This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Its exterior displays very few tooling marks, and the interior is, as is usually the case, more roughly rendered. It s

Authentic Tribal Dan Mask from Ivory Coast, Africa
This mask is hand carved of wood by the Dan people. It is 9 inches tall and 7 inches wide- not including the beard and hair. It sports hair and braids of dyed vegetable fiber. The stark faces of Dan masks easily distinguish them among African art. The Dan have inhabited the Ivory Coast and Liberia since the eighth century B.C. A loose confederation of villages totaling some 350.000 individuals, they have spent much of their history battling neighboring tribes and sometimes each other. This gave them a ferocious reputation as each Dan warrior sought tin: individual prestige or glory. In former times tin was available through bravery in war; but the encroachment of colonial governments, and increased centralization has made tribal conflicts less common. Today's young Dan warrior must find his tin through other pursuits. Unity was finally ... morebrought to the Dan people with the institution of the Leopard Society or Go in the late 1800s. African Tribal Mask Dan Tribe Ivory Coast Mixed Media Great Folk Art Female Mask
African Tribal Mask This mask is made out of mixed media items: clay. Fabric, paint, etc. It is from the Dan Tribe on the Ivory Coast now known as Cote d'Ivoire. Consignor of this item says that her grandfather bought it back from a missionary trip sometime before the 1950's. But the age is unknown. Dan Female Figure Wearing Mask Liberia African - Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)
This is a nice find of an 18" tall African statue from the Dan ethnic group in Liberia/ Ivory Coast area. This is a rare example of Dan statuary. The carving represents a female figure wearing a face mask. This piece is decorated with intricate scarification on the face. The chest, the body, the upper arms, and the back. Dan art is highly collected with masks dominating, mainly because there are so few statues on the market. This"masked female figure" is an unusual find, and one of the rare instances of verified Dan art in West Africa. The scattered Dan people(warriors) were thought to inhabit the Ivory Coast area for two thousand years. They were exploited by slave traders and were repatriated into the newly-formed Liberia in the 1800s. This figure is probably a late example carved by the Dan of Cote D'Ivoire strongly ... moreinfluenced by their neighbors. Among the Dan and Grebo people. There is no evidence of woman dancing with masks. The unusual figure may be a late example of figures most likely carved for non-traditional use. This is a great piece for any collector- happy bidding! Item is sold"as is" and the buyer assumes responsibility for determining the value based on the photos. Please look closely and ask questions if necessary. Returns accepted if not satisfied. Must make payment within 7 days of auction close. I will ship outside the United States. VINTAGE AFRICAN TRIBAL ART DAN BOY'S INITIATION MASK CARVED IN WOOD from Liberia
The Dan people live in the western part of Ivory Coast and north-eastern part of Liberia. Dan man have their own"secret society" Which marks their initiation into manhood. During my stay in Liberia I tried to learn a little about the local customs and culture but the societies are truly secret and the members are forbidden to talk about them. I did learn though that the societies are controlled by the elders in the community and involve various levels of initiation. Young boys initiated into the society undergo circumcision. During the initiation ceremony they wear a mask that is specially made for them for this occasion. They also paint their faces around the eyes and the mask with white kaolin clay. Dan women also have a similar society and young girls have their own initiation ceremony. I lived in Liberia in early 1980's ... moreand the secret societies were still very powerful at that time. Native people often went to church on Sunday but the rest of the time continued to follow their own traditional beliefs. There are regional variations among the masks of the Dan people but most of them are exceptionally well carved and are characterized by a concave face. A protruding mouth, an upturned nose and a high-domed forehead, the male mask has usually round openings for eyes and the female mask has usually narrow slits for the eyes. I collected African art objects mainly for their decorative value. The mask shown here does look like a ritual mask but it was most likely made for the African art market. It is made of quite heavy wood and the ritual masks are usually very light. It also does not show any signs of wear. I do not think that it was ever used in rituals. Dimensions: 10" long. 6 ½" wide, 3" deep- all measurements are approximate taken at longest/widest points. If you are interested in African art please check my other listings from time to time. I will be listing soon many more items that I collected during the time I worked and travelled in the region. I will combine shipping if

Lot 802, Dan Poro Society Ceremonial Mask, Liberia / Ivory Coast
The Dan masks were used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively. By male dancers. Dan masks are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation, till he one day enters the spirit realm. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms- the village with all inhabitants(human realm) And the forest(bon) spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred. And crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male ... moremask dancer dons the mask. He is transformed into a spirit. African Tribal Mask From The Dan With Cowrie Shells And Bells Textile MUST SEE!!
African mask From the Dan people of Liberia and the Ivory Coast It is wood. With metal enhancements, textile, cowrie shells, and metal bells Some sort of animal hair for the top. Has a very unusual smell This particular mask seems to be some type of ceremonial dance mask Dan people. More than others, favor the use of cowrie shells very much. They not only represent a decorative function, bit also indicate that the spirits have blessed the one being imitated with the wealth. The cowrie shells had economic value. And were therefore used for bartering. I cannot quote its age. However I have had it looked at by the AAMM(African Art Museum of Maryland) and In their opinion, looking at the cloth, and the rubbed areas, it definitely shows usage, as in used in ceremonies by the Dan. I do include free shipping I will ship USPS. With insurance and ... moretracking immediately after payment is confirmed. Thank You! Posted with eBay Mobile Posted with

The 350.000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte d’Ivoire and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, coffee, rice and manioc. They also live off game and fish. The leopard society acts as a major regulator of Dan life and initiates young men during their isolated periods of three to four months in the forest. In order to attain adult status, all the boys and girls of the same age-group undergo an initiation that includes, in addition to specific teaching, circumcision for the former and clitoridectomy for the latter. To underline the transitional aspect of this trial, it takes place in the world of the bush– the realm inhabited by spirits who, like the ancestors, can play a mediating role b
