Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. The masks could also be used to bear as a witness during an initiation ceremony. Often carried on the small of the back, these masks rarely exceeded ten inches in length. This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Its exterior displays very few tooling marks, and the interior is, as is usually the case, more roughly rendered. It s

Accompanied by drums it confronts a woman who has been using fire carelessly or a fire much too large for its purpose. It appears in a very aggressive dance and will throw sticks and things about, knock over the cook pot with their meals into the fire and may even beat the women who set the fire to cook. Not a friendly mask at all. It also in some areas serves as a war mask. When used the mask had a cloth wrap around the outer edge that covered the dancer when wearing the mask, in fact it may have been hooked onto the small at the nail at the top of the mask, The remains of Kola nut staining on the forehead is the result of ritual spitting of the cola nut as a sacrificial offering. Superb Dan Mauo Ceremonial Mask with Raffia, Liberia / Ivory Coast
The Dan Mauo maks were used during initiation ceremonies. These are made exclusively and worn by male dancers. Dan masks are unique to Poro society. They serve to protect young initiates against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation until he enters the spirit realm. Dan people classify surroundings in two realms. The human and spirit realm(forests) Crossing the boundry of the two realms may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both realms. Once the mask is donned he is transfromed into a spirit, going into a deep trance, and brings forth messages of wisdon with uncontrollable utters, translated by a wise man. The Dan Maou people live in the northwestern part of the Dan region. Their masks are distinguished by a long beak-like form at the chin or mouth. Masks like these were feared by the general population ... moreas they served a judiciary function in denouncing spell-casters.These mask are not worn but place in front of the face, held by the long beak. This mask is 15" high X 10" wide, not including raffia. Made from wood, raffia, shells and medicine pouches.

Iv. Coast: 3 Tribal used Old African mask from the Dan.
3 Tribal used African mask from the Dan. Iv. Coast. This type of masks embodies the ideal of female beauty. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments and abrus beans. Head hangings from basketwork. With cloth and raffia fibres. Height: 22 cm. only the wooden part) The 350.000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte Iv. and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, coffee, rice and manioc. They also live off game and fish. The Dan have the reputation of being fierce warriors, always battling their neighbors, the We, the Guro, and the Mano. From a cultural viewpoint the Dan are close to the We populations situated in forest regions of the south, and against whom they have waged innumerable wars. Lacking a central authority. ... moreThe various groups had neither a political institution nor unity. The village is under authority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political unity, reinforcing rules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. The leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. In order to attain adult status, all the boys and girls of the same age-group undergo an initiation that includes, in addition to specific teaching, circumcision for the former and clitoridectomy for the latter. To underline the transitional aspect of this trial, it takes place in the world of the bush– the realm inhabited by spirits who, like the ancestors, can play a mediating role between humans and supreme b

AUTHENTIC AFRICAN ART SMALL DAN MASK WITH ROUND EYES from Liberia 1982
I acquired this mask in Liberia in 1981 from one of the traveling traders. So called"Charlies" It is carved in dark hardwood. Such hardwoods take a long time to dry, the cracks may develop 10-15 years after the tree was felled. Hardwood is more difficult to carve but it is much more durable and unlikely to be attacked by wood boring insects. The mask is quite small, it is 9 ¼" long and 5 ¼" wide. It weighs 14.5 oz(without any packing material) During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary. I continued enlarging my collection when, a few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire(now Democratic Republic of Congo) I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not ... moreinterest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa.

Miniature masks often called"passport" masks are found among the various peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast. Including the Dan, Yacouba, Gio, Wenion(We, Guere) Geh, Loma, Konor, and Bete. This one comes from the Dan people. Sharing a wide variety of uses they are the personal masks of initiated adult men and would be carried on their person or kept on personal shrines in the home. They carried small"passport" masks in leather pouches when they traveled. Passport masks serve to mark the passage of an initiate into the men secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. The small masks may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner’s would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Small masks placed on shrines would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. L
Antique Vintage African Art Baule Yaoure Dan Carved Mask Ivory Coast Tribal Art
Beautiful and artistic antique vintage carved African tribal mask. I am not sure if Baule, Yaoure or Dan. I was told that is probably from the Ivory Coast. Dan or Kono Mask, Estate Purchase
A powerful and expressive old mask from the Dan or Kono people of Cote d'Ivoire. Masks of this type. With stylized horns on the forehead and bellicose expressions, are meant to be intimidating displays of male power. This well-made example, which shows considerable wear, has holes in its upper lip where metal or bone teeth would once have been attached. I purchased it from a Philadelphia-area estate reseller. The mask measures 10 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches across, and 4 inches deep. The stand is for photography only and is not included in the sale. International bidders are welcome. Liberia: Large Old Tribal used African mask from the Dan - 73 cm.
Tribal used African mask from the Dan. Liberia. This type of masks embodies the ideal of female beauty. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments and abrus beans. Head hangings from basketwork. With cloth and raffia fibres. Height: 73 cm. The 350.000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte Iv. and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. The various groups ... morehad neither a political institution nor unity. The village is under authority of a chief and a council of elders. In addition, there were male associations that attempted to bring about a socio-political unity, reinforcing rules of behavior, demanding absolute loyalty and obedience from members, and giving an initiatory education to the young. These societies called upon the tutelary spirits of the bush. The most powerful, even today, is the secret society of the leopard, the go. Which, without having fully achieved its stabilizing and unifying goal, nevertheless grows from one year to the next. To underline the transitional aspect of this trial, it takes place in the world of the bush– the realm inhabited by spirits who, like the ancestors, can play a mediating role between humans and supreme being Zran. The Dan people
