This one comes from the Dan people. Sharing a wide variety of uses they are the personal masks of initiated adult men and would be carried on their person or kept on personal shrines in the home. They carried small"passport" masks in leather pouches when they traveled. Passport masks serve to mark the passage of an initiate into the men secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. The small masks may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner’s would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Small masks placed on shrines would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. Like the full-sized dance masks the smaller masks reflect

Old Bena Lulua Mask with Headdress. Songye Yoruba Luba Baule Dan Lega Yaka
Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Stand not included. Thanks for looking!

The face is surrounded by a complex costume designed to enhance her appearance and with the brass bells to give sound to ... moreher dance. The rolled raffia representes a ceremonial headdress. This mask shows signs of long use and ritual importance and a good age- Famous for their masks. The Dan believe that spirits, known as"Du, live in the forests and manifest themselves to humans in masks and masquerades, instructing and sustaining the Dan in life. When during a dream a male was instructed by Du to dance a mask, he would commission a carver to make a mask for him. Among the Dan, masks are grouped in an assortment of forms with different duties assigned to each. This mask. With its oval shape, shiny smooth black surface and finely carved features is called Deangle or Tangle. Thought to portray a female, it dances in a style thought to be feminine, with gliding steps and graceful movements. Deangle dances for all to see as"she" entertains and instructs the village in peaceful pursuits. Each Deangle mask reflects the skill of the artist and taste of the patron, and while local variations occur, there are long established criteria for Deangle that reflect a continuum in Dan cultural aesthetics and styles. African Tribal Collection - Guere gere Warrior Mask Dan Cote D'ivoire
Description Authentic African antiquities& artefacts for discerning collectors(Most pieces sourced by us direct from remote villages) THE AFRICAN TRIBAL COLLECTION Item Number: MA3797 Originates from: Cote d'Ivoire Tribe: Dan Guere Materials: Wood, Condition: Weathered; fair condition for its age. Approximate age: Mid 20C 50 years old Measurements cm: Height 31 Width 34 An amazing Guere mask- found in a village near Lake Buyo in the east of Cote D'ivoire. Bought from the village chief and offered for sale on behalf of the village. These masks were/ are still used in funeral ceremonies and interogations. The We/ Wee/ Guere/ Gere/ N'gere/ Ngere people live south and south-East of the more famous Dan people in Cote d'Ivoire/ Ivory Coast/ Elfenbeinkuste. They share many aspects of culture with the neighbouring Dan. They created ... moremasks that were used during festivities. Funerals, rituals, wars, and that look rather scary and monstrous. Modern ethnology puts the Wobe and Guere together under the name We. Despite the fact that the people themselves use the old names. The We population is estimated at 100,000. Rice, yams, taro, manioc, maize, and bananas are the primary crops grown. Farming and hunting have been largely replaced by laboring in the diamond camps or working at the rubber plantations. Confederations govern both ethnic groups- the largest is the warrior confederation which is led by a military chief, who also acts as a civil authority. The family units also play an important role in We social life. The art of Guere and Wobe people is stylistically connected and both groups are often collectively referred to as We. Meaning"men who easily forgive. Like the Dan, the We use a wide variety of masquerades, which hold important regulatory position within their small, egalitarian communities. Masks are owned by families and used by individual lineage members in contexts of social control, boy’s circumcision camps, and entertainment. Most We masks were created to frighten with the gaping jaws

BACKGROUND Dan people. Who are also known by the name Yacuba, live in the western part of the West Coast and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. The 350,000 Dan people make their living from farming cocoa, rice and manioc. Before unifying secret societies were set up at the turn of the century, each Dan village was an autonomous socio-political unit governed by a chief elected on the base of his wealth and social position. Today, the leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. Dan people have achieved notoriety in the area for their entertainment festivals which were historically village ceremonies, but are today performed largely for tourists. During these festivals, masked performers dance on stilts. The Gagon mask has the same function as the Dugle and is predominantly found in the northern Dan territory. It has a high-domed forehead, slit eyes, a long, beak-like nose often with black monkey fur attached underneath, and a long jaw. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most

Dan Mask West Africa (2nd half of 20th Century)
This mask is characterized by an elongated and protruding nose and a large headdress with feathers and two small circle mirrors. The mask is bearded with goat hair. And adorned with shells. There are traces of encrustation on the brown patina. The considerable reputation of the Dan in the artworld is based almost entirely on their output of beautiful and expressive masks. The masks are fairly uniform in style. And most often are found in two sizes: large face masks used for dances and festivals, and tiny"passport" masks kept as personal talismans. The Dan also produce fine, figural"hospitality" spoons, and elaborate wooden"mancala" games, a popular pastime throughout much of West Africa. Though somewhat unexpected, the Dan produce very little in the way of formal statuary, and the few statues that exist are usually ... morefemale and thought to represent"favorite" wives. Utilitarian objects are either rare, or not distinct enough to attribute. The Dan, historically a warrior people, are thought to have been in the Ivory Coast area for perhaps two thousand years, though the evidence for this is scant. It is known however that the Dan were heavily preyed upon by slave raiders in the 17/18th century, and the creation of Liberia in 1847 was marked by the repatriation of large numbers of them. These returning ex-slaves eventually outnumbered their relatives in the Ivory Coast, and that is still the case today. The Dan have no centralized government, and each village is relatively autonomous. The ability to accumulate wealth and prove one's ability are highly prized by Dan society, and the belief is known as the"tin. This social system still exists today, though the ways to gain wealth and prestige have changed, from prowess in agriculture and hunting, to success in the diamond mines and rubber plantations. Masks with hornbill beak like this were found among the Dan and also among many other ethnic groups living in their neighborhood. Iv. Coast: Tribal used & Old African mask from the Dan
Finely crafted african Tribal used initiation mask from the Dan. Ivory Coast. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments and colored bead necklaces. Back construction from basketwork. Height: 36 cm. The 350.000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte Iv. and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, coffee, rice and manioc. They also live off game and fish. The Dan have the reputation of being fierce warriors, always battling their neighbors, the We, the Guro, and the Mano. From a cultural viewpoint the Dan are close to the We populations situated in forest regions of the south, and against whom they have waged innumerable wars. Lacking a central authority. The various groups had neither a political institution nor ... moreunity. The village is under authority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political unity, reinforcing rules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. These societies called upon the tutelary spirits of the bush. The most powerful, even today, is the secret society of the leopard, the go. Which, without having fully achieved its stabilizing and unifying goal, nevertheless grows from one year to the next. The leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. In order to attain adult status, all the boys and girls of the same age-group undergo an initiation that includes, in addition to specific teaching, circumcision for the former and clitoridectomy for the latter. To underline the transitional aspect of this trial, it takes place in the world of the bush– the realm inhabited by spirits who, like the ancestors, can play a mediating role between humans and supreme being Zran.

Poro is an exclusively restricted man’s society, however masks between the Wee and their Dan neighbors are divided into male and female categories based on their form and details. Female masks are rounded or oval, narrow eyes and finely delicate non-challenging features, whereas the male mask is larger in size, grosser in proportions, with an open and challenging mouth with teeth, tube-like eyes, fur and raffia. The exaggerated features of this mask, though vaguely human, refer to forces in the bush whose energy and powers add to the authority of the spirit represented. Whereas female masks appear to entertain, male masks exercise social control, punishing wrongdoers, settling disputes, declaring wars and proclaiming peace. In th

Economy: The African tradition of tin working is still an essential part of the Dan economy today. RARE VINTAGE ETHNOGRAPHIC Hand Carved Wooden AFRICAN DAN MASK Hemp Beard & Hair
i000000. RARE VINTAGE ETHNOGRAPHIC Hand Carved Wooden AFRICAN DAN MASK Hemp Beard& Hair HAND CARVED WOODEN AFRICAN DAN MASK HEMP BEARD& HAIR Nice old mask. I believe this is what they call a Dan Mask, but I'm not an expert. It is fairly large at about 17" X 9.5" with the hair and beard being about 3-4" when laid flat. It is carved from wood with a very dark brown finish inside and out. Fringe of hair and beard appears to be made of hemp or some other natural fiber and is fastened with string woven through holes in the outer edge of the mask. There are a couple chipped teeth and a larger chunk missing from the chin with a hairline crack forming from there. The hair is curled up a bit in spots. If you don't like that look. You could probably wet it down and spread it out with some weight on it and let it dry out ... morein a more uniform manner. Overall. It has good patina and the look of an antique item. Dan Guerre Initiation Mask (African - Ivory Coast)
Dan Guerre Initiation Mask The Dan tribe chiefly inhabits the Ivory Coast and Liberia where they arrived in the eighth century B.C. The Guerre(also Gwere. Or Ngere) tribe lives nearby in the southwest corner of the Ivory Coast. These 2 groups have enjoyed a friendly relationship and their artistic styles have intermingled. This Dan mask. Incorporates elements from both styles, and would have been used to initiate young males into manhood. Dan mythology separates the world into 2 separate spheres: the sphere of the village and the sphere of the forest. When a Dan boy reaches the age of 16, he must venture forth from his safe village environment into the hazardous and unpredictable forest. There he must prove his courage by hunting Africa's most dangerous animals using only a spear. When the village elders are convinced of his courage, ... morehe is initiated into manhood in ceremonies using this mask. This particular Dan Guerre mask is from the Ivory Coast and features a beautifully hand carved wooden mask with 2 iron bells on the chin, large cowrie shells around the forehead and a cow's tail on the back. It is 7 inches wide by 10 tall(chin to top of cowrie shells) it is just about 24 inches long from the tip of the nose to the end of the cow’s tail; and would be worn with a full suit of raffia. This is not a cheap tourist souvenir! This is a mask. Most likely, used by the tribe in an initiation ceremony! This mask would be right at home in any museum! PAYMENT& SHIPPING IT'S REAL EASY!
