Old African Kongo Mask - Angola, Congo
The Kongo may number about three million people. Present in three countries– the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The king holds political, economic, judiciary, and religious power. He makes decisions about warfare, regulates commerce with foreign countries, and receives tributes from his vassals. When he renders justice, he is seated on the skin of a leopard, wears a hat and a necklace of teeth, and holds a commander’s staff and a fan. The king alone makes contact with the dead, at the time of judgments when he executes criminals and enemies ... moreof the State. In addition to the authority of the king. The nganga consecrates medications and is in charge of the cult. The healer works with the help of plants or magic. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions, such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the nganga, and to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives. Hunters, musicians, and healers. Their postures vary: sometimes they kneel in a position of respect, the head bent slightly backwards; women might be depicted seated with the child they hold by the neck or whom they are nursing. The cheeks are round, the face, carefully rendered, is realistic. The patina is smooth, the bust scarified. Elaborate geometrical patterns occur on the pedestal or the body, where

Their masks are beautifully elongated and narrow, and the heart-shaped face, in some ways resembling Fang"Ngil" masks in their shape. Our mask has open mouth, the eyes are represented by two large openings. The nose occupies half of the Face. Another type of Songola mask is very similar to some Mbole masks, called executioner masks(see Marc Leo Felix, 1987, 162) Such Songola masks would probably have been used in initiation ceremonies similar to the Bwami rituals of the Lega. There are almost no writings on the Songola people and their art. The Songola originated west of Lomami and have common origins with the Metoko. Kumu, Bangu-Bangu and Zimba(see Marc Leo Felix)They are farmers and fish is also an important economic activity among the Songola. Martin acquired the Salampasu mask in the town of Kananga. Mark Schulman acquired the artifact by descent from his father. The mask is in fine condition and has the characteristic mukinka facial features which were intentionally frightening. These qualities include a large and bulbous forehead. Rectangular eyes, and a snarling mouth featuring pointed teeth. Some loss to the fiber netting and only minor loss to the rattan headdress; the hole at the base indicates the mask was likely adorned with a fiber beard. Appropriate of age, origin, and medium. The subject Salampasu mask was also exhibited at our local university museum from January to February of 2010(see second and third to last photos) Reference a comparable example from the Sotheby's Auct

The large nose serves as the central sculptural form with square eyes on either side. In general. Lwalwa masks are used as dance masks at the end of initiation periods and after circumcisions to celebrate new adults in the society. The Lwalwa live in a fertile but isolated region. Near the confluence of the Kasai and Lueta rivers and, despite their historical ties to the Kete, a sub-group of the Kuba, they have developed a unique and easily recognized style. Their artistic tradition is limited almost exclusively to masks, with statues almost unknown, and their pieces are scarce. The Lwalwa lived originally in parts of the old Lunda Empire, but they refused to submit to Lunda rule and moved south. Today they ar

The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions. Such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the nganga. And to the heads of cults. Hunters, musicians. And healers. Their postures vary: sometimes they kneel in a position of respect, the head bent slightly backwards; women might be depicted seated with the child they hold by the neck or whom they are nursing. Congo: Rare Tribal used African Double Lulua mask.
Tribal used Expressive african Double Lulua mask Congo. This type of mask can be seen in context symbol of remembrance ancestor. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 41 cm. Lulua is an umbrella term. Which refers to a large number of heterogeneous peoples who populate the region near the Lulua River, between the Kasai and Sankuru rivers. The Lulua people migrated from western Africa during the 18th century and settled in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo(formerly Zaire) They number 300,000 and live in small regional chiefdoms and in times of crisis elect a common leader. The role of the village chief is to insure juridical, political and social cohesion. During the late 19th century, Lulua culture underwent radical changes. In 1875, the Lulua king, Kalambam, introduces new social and ... morereligious regulations, which ended the traditional palm-wine drinking and hemp smoking. Their economy is mostly based on agriculture. Hunt and trade. Primarily farmers. Lulua women grow manioc as a staple crop, as well as beans, sweet potatoes, maize, yams, peanuts, and bananas. The men are responsible for clearing the forest and preparing the soil for cultivation. They also hunt, fish with nets, and trap animals in the surrounding forests. Salt is found in the region and is collected and sold to neighbors to generate income. The Lulua statuary is remarkable in the degree of its scarification. A manifestation of a wish to be socially differentiated. These marks must be very ancient as in 80 th of 19 th century they were no found on the Lulua themselves. The statues represent great chiefs with beards and insignia. And these effigies would be planted in the ground to protect the household when the head of the family was absent. These male figures depict warriors-chiefs who often hold a ceremonial sword and shield, or a cup. Sometimes knives and other paraphernalia hang from the belt. The most famous statuettes are the mbulenga. Or female charm statuettes. The chibola are mat
Exquisite African Art - Kuba Twin Faced Lele Helmet Mask Congo, Glass Beaded
Exquisite African Art- Kuba Twin Faced Lele Helmet Mask Congo. Glass Beaded Kuba Twin Faced Lele Mask Tribe: Lele Origin: Kuba Kingdom D.R.Congo Materials: Wood. Woven material, glass beads, cowries Dimensions: 59cm Tall x 35cm Wide A beautiful rare twin faced Lele mask adorned with a stunning arrangemet of glass beads and cowrie shells on a woven helmet with two wooden face masks. A few of the glass beads have disappeared over the years due to wear and tear. The 20.000 to 30,000 Lele people occupy the western region of the Kuba kingdom. The men work in the forest, where they hunt in groups, locate medicinal plants, cut wood, sculpt, and communicate with the spirits. The women are in charge of the food crops and of fishing in the marshes; feeding the village is their responsibility. The sculptor hunts, extracts palm wine, and participates ... morein daily assemblies. Heading the Lele is the nymi, a king with limited powers. The village is organized according to age groups, with the oldest man as chief. The elders have a monopoly over the traditional cults, created to ensure the fertility and prosperity of the village. Presently, the elders are still the depositories of healers, who used to be organized into the banging society and subject to initiation. This society included mature men as well as the parents of twins, who were considered to be mediators between the spirits and humans. The art of the Lele is not well known. It is similar to Kuba styles with the exception of its masks. Which generally have a flattened shape. The most important forms of Lele art are carved drums, divination instruments, boxes, pipes, and palm wine cups. Also Lele carvers produce statuettes and face masks. The masks often have slit eyes. The functions of the masks are little known. Lele masks appeared in dances accompanying the burial rites of chiefs and in annual foundation/creation ceremonies. Although the art of the Lele borrows many elements from the Kuba and Dengese in particular, the hairdo and long braids of the statuettes distingui

About Us, Payments, Delivery, Contact Us, Ethnic hut is the result of my keen interest in collecting tribal African items. I have been a regular visitor to West Africa since 1999. I always brought back several items to add to my personal collection. Friends and family were always very interested in items I brought back to the UK and I was bombarded with requests to sell my items to them. I realized that tribal African art was indeed appealing to even those who previously had no conscious interest in them. This directly gave rise to Ethnic Hut and my effort to provide fine tribal item of African origin for established collectors or indeed anyone appreciative of the beauty and appeal of these tribally crafted items. Ethic Hut is not part of any dealers network and do not buy from any dealer. All my items are always purchased in Africa personally. I travel regularly to West Africa to purchase items myself because I really enjoy selecting items with help from local expert who are born and bred in the region many of these tribal items are crafted in. The knowledge and advice received from my local expert guides
