Bena Biombo- Democratic Republic of the Congo Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Pigment, vegetal fibers Height 36.1cm( 14.25in) without raffia beard ... moreLewis and Sonja Pate Collection. Whispering Pines, NC. Field collected in Zaire, early 20th cenury. Dr. Carlton W. Helen Moore Collection. Waldorf, MD. Fayetteville Museum of Art. Fayetteville, NC, 2001. Deaccessioned and sold to fund construction of the new museum in Festival Park. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their Kuba neighbors to the north. Describing an near identical mask form. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient tribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Dr. Carlton and Helen Moore Collection. The Pate& Moore Collection was generously donated to Fayetteville Museum of Art in 2001. Founded in 1972, the Fayetteville Museum of Art move

Or the Kongo people(Kongo: hunters” also referred to as the Congolese, are a Bantu ethnic group who live along the Atlantic coast of Africa from Pointe-Noire(Republic of Congo) to Luanda, Angola. They are primarily defined by the speaking of Kikongo, a common language. They are the largest ethnic group in the Republic of Congo. In the late 20th century. They numbered about 10,220,000. It is most likely the Kongo people arrived in the region of the mouth of the Congo River before 500 BC. As part of the larger Bantu migration. They were already working iron in the region and practicing agriculture by that time. Social complexity had probably been achieved in some regions where Kikongo is spoken by second century AD. By the late fifteenth century when European voyagers described them, they were living in a number of kingdoms, including the kingdoms of Kongo, Ngoyo, Vungu, Kakongo, and others, stretching

Info about Suku: Basuku) The 80.000 Suku people have lived in the southwestern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the 16th century. Their main economic resource is farming. Cultivation of yams, manioc, and groundnuts is done primarily by women. This is supplemented by the men hunting with dogs in the surrounding forest and by the women gathering wild berries, nuts, and roots. Occasional fishing in the Kwango River also provides some food. Although hunting rarely provides substantial quantities of meat to the Suku diet, it is considered an important part of male culture. Palm tree plantations provide the Suku with palm oil, an important commodity for local and international trade. The Suku have an initiation. The n-khanda. A special hut is built in the forest to give shelter to the postulants during their retreat; the event ends in circumcision, an occasion for great masked festivities including dances and song. The masks fulfill several functions: some serve as protection against evil forces, others ensure the fertility of the young initiate. Their role consists in frightening the public, heal

This mask belongs to the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. For examples, and more information, see Bacquart's TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA and Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIRIAN ART-THE BRONSON COLLECTION. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red.

Originating in the region of the Ugandan lakes. They descended toward the upper Lindi River and settled in the area around Kisangani. They live in a dense forest terrain which include natural palm forests. Due to their proximity to the river they have had constant contact with the Metoko and Lengola tribes. In the mid 18th century the Kumu were dominated by Arab traders which led to the quick urbanization and weakening of the Kumus' internal power structure. There were numerous small revolts but the Kumu were never able to regain their autonomy after the Arab arrival. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. MAJOMBE, MAYOMBE, MAYUMBA, MAYUMBE, YUMBE) Both Congo Republics and Angola Due to the thick forests surrounding Yombe territory the land must be cleared through slash and burn techniques before crops can be planted. The land is usually cleared by men. Leaving the task of farming to the women. Plantains, manioc, maize, beans, peanuts, and yams are among the primary crops grown. These are primarily used for local consumption, but surplus is also sold in regional markets to obtain cash. Goats, pigs, chickens, and dogs are also raised. Fishing on the Congo(Zaire) river and its surrounding tributaries provides an important source of dietary protein. Men are also responsible for hunting, weaving, carving, smithing, and smelting. Women create clay pots for domestic use. The forested region of the Lower Zaire River is important in the artistic history of black Africa. Because it boasts the greatest concentration of maternity figures and stone statuary. The focal point is the vast Yombe area where numerous individual styles may be found. The Kongo kingdom influenced the Yombe who, at one point of their history, were an integral part of this kingdom. The 350,000 Yombe people are artistically prolific. They produced some of the finest sculpture in all Africa. Their statues contained the same themes as the Kongo's: maternity figures, seated kings, objects of prestige, and nail and mirror fetishes. The Yombe female phemba statues are used in divinatory practices or associated with fertility rites. Phemba figures represent women in seated. Cross-legged, or kneeling poses with pointed or round coiffures, necklaces of glass or coral beads, a cord tied around the breasts, jewelry, and filed teeth. Women are an important Yombe symbol since they are considered to be not only a nur

The Tabwa are a tiny tribe of more than 200. 000 in the Upper River Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. Tabwa art has only recently come to be identified as a separate style often confused with the sculpture of their neighbors or others who took Tabwa identity. Tabwa figural sculptures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. Their carvings usually stand on a circular base with slightly bent knees and hands resting on their abdomen. Sometimes the hairstyle is a George Washington queue. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aesthetics. Social membership and the abstract idea of order upon

TRIBAL AFRICAN KUBA Of Congo-Kinshasa ROYAL MASK
For your consideration: I purchased this mask at an estate sale in Chicago about 10 years ago. The sale was of a world traveler and there were many fascinating things available for those willing to go out in a snowstorm. Several years ago I moved and decided to list this mask on EBay. I received an email from a member of EBay in Washington DC who said that it was a mask from the Kuba ethnic group in Congo-Kinshasa. The mask was used in dances at the court of the Kuba King. While I have no assurances of it's authenticity. I will give you a detailed and in depth description and will gladly answer any questions you may have regarding this beautiful ethnic piece. The mask is carved from a single piece of wood. On the back of the mask. The holes do not seem conformed in shape, as if a drill were used, they would likely be the same shape, some ... moreholes are larger some smaller. The holes for the eyes are not identical. On the front of the mask. Running down the center of the nose to the chin, the beads are sewn on a strip of cloth. Three colors are used, in the intricate patterning- black, brown, and a lighter brown. The top of the mask looks to be handwoven with seashells in a diamond pattern. There is a diagonal hole near the seam in the top. There are 5 dangling strings of beads and shells that are complete. One is broken and it looks like two dangling ones are missing. The red cloth the intricate pattern of shells that covers the head is cotton. All seams on this mask are hand sewn in large stitches. The brown lines between the shells appear to be small seeds. The brown cloth at the shoulders beneath the shells. Is very rough texture, and may be handwoven as well, but a much smaller thread. The ears on the mask are made of a light wood. I don't believe this to be antique. But by the fabric it is definitely good and vintage. The wood is 10" the teardrop shaped crown is 7" The length in the back 10" I leave it to your expertise it's value- but one thing is for sure- it is a beautiful piece of c

Which are best appreciated from the side or profile. This particular Lwalwa mask is known as"shifo" Shifola" or"Tshikulukulu" which means owl whose beak is said to have inspired this type of mask. Shifola is a male mask recognized by its short and rounded nose. The dancer would hold a piece of cord between his teeth which passed through the mask and was knotted in a hole under the nose. The large nose serves as the central sculptural form with square eyes on either side. In general. Lwalwa masks are used as dance masks at the end of initiation periods and after circumcisions to celebrate new adults in the society. The Lwalwa live in a fertile but isolated region. Near the confluence of the Kasai and Lueta rivers and, despite their historical ties to the Kete, a sub-group of the Kuba, they have developed a unique and easily recognized style. Their artistic tradition is limited almost exclusively to masks, with statues almost unknown, and their pieces are scarce. The Lwalwa lived originally in parts of the old Lunda Empire, but they refused to submit to Lunda r

The Lega people live near the northern end of Lake Tanganyika on the banks of the Lualaba River in the DRC. They are also known as the Warega. Living in small village groups. They have no centralized authority, but govern themselves through a communal association known as"Bwami. This association is composed of male and female members, who strive to advance up through the various ranks of Bwami, a long process which involves challenges as well as proof of knowledge. The ultimate goal for the initiate is to reach the highest level. And become a"Kindi, a position of power, prestige and influence with the village. It is during the various Bwami ceremonies that the charming and popular heart-faced masks are used. The masks are transported in baskets from village to village by high-ranking elders. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style. With a heart-shaped, concave face, slightly protruding forehead, narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth, often with a rather surprised and charming expression. The surfaces of the masks are rubbed with kaolin/pembe each time they are used, and thus acquire their striking white appearance. Though fairly commo

This is a very small version of the famous Songye Kifwebe mask. And its function and use are unclear. Kifwebe mask is the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. This mask does not have a protruding central crest, which means that the mask is feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks. Or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among
Holo Mask With Raffia Fringes Angola DR Congo African
Title, Holo Face Mask With Raffia Angola DR Congo African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Holo, Materials, wood. Pigment, raffia, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 12 inches; 6.5 inches W, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, General wear. Patina worn away in small places on the face, chips, scratches, Additional Information: An interesting face mask with raffia fibers around the face. Coming from the Holo. The Holo style is recognized here by the grave expression of the face, the coffee beans eyes, a pointed nose and an open square mouth. The face in the form of a heart has a dark patina. This type of masks are known as mukishi among the Holo. They represent the spirit of dead and are used during the ceremonies of initiation and circumcision. Mukhanda. These masks were performed ... moreduring the Mukhanda ceremonies to celebrate and welcome new adults in the society. The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. What we know of their art often dates itself to a mid-1950's messianic cult rising during which much of their ritual sculpture was destroyed. Therefore objects either pre-date this event or were hidden during the destruction that took place. Holo had other works and objects such as slit drums, framed figures(nzambi) masks and ironwork that were related to royal elites. At best the character of the piece will stand as a challenge to place among a single people and yet it has it’s own simple sculptural charm as well as magical potential in the cavity to hold substances. Though the Holo are divided into two geographically distinct groups(one in Angola another in the DR Congo) They still consider themselves one people and have a lot in common. Their art is almost similar. They are both well-known for their rite of initiation and circumcision

Songola Mask White Face DR Congo African Messick Collection
Title, Songola Mask White Face DR Congo African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Songola, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 14 inches x 8 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina. Cracks and chips, Additional Information: This is a rare example of a ritual mask from an almost totally undocumented group. The Songola are neighbors of the Lega. Whose rituals and artistic styles they emulate. Their masks are beautifully elongated and narrow, and the heart-shaped face, in some ways resembling Fang"Ngil" masks in their shape. Our mask has open mouth, the eyes are represented by two large openings. The nose occupies half of the Face. Another type of Songola mask is very similar to some Mbole masks, called executioner masks(see Marc Leo Felix, 1987, 162) ... moreSuch Songola masks would probably have been used in initiation ceremonies similar to the Bwami rituals of the Lega. There are almost no writings on the Songola people and their art. The Songola originated west of Lomami and have common origins with the Metoko. Kumu, Bangu-Bangu and Zimba(see Marc Leo Felix)They are farmers and fish is also an important economic activity among the Songola. From the Lega, the Songola borrowed the Bwami society in which context masks and figures are almost exclusively used. Recommended Reading: Cornet. Joseph. Exquisite African Art - Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Congo
Exquisite African Art- Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Congo African Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Tribe: Chokwe Origin: D.R.Congo Approx Age: Mid-late 20C Materials: Wood. Cloth, braided netting, veg fibre Dimensions cm: 45 tall x 40 wide Chokwe Mask Mukishi wa Cihongo This carved and elaborated wooden mask is a fine and rare example of the sophisticated artistic traditions of the Chokwe people. A major ethnic group occupying areas of Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Chokwe masking traditions, which provide guidance, order, meaning and coherence, have been particularly influential for the Chokwe and among their neighbors. As M. L. Rodrigues de Areia asserts: The masked dancer performs the most prestigious activity on momentous occasions of social life. Namely, initiation processes: mukanda, for boys; ukule, for girls. The ... moreperformance gestures agilely transmit knowledge and learning, integrating the young into the traditions of the group. Embodying the spirits of the most prestigious dead(who have meanwhile become ancestors) the masked dancers are the great interpreters of the group’s collective memory and knowledge of living that bind together all the members of the group. Feared by women and children, they enjoy a special status that distinguishes them above even hunters and blacksmiths, because their performance identifies them with the knowledge and/or ideal of the ancestors and founding heroes of the society. 1) Among the Chokwe. This male wooden mask represents the culture hero Chihongo, who brings prosperity to the community. With its disc-like projection at the chin beneath the expressive mouth and nose with flared nostrils framed by coffee-bean eyes beneath a ridged diadem, it evokes power, which is reinforced by its superstructure, which once supported feathers alluding to and invoking the power of the upper world. The power and wealth this mask symbolizes is further enhanced by its raised scarification detail, and refined red pigmented surface patina acquired through ritual use

Raffia fibers, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 13.5 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, spares, Additional Information: This mask is identified as part of the Luluwa(Lulua) complex of people due to the shared details of facial marking and features. This mask shows an bulging forehead. A concave face, pointed chin, and the netting headdress. The Lulua are well know for their elaborate body marking and facial scarification through their sculptures and early 19th century photographs. This mask has round marks on the bulging forehead similar to Lulua sculpture. The treatment of the eyes, ears and smiling face are also taken from Lulua figural sculpture. This ... moreface mask with its expressionistic sculptural forms and well carved details conveys some of the'body art' so well developed among the Lulua. Among the Lulua, earlier known also as the Bena Lulua, masks are rarely experienced and where known are given short definitions of how they are used such as during the circumcision of young boys or other rites of passage. This lack of information is due in fact that there are simply few masks recorded among the Lulua. This is a rare example of its kind and would be of good addition to any collection. On stand, Africa Additional ... moreInformation: This face wooden mask completed by an impressive headdress decorated with cowrie shells and beads is from the Leele people. The headdress is very similar to those found on some Kuba masks. The Leele(or Lele)live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. They have a number of similarities with the Kuba. And share the same language and history. Their sculpture and utilitarian objects such as cups, containers, pipes and musical instruments, show clear Kuba influence. One of the most popular creations of the Leele artists is the Itumbwa or rubbing oracle. Made in the form of a human or animal, it was used as a divination device. Like the work of Kuba artists, the Itumbwa is covered with geometric patterns. Masks made by the Leele differ somewhat from the Kuba masks. Made of wood. The Leele mask is adorned with red pigment, and the eyes and nose region is covered over with metal plates forming multiple lines of eyebrows. The flat face of the mask is heightened with the addition of a headdress of raffia textile, decorated with cowrie shells and beads. Keloid(linear scarification) is found on some Leele masks. L

The Suku are and have been heavily influenced by the Yaka carving masking traditions especially among the western Suku where they share many masking forms. Where the Yaka versions were brightly colored the Suku Kakungu masks are less colorful but sculpturally more dynamic. Worn as a helmet the priest/leader of the boys camp would wear this large mask and use the eye holes just below the eyes to look through. This mask does not have eye holes. This large mask. Over two feet tall has a large forehead, bulging eyes, great saggy cheeks, a great oversized nose and a small mouth carved in relief all nearly lost in the excessive features of the face. This really extraordinary Quaking mask was meant to impress the young boys undergoing circumcision with the power of the spirits and the authority of the priests. Raffia was attached in a kind of ruff of vegetation making the mask look all the unworldly. Large masks are not common in collections and this Kakunga would add a unique piece of Yaka/Suku art to a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with t

SALE !! TRIBAL AFRICAN KUBA Of Congo-Kinshasa ROYAL MASK
PLEASE NOTE; ITEMS WILL MAILED ON OCTOBER 23. AS I AM OUT OF TOWN PICKING UP MORE FABULOUS ITEMS FROM MY FAMILY'S ESTATE For your consideration: I purchased this mask at an estate sale in Chicago about 10 years ago. On the ... moreback of the mask. The holes do not seem conformed in shape, as if a drill were used, they would likely be the same shape, some holes are larger some smaller. The wood is 10" the teardrop shaped crown is 7" The len

Damage/Repair, cracks in crest and in one side of the mask chips and shallow cracks in places. Stains, Additional Information: ... moredditional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest with brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. ‘Beauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.’ In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. Notwithstanding its origin this is a strongly carved mask with obvious signs of long use and some patination on the inside gained through time. It is probable that such a mask was inspired by the Songye masks The miter-like form on the top. As well as the squared mouth recall some Songye mask from a localized identification to a Songye Tempa sub-group. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style

Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 25.5 inches H. x 10.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair to Good, Damage/Repair, Cracks in face. A few cracks fairly repaired with indigenous glued material, chips and stains in places Songye Kifwebe Mask. Huge Male, DR Congo, African Mask Additional Information: The large crest denotes a male. The mouth is a huge tube with typical Songye shape! This is the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square ... moreand protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area.
