Available is this Vintage Dan Ivory Coast Mni Miniature Passport Mask. It measures approximately 5" tall. I'm not an expert in African masks or art, but ... moremy guess is that this was made in 1960 or later. The charming patina gives it an aged look, though it could have been made to look like that. Antique? Vintage African Dan Deangle Mask Bells Cowrie Shells Tribal Wood Estate
I purchased this African mask at an estate sale. The people running the sale said that it was very likely purchased in New York City from an antique shop in the 1970's or 1980's. I do not know a great deal about African masks but I think that mask is one of the nicer one's that I have seen in my many years of searching for collectible and antique items. Some research leads me to believe that it was made by the Dan people of Liberia and that it is a deangle or dean gle type of mask. Including the rolls of cloth. This mask measures about 11 ½ by 8 inches. It weighs about 2 pounds 4.9 ounces. The mask is carved from some kind of wood. The bells are fashioned from some kind of metal. The clappers are iron and are attracted to a magnet. The bells are not attracted to a magnet even though it looks like rust on the inside of them. ... moreThey are definitely metal that looks cast. I do not know what kind of metal they are. I think that they probably a very oxidized brass or bronze and that the rust on the inside is from the clappers. The clappers move when the mask is moved and make a tinkling sound. The condition is much like you see it in my photos. It is generally in very good vintage condition. One of the cowrie shells is missing. It looks like the threads have loosened one one side where the the roll of cloth on top meets the roll of cloth on the bottom. It is not very noticeable and I have provided a close-up of it. There are no cracks or breaks in the wood. There is a little dusty looking soil. Otherwise. It is generally fine and as shown. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this mask to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description. Those paying with Paypal must have a confirmed address registered with Paypal. If you pay with Paypal. I will ship only to your confirmed address. I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explan

Being part of a private estate sale for a deceased world traveler who was very active in the 1940s. It is also considered a vintage item. The deceased had a rather large collection of very very old masks. All Dan masks are sacred; and are characterized by a concave face. A protruding mouth, high-domed forehead. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be the intermediaries, who acts between the village and the forest initiation camp, may act against bush fires during the dry season, used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, for entertainment. Over time, many among them have lost their original function ... moreand have been recycled into contexts related to entertainment, emerging only for festivals or events organized for visitors. Nonetheless, the great masks live on, their even more rare appearances being reserved for times of tension, when it is important they may exercise their role of social control and their faculty to reduce conflict or settle legal wrangles. Dan / Gere Mask with fur - Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Dan/ Gere Mask with fur- Côte d’Ivoire. West Africa For one year. In 1970, I taught English in the town of Daloa in the Ivory Coast. During that year, locals brought masks to my cottage that they wanted to sell me.I did purchase a few along with other African art. I sold many of them over the years and only kept my favorites. I am now selling two of my long time favorites. One of the reasons that I like them is their unique style. The other is the interesting animal fur and cowry shells that are used on the masks. The other is the unique and creative way in which the masks are carved with protruding horns from the faces. They did not come from the market places and were not commercially produced. This one is Dan/ Gere tribes that lived near Daloa. It is approximately, 13” x 9” by 6: deep. The locals claimed that they ... morewere used in ceremonies, but I cannot know that for sure. It seems unlikely to me as they wanted to sell me the masks. I do know that they came from the local area. ITEM CONDITION: The mask is in good condition. The animal skin and hair is dry but in good shape. The cord on the back was added by me to hang on the wall. Please review the pictures to assess your level of interest. Dan The Krahn arrived in the area known as Liberia as part of early sixteenth century migrations from the north-east and what is now the. This migration occurred due to pressure on local populations resulting from an emigration of Western Sudan tribes after the decline of medieval empires. As well as an increase in regional tribal wars. During this timeframe. The African slave trade was becoming more prominent within Liberia. Although some Kru tribes faced capture by Westerners, it was more common for the Krahn and other coastal peoples in Liberia to serve as local traders, brokering deals within the Western slave market. The Kru were so opposed to slavery within their own tribe members that many committed suicide rather than face enslavement. SUPERB!! USED MALE DAN RACE MASK SHELLS/OCHRE/ROPE
DAN RACER MASK Liberia C. 1980 WOOD: 9” Tall. By 6” Across The Dan lives in northwestern Ivorie Coast. As farmers they clear forests or reside in the savannah regions in the North. The Dan arrived around the 8th century from the west and north of the western Sudan. They had the reputation of being fierce warriors. Always battling with their neighbours. Originally lacking central government they later created the Go Leopard Society. The Dan believes in a world that is divided into two distinct realms- the village that includes inhabitants and human-made utensils and on the other hand the realm of the forest and its wild animals. The wooden masks represent the incarnate supernatural spiritual force, which manifests as a dream to a male initiate. A council of elders decide if a mask should be created from the dream image to be worn by the dreamer. ... moreThe presence of the mask is required at any significant event in the tribal group. This was also known as a racing mask. It has a pointed face and typical large circular eyes. An unmasked runner pursues its wearer and, if caught, the unmasked runner wears the mask and is, in turn, pursued. Historically, these races trained the men to fight and the winner gained social recognition.Masks with circular eyeholes, which permit uninhibited vision on the part of the wearer are danced on two occasions and also named accordingly. They are known as the Racer Mask(gunye ge) and the Fire Mask(zakpei ge) mask types used by the Northern Dan. The Gunye ge hold running contests on a weekly basis during the dry season. Originally these contests tested the prowess of young warriors. The Zakpei Ge also appears during the dry season to inspect cooking fires and prevent the ever possible and life threatening bush-fires. Guilty women are chastised with a whip. Their cooking pots knocked over and taken as security for a fine of money. A WONDERFUL WARM DARK PATINA WITH HIGHLIGHTS. For the Dan. The mask is a channel of communication with the high god Zlan, but the real intermediaries are the

Striking Black African Liberia Dan Tribal Mask- Zoomorphic Attribute
BACKGROUND Dan people live in the western part of the West Coast and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa. Rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Slaves were finally emancipated in the USA, after centuries of brutal oppression and exploitation. Some of these people came back to Africa and live in present day Liberia. Although they still practiced some of the traditions, they were a mixed group of people that practiced different customs. Neighboring tribes mainly from the West Coast influenced them and the dominant Dan tribe took root in Liberia. Today, the leopard ... moresociety acts as a major regular of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. Dan masks are some of the most famous art in the Western world. There are numerous type of Dan masks and their functions are unique. Height: 9.75 Inches(measurements wood part only) Material: Wood. Encrusted Material, Pigment, Vegetal material, Metal Teeth. Estimate Age: Mid 20th Century. Condition: Good. Remarks: Stylized mask zoomorphic form. Exaggerated features, dark patina.

Rare, Large, Dan Diomande Wooden Hornbill Mask--Cote d'Ivoire
This beautiful mask was made by the Diomande. A Dan tribe noted for the extraordinary refined nature of their masks. Strangely reminiscent of Japanese theatrical masks. This mask is very cchematic in design and very highly-finished. It is, nevertheless, old and authentic with unmistakeable signs of age and use. Masks of the type were made by the secret Poro society. Which is extremely widespread among the Dan, Guro and Senofo peoples. The hornbill is an important totem animal, representing strong family values and identified with the nut and palm harvests. Hornbill masks are often used at important funerals, such as those of chiefs. Between ceremonies, they are kept in secrecy and given libations of palm-oil. This is a large mask. Over two feet high, with a deep, rich patina from regular oilings. The white reserve is colored with kaolin. ... moreThe mask is a beautiful display item and is among the most impressive masks I have seen. I recommend this mask to any lover of African art.

Pigment, vegetal fibers, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 13 inches H. x 7 inches W. x 4 inches D. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Additional Information: A classic Dan mask with an elongated lozenge face characterized by pointed cheecks. A large open mouth, a strong ... morenose, a high pointed head. This mask is called Deangle or Tangle. Thought to portray a female. It dances in a style thought to be feminine, with gliding steps and graceful movements. Deangle dances for all to see as"she" entertains and instructs the village in peaceful pursuits. Each Deangle mask reflects the skill of the artist and taste of the patron, and while local variations occur, there are long established criteria for Deangle that reflect a continuum in Dan cultural aesthetic and styles. The face is surrounded by holes, which had used to attach a complex costume designed to enhance her appearance and to complete the mask. In some case cowrie shells, bras teeth metal bells, and beads would be attached to the costume and the headdress that surrounds her forehead. On the offered example, the coiffure is carved with several plaits and beautifully decorated with cowrie shells, and beads. The forehead is also embellished with beads. Recommended Reading: G. And in cheek, chipped nose and mouth, scrapes, Additional Information: A ... morewell-carved small wooden mask from the Dan people of Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire. This mask belongs to the category of ‘Zakpai ge’ mask. An active and aggressive mask that serves a number of functions. It is a ‘firewatch’ mask that insures proper use of cooking fires by women and will throw sticks and things about and knock over cookpots with their meals into the fires and may even beat the women if they were careless in their use of fire. In the past it also served as a war mask. This is a classic example of traditional mask with delicate features, very thin carved wood and with a dynamic profile of the face. The Dan. Historically a warrior people, are thought to have been in the Ivory Coast area for perhaps two thousand years, though the evidence for this is scant. It is known however that the Dan were heavily preyed upon by slave raiders in the 17/18th century, and the creation of Liberia in 1847 was marked by the repatriation of large numbers of them. These returning ex-slaves eventually outnumbered their relatives in the Ivory Coast, and that is still the case today. The Dan have no centralized government, and each village is relatively autonom

Fine Dan Kran bird mask. Superb patina. Cote D'Ivoire.
Item: Large Dan-kran bird mask Traditional Origin: The We Dan Kran people of Ivory Coast and Liberia. Ethnography and Use: The Dan Kran people. A subset of the We people consisting of the Wobe, Guere and others, were know for creating powerfully expressive masks with geometric triangular features. It is common, for example, to note triangular eyes and cheekbones in most Dan Kran masks. Like their Dan relatives, the Krans hosted a wide variety of ceremonies which regulated societal order, rites, rituals and customs. Most Kran masks, such as offered here, are owned by individual families with particular members, linked directly to relevant society, using the mask in ceremonies related to social control, circumcision rites, funerals and entertainment. Item description: Usual triangular eyes typifying Kran tribal masks. Dark. Lustrous and appealing ... morepatina. Forehead stained white with ochre. Inside of the mouth stained red. Fine form and balance overall. As expected with a genuinely old mask. There are several areas of wood degradation and several cracks. Nonetheless a superb, authentic and rare African objet d'art treasure that is beautiful to behold. Measurement. 43cm high. 17cm wide and 18cm deep. Important information. Please note that this mask was vetted. Logged and approved for shipment out of Africa by an appropriate National Museums and monuments authority thereby complying with all laws and legal provisions.
