamental aesthetic criteria including: a very high and rounded forehead, a thin mouth( an aristocratic criteria of the Dan) and protruding cheekbones. In contrast. Guere masks have an expressionist style. Guere masks are characterized by distortions in the treatment of the face or parts of the face, leading to typically extravagant characteristics: this might be the forehead, the cheekbones, the mouth, the nose or the eyes. Wooden masks are ... moregreat in number. They embody the supernatural spiritual force called‘gle’ That lives in the woods and wishes to participate in the lives of the village men. Dan statues are powerfully modelled and generally represent a woman. The body is robust. In a standing position with the arms dangling. The Dan live to the north east of Liberia and to the north west of the Ivory Coast. In regions that are covered by forest in the south and by the savannah in the north. Grebo" ... moremeans"leaping monkey people. a reference to their flight from a former homeland near the Sahara.Their major economic activity is producing palm oil and palm kernels for export. The culture of the Grebo, a little-known ethnic group inhabiting the coastal region of eastern Liberia and the bordering forestlands, was shaped in a considerable degree by their neighbors to the north, the Kran and Dan. We and other neighboring tribes. zyama PLEASE NOTE- We are selling this mask and many other to support our projects in conjunction with'WaterAid' to help provide clean water
