Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative ... moreof spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. The energy and existence of these spirits is said to exist deep in the forest where the trees grow tall and dense. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. Most likely intended for use as a'racer mask' part of a men's training game intended to teach hunting and fighting skills) This mid-sized mask displays the ubiquitous rounded eyes with embossed perimeters common to many Dan masks. It has a ridged, slightly protruding forehead, often associated with femininity(especially in the Deangle) and two patterned'brows' which are most likely representative of scarifications. The patina is a dark blackish-brown and is somewhat unevenly worn smooth. The condition of the mask is very

It is a ‘firewatch’ mask that insures proper use of cooking fires by women and will throw sticks and things about and knock over cookpots with their meals into the fires and may even beat the women if they were careless in their use of fire. Arts of Africa - Dan Bird Mask - Liberia - Guinea - 24" Height x 12" Wide
Côte d’Ivoire. Liberia, Guinea STAND NOT INCLUDED The 350,000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte d’Ivoire and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, coffee, rice and manioc. They also live off game and fish. The Dan have the reputation of being fierce warriors, always battling their neighbors, the We, the Guro, and the Mano. From a cultural viewpoint the Dan are close to the We populations situated in forest regions of the south, and against whom they have waged innumerable wars. Lacking a central authority, the various groups had neither a political institution nor unity. The village is under authority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political ... moreunity, reinforcing rules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. These societies called upon the tutelary spirits of the bush. The most powerful, even today, is the secret society of the leopard, the go, which, without having fully achieved its stabilizing and unifying goal, nevertheless grows from one year to the next. The leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. In order to attain adult status, all the boys and girls of the same age-group undergo an initiation that includes, in addition to specific teaching, circumcision for the former and clitoridectomy for the latter. To underline the transitional aspect of this trial, it takes place in the world of the bush– the realm inhabited by spirits who, like the ancestors, can play a mediating role between humans and supreme being Zran. Dan people have achieved notoriety for their entertainment festivals, which were village ceremonies, but are today performed largely for important visitors. During these festivals, masked performers dance on stilt

Dan Tribal Mask w/Cowrie Shells-Applied Cloth & Bells-Antique Côte D'Ivoire
This interesting mask was purchased somewhere in the Côte D'Ivoire in West Africa around 1955 by our father. Who was then a pilot for a major oil exploration company. The face of the mask. Lot 209, Outstanding Dan Poro Society Ceremonial Mask, Liberia / Ivory Coast
The Dan masks were used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male ... moremask dancer dons the mask. He is transformed into a spirit. BACKGROUND Dan people live in the western part of the West Coast and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by savannah in the north. They make their living from framing cocoa. Rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Slaves were finally emancipated in the USA, after centuries of brutal oppression and exploitation. Some of these people came back to Africa and live in present day Liberia. Although they still practiced some of the traditions, they were a mixed group of people that practiced different customs. Neighboring tribes mainly from the West Coast influenced them and the dominant Dan tribe took root in Liberia. Today, the leopard society acts as a major regular of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. Dan masks are some of the most famous art in the Western world. There are numerous type of Dan masks and their functions are unique. The Gunyeya mask, also called a racing mask, has a pointed face and
African tribal Dan passport mask, ethnographic art home decor, Cote d' Ivorie 14
The Dan tribe of Ivory Coast called the miniature masks passport masks because of their size and variety of uses. They are masks of initiated adult men that would be carried with them or kept on personal shrines in their home. They mark the passage as an initiate into the men's secret society and his attaining a higher rank. At the suggestion of diviners small masks would be given to children to wear to ward off evil or cure illness. Men carried small“passport” masks in leather pouches when they traveled as a form of identification. This mask is thought to be around 5 to ten years old and measures 4.5" X 2.5"

Arts of Africa - Ceremonial Dan Mask - Liberia - Guinea - 14" Height x 9" Wide
Côte d’Ivoire. Liberia, Guinea The 350.000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte d’Ivoire and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. Lacking a central authority. The various groups had neither a political institution nor unity. The village is under authority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political unity, reinforcing ... morerules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. These societies called upon the tutelary spirits of the bush. The most powerful, even today, is the secret society of the leopard, the go. Which, without having fully achieved its stabilizing and unifying goal, nevertheless grows from one year to the next. Dan people have achieved notoriety for their entertainment festivals. Which were village ceremonies, but are today performed largely for important visitors. During these festivals, masked performers dance on stilts. The go master. T

OLD AFRICAN DAN MASK RUNNER RACING
DAN MASK Hard-wood. Dan masks are characterized by a concave face. A pointed chin, a protruding mouth, an upturned nose, a high-domed forehead and are often covered in a rich brown patina. Similar masks are found throughout the country, but regional stylistic variations occur. For example, northern face masks tend to have very fine features, a high-domed smooth forehead, eyes set in the middle of the face and a very smooth brown patina obtained by immersing the mask in a pool of mud. Southern masks, on the other hand, have protruding features and a rougher patina obtained by applying vegetal pigments. There are a variety of Dan face masks. Each of which has a different function. The Dangle mask has a ridge in the middle of the forehead and slit eyes. Which are occasionally covered with white kaolin. It is worn by the intermediary who acts ... morebetween the village and the forest initiation camp. The Tamale mask is worn during entertainment celebrations and has similar features to the Deangle mask. But is larger and more detailed. The Gunyeya mask. Also called a racing mask, has a pointed face and typical large circular eyes. Its wearer is pursued by an unmasked runner and, if caught, the unmasked runner wears the mask and is, in turn, pursued. Historically, these races trained men to fight and the winner gained social recognition. Nowadays, the races are more like a game. The Zakpai mask has similar features to the Gunyeya. But has a red cloth over its eyes. It acts against bush fires during the dry season. Dan masks are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation. Before the actual carving process the adult male cleanse himself. Then sets off to the forest to find a suitable piece of wood. When he reaches the initiation camp, he commences with the carving. On completion of the mask, he carefully plans the song, music and dance, which are to accompany the initiation ceremony. After the

In the past it also served as a war mask. The Dan. Historically a warrior people, are thought to have been in the Ivory Coast area for perhaps two thousand years, though the evidence for this is scant. It is known however that the Dan were heavily preyed upon by slave raiders in the 17/18th century, and the creation of Liberia in 1847 was marked by the repatriation of large numbers of them. These returning ex-slaves eventually outnumbered their relatives in the Ivory Coast, and that is still the case today. The Dan have no centralized government, and each village is relatively autonomous. The ability to accumulate wealth and prove one's ability are highly prized

Note- This is an exceptional Guere Anyi war mask. Full of character. It is well used. The We/ Wee/ Guere/ Gere/ N'gere/ Ngere people live south and south-East of the more famous Dan people in Cote d'Ivoire/ Ivory Coast/ Elfenbeinkuste. They share many aspects of culture with the neighbouring Dan. They created masks that were used during festivities. Funerals, rituals, wars, and that look rather scary and monstrous. Modern ethnology puts the Wobe and Guere together under the name We. Despite the fact that the people themselves use the old names. The We population is estimated at 100,000. Rice, yams, taro, manioc, maize, and bananas are the primary crops grown. Farming and hunting have been largely replaced by laboring in the diamond camps or working at the rubber plantations. Confederations govern both ethnic groups- the largest is the warrior confederation which is led by a military chief, who also acts as a civil authority. The family units also play an important role in We social life. The art of Guere and Wobe people is stylistically connected and both
