Their major economic activity is producing palm oil and palm kernels for export. The culture of the Grebo. A little-known ethnic group inhabiting the coastal region of eastern Liberia and the bordering forestlands, was shaped in a considerable degree by their neighbors to the north, the Kran and Dan. Unlike the other people living in Liberia, and Cote D'Ivoire the Grebo are not structured by the Poro society. They are ruled by a chief known as bodio who lives in near total isolation and also assumed the function of grand priest. The Grebo sculpt several types of masks. The masks appeared during rituals reserved for initiates and at the time of festive occasions. When the whole population was able to see them. The war masks designed primarily to terrify, appeared during battles, in the dances beforehand, and at the funerals of warriors. Figures are rare. Their style is closely related to Dan. Nose  and mouth. This mask belongs to the category of Deangle or Tangle.  The mask's gender is unclear. But for many Dan, Deangle mask incarnates the a female-beauty. Thought to portray a female, it dances in a style thought to be feminine, with gliding steps and graceful movements. Deangle dances for all to see, as"she" entertains and instructs the village in peaceful pursuits. Deangle mask reflects the skill of the artist and taste of the patron, and while local variations occur, there are long established criteria for Deangle that reflect a continuum in Dan cultural aesthetics and styles. The face is surrounded by holes, which had been used to attach a complex costume designed to enhance her appearance and to complete the mask. Additional Information: Miniature masks often called"passport" or"Ma" masks are found among the various peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast. Including the Dan, Yacuba, Gio, Wenion(We, Guere) Geh, Loma, Konor, and Bete. Sharing a wide variety of uses they are the personal masks of initiated adult men and would be carried on their person or kept on personal shrines in the home. They serve to mark the passage ... moreof an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. The small masks may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner’s would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Small masks placed on shrines would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patination of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. Often delicate feminine features are carved onto the small masks with great concern for detail and accuracy similar to the larger danced masks. And like the full-sized dance masks the smaller masks reflect the great diversity of styles and forms of the larger masks. As a result. There is no single style of"Ma" mask for they reflect not only their cultural heritage but equally reflect the variety of uses to which they are put. In addition to the wooden carved masks other examples of these miniature ma

Mask Represents"Forest Spirit" as it was noted on the tag(original tag is still attached) BACKSTORY& HISTORY OF THE MASK Firstly. I am not a collector. I know very little of African art or African artifacts or collectibles. I happened to purchase this mask while in South Africa while shooting a CHEX cereal commercial outside of Cape Town back in 1997. After we finished shooting the project, my boss(Gary) and I decided to ... moretake a safari tour into Swaziland to see some of the African not so confined to the city's limits. It was a once in a lifetime trip, and we wanted to take advantage of the rare opportunity to experience some of Africa's more rare sights. While in Swaziland. I stumbled across a Dan mask in a tiny village souvenir shack off the main road(I don't recall the name of the village, and its not likely I ever did) Though there were a few other masks there which were less expensive, I remember this mask really standing out over the others. Its features were very striking. It looked and smelled as if it was very old, and somehow very powerful; I simply had to have it- regardless of the price comparison over the others. I was excited to bring it home with me as a memento of Africa, not really as any kind of investment, just something to hang on the wall. The price was R1200(1,200 Rand) something close to $200 in US currency(from what I remember the exchange rate to be back then) The mask was marked as coming from the Ivory Coast and being representative of Forest Spirit. I have no idea how it got to that area of Africa, but it really didn’t matter to me, I wanted it solely as a

They make their living from framing cocoa. Rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Slaves were finally emancipated in the USA, after centuries of brutal oppression and exploitation. Some of these people came back to Africa and live in present day Liberia. Although they still practiced some of the traditions, they were a mixed group of people that practiced different customs. Neighboring tribes mainly from the West Coast influenced them and the dominant Dan tribe took root in Liberia. Today, the leopard society acts as a major regular of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. Dan masks are some of the most famous art in the Western world. There are numerous type of Dan masks and their functions are unique. Arts of Africa - Dan Mask - Bells & shells - Liberia - - 15" Height x 13" Wide
Côte d’Ivoire. Liberia, Guinea The 350,000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte d’Ivoire and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, coffee, rice and manioc. They also live off game and fish. The Dan have the reputation of being fierce warriors, always battling their neighbors, the We, the Guro, and the Mano. From a cultural viewpoint the Dan are close to the We populations situated in forest regions of the south, and against whom they have waged innumerable wars. Lacking a central authority, the various groups had neither a political institution nor unity. The village is under authority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political unity, reinforcing ... morerules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. These societies called upon the tutelary spirits of the bush. The most powerful, even today, is the secret society of the leopard, the go, which, without having fully achieved its stabilizing and unifying goal, nevertheless grows from one year to the next. The leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. In order to attain adult status, all the boys and girls of the same age-group undergo an initiation that includes, in addition to specific teaching, circumcision for the former and clitoridectomy for the latter. To underline the transitional aspect of this trial, it takes place in the world of the bush– the realm inhabited by spirits who, like the ancestors, can play a mediating role between humans and supreme being Zran. Dan people have achieved notoriety for their entertainment festivals, which were village ceremonies, but are today performed largely for important visitors. During these festivals, masked performers dance on stilts. The go master, t

Antique African Sacred Dan Mask Of Hand Carved Wood From Liberia
This is a hand carved wooden mask made by the Dan People of Liberia. Africa. This sacred mask was used in tribal ceremonies and offered protection. The Dan Tribe masks are identified by their high forehead and pouting mouth. The mouth is the opening that you can see through when wearing it. As you can see, this was carved by hand and has a glossy black finish on the face. Is this a gle mask? She looks like a lovely lady to me. I assume the holes on the side were to tie it to the face. The hole at the top has been used to hang it for decoration. The mask measures 15 1/2" tall. 6 1/4" wide and 5" deep at the forehead. It weighs 2 pounds 1.5 ounces. I am not an expert on African(or any) masks. But this looks like it is in very good condition. There's a bit of wear on the paint at the tip of the nose and the raised decorations ... moreon the forehead. Those are the only flaws that I can find. I wish this mask could talk. It could tell me how it got from Liberia to an antique shop in Canada where my friend purchased it over 40 years ago. It's been a much loved display piece in his home since then.now. Moving, he must part with many treasures. I will be happy to answer any questions and. Of course, combine your shipping. On a personal note to my Ebay friends: If you are an expert on masks. I have several to auction that I cannot identify and would sincerely appreciate any offer of assistance. My best guess is that they are from Southeast Asia.

More masks are created than any other form of sculpture. Spiritually, masks are perceived to embody the most powerful of spirit forces. In addition, the gle must reveal its intended function in the dream or that dream is considered useless. The dreamer. Who must be an initiated member of the men's society, reports the dream to the council of elders. They then decide whether the masquerade ensemble should be created for that man to wear and perform. It is believed that each gle has its own personality, character, dance, speech patterns, likes, and dislikes, and it is given a personal name. Giant Hyena African Helmet Mask Dan Tribe Liberia Excellent! African Masquerade
Huge Museum Quality Hyena Helmet Mask. From the Dan tribe in Liberia. 23" long. 13" deep, 11" wide. My daughter pictured is 6 feet tall. So you can imagine it is a big cool mask. This mask was used in actual ceremonies! Very Very cool! The Dan artists are really amazing and seem to know how to capture the light with their art. And create really spiritual items! Happy Bidding! More on the Dan Tribe: The stark faces of Dan masks easily distinguish them among African art. The Dan have inhabited the Ivory Coast and Liberia since the eighth century B.C. A loose confederation of villages totaling some 350.000 individuals, they have spent much of their history battling neighboring tribes and sometimes each other. This gave them a ferocious reputation as each Dan warrior sought tin: individual prestige or glory. In former times tin ... morewas available through bravery in war; but the encroachment of colonial governments, and increased centralization has made tribal conflicts less common. Today's young Dan warrior must find his tin through other pursuits. Unity was finally brought to the Dan people with the institution of the Leopard Society or Go in the late 1800s.

Fantastic 1920s DAN mask, guaranteed antique piece
Fantastic 1920s DAN mask. Guaranteed antique piece Recently I found this mask in an old Vienna estate. It came along with a larger mask with similar features(not on auction here) All in all this mask here appears to be a very unusual piece: style points to the Dan people yet with some features from the neighboring groups such as the Guro and Bete. Scarification on the forehead with a dominant ridge yet with a chin very different from the usual Dan masks. Size is small yet not that small that we could talk about a passport mask. No holes for a string for a potential wearer only one hole on top of the piece. The"depths" of the piece(see profile view) is pretty high compared to other masks. Patina is perfectly old. Expression gorgeous! Full guarantee that this is an old, antique item. I estimate it from at least 1920s, maybe older. ... morePerhaps a piece for the big auction houses, moderate starting bid. THEY NOT ONLY REPRESENT A DECORATIVE FUNCTION, BUT ALSO INDICATE THAT THE SPIRITS HAVE BLESSED THE ONE BEING INITIATED WITH WEALTH The cowrie shells used to be used for bartering and therefore had economic value. I cannot quote a figure for its value nor its age. However I have had it looked at by AAMM, and in their opinion, looking at the cloth and the rubbed areas show usage by the Dan people.
