Lega Idimu Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 22.8cm( 9in) without raffia collar ... moreKudi Gallery Collection. Provincetown, MA Ex-Private Collection. Naples, FL, 2006 Acquired at auction in Naples. Florida. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Kudi Gallery in Provincetown. The mask has some minor age cracks and chips. All stable and typical of traditional use. Good condition. Appropriate for age, origin and medium. Reference a close example from the Fowler Museum Collection in Los Angeles. CA(see last photo or reference on the Fowler Museum Website) WE WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE* If you are outside the USA. The surface shows significant wear and good age. The present mask belongs to the category of the most famous Songye masks knowns as Kifwebe and made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. This is a female character recognized by the abscence of a central crest. According to Hersak(1985: 168) the striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striat

Beautiful Antique Eastern Luba Kifwebe Face Mask 2 - Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Luba face mask from the Katanga region in South East DRC. The Luba is a large tribe whose establishment as an organized power can be traced back to the 16 th c. The Luba Empire then expanded through the 19 th c. before eroding in part due to the European colonization. As a major center of power. The Luba civilization produced a vast number of political and royal insignia(staff, spears, knifes, axles, cups, headrests, stools, etc. as well as masks. Eastern Luba refers to a group located at the most eastern part of Luba territory– of mixed origin(Luba, Hemba, Buyu) and at the time vassals of the Luba King. Eastern Luba also carved a variety of objects(of power and ritual) and masks– which incorporate elements of the main Luba group and from the other originating tribes. Luba actually produced round face masks– sometimes ... moreassociated to the Kifwebe of neighboring Songye. The piece here is round in shape- with a thin nose forming a tiny crest on the upper part of the mask. It has slit eyes and mouth. The mask is entirely covered in small striations except for a zone around the eyes and mouth that is covered with a brown patina. This is an unusual mask. It shows a slight(indigenous) restoration on the chin. Dimensions are approximately 12x10.
Fine Large Antique Songye Kifwebe Mask Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful– and very fine antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the male type- characterized by the very large crest(symbolizing an elder or important person) Kifwebe Songye masks with extreme features(like the protruding eyes and mouth) were produced from the 1920s through the 70s. I believe(judging by style and patina) the piece here to be an early piece. It is made of a medium wood, with a very large crest on top, relatively small eyes, a square, cross shaped mouth. The entire masked is striated and shows a succession of green, white and reddish pigments- ... moreall of which had a symbolic meaning among the Songye. The inside of the mask show an excellent, dark patina. This is a large, spectacular mask. Dimensions are approximately 27x15. Additional Information: This face mask belongs to the category of Pwoo Itok and Isheen Maal masks of the Kuba-Ngeende. It shows features very particular to this type f the masks: a protruding forehead. Cone eyes surrounded ... moreby holes. Multiple holes in the surrounding areas of the eyes evoke the chameleon which can see everywhere. The face has a large triangular nose. On this mask, the surface is dark brown and shows much handling. Pwoo Itok and Isheen Maal(also called Pwoom Itok and ishyeenmaal or Shene Malula) This type of mask is found among the Kuba-Bushoong. The Shoowa, and the Ngeende peoples. According to some sources, I sheen Maal was inspired by Pwoo Itok. In any case. The difference between the two is hard to detect and in the literature they are seen as the same mask, with different names depending on where the mask was found. Most likely the Shoowa use the Pwoo Itok while the Kuba prefer the term Isheen Maal. Such masks were used as a dancing mask during the initiation of young men and among the Bushoong it was worn by members of the Batende. A secret regulatory society which had among its duties the apprehension of criminals. The Ngeende group claims to be descended from Ishweemy. One of the nine sons of Woot, the primordial founder of the Kuba Kingdom. Accordingly, the Ngeende are of special importance to the Kuba Kingdom and designated as the holders of the Kuba official charms

The ultimate goal for the initiate ... moreis to reach the highest level. And become a"Kindi, a position of power, prestige and influence with the village. It is during the various Bwami ceremonies that the charming and popular heart-faced masks are used. The masks are transported in baskets from village to village by high-ranking elders. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style, with a heart-shaped, concave face, slightly protruding forehead, narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth, often with a rather surprised and charming expression. The surfaces of the masks are rubbed with kaolin/pembe each time they are used, and thus acquire their striking white appearance. Though fairly common, Lega masks continue to be incredibly popular with collectors. The social and political life of the Lega(also known as the Warega) is regulated by the Bwami society. To which both men and women belong. There are seven levels for men, four levels for women. Masks were used for initiation to one of the first two levels of the Bwami society. The white sections were repainted with Pembe each time they were danced. The mask was worn by the initiate and also displayed on a fence. Small masks like this were used a

They borrow styles from one another. They sometimes order masks from a neighboring artist. The same mask may serve more than one purposes and even be used by more than one group. Kiyunde mask portrays a male wild buffalo and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. Tacks worked onto the face of the mask in elaborate and attractive scarification patterns and designs represent the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aesthetics, social membership and the abstract idea of order upon the chaos of nature. The Suku are and have been heavily influenced by the Yaka carving masking traditions especially among the western Suku where they share many masking forms. Where the Yaka versions were brightly colored the Suku Kakungu masks are less colorful but sculpturally more dynamic. Worn as a helmet the priest/leader of the boys camp would wear this large mask and use the eye holes just below the eyes to look through. This mask does not have eye holes. This large mask. Over two feet tall has a large forehead, bulging eyes, great saggy cheeks, a great oversized nose and a small mouth carved in relief all nearly lost in the excessive features of the face. This really extraordinary Quaking mask was meant to impress the young boys undergoing circumcision with the power of the spirits and the authority of the priests. Raffia was attached in a kind of ruff of vegetation making the mask look all the unworldly. Large masks are not common in collections and this Kakunga would add a unique piece of Yaka/Suku art to a collection. I have examined this piece and agree with th

The complex system of instruction, initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwami society uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate’s knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Through time Bwami initiates earn the privilege to wear and display masks that might be worn on their arms or faces or simply exposed on racks or on the ground indicating their rank before other Bwami society members. For the Lega the ultimate goal is to reach the uppermost level of Bwami where one would be recognized as a Kindi, a leader and also a moral and social authority to be honored with the right to wear or carry certain masks. Congo: Very Old and extremly Rare Tribal used African Bozo mask. Height: 37 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly ... morehierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Proportions are true to

Impressive Kuba Wall Mask, Democratic Republic of Congo
The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions. And significant cultural accomplishments are part of their heritage. Among the best known of Kuba art forms are royal portrait figures, ndop. Idealized representations. An ndop may have played a role in the installation of the king. And during his life it is said to have been not only a portrait but also the soul double of the king. Whatever happened to him was believed to happen to it as well. Closely associated with the king’s fertility, the ndop was kept in the woman’s quarters. And was placed next to his wives during childbirth to ensure safe delivery. The kings typically sit facing forward with legs crossed, the left in front of the right; the right hand, with fingers extended, rests on the right knee, and the left hand holds the royal dagger. Geometric ... morepatterns cover the stomach and are continued on the back of the figure. The royal statues show the king wearing a rectangular shody hat. They are mounted on quadrangular pedestals. The sculptures include objects significant to each particular king, identifying his own personal accomplishments. Developing from the court style was a popular style, which utilized geometric forms instead of the well-modeled, full-volume forms of the court figures. Kuba fetishes, emphasizing only essential organs, are highly schematic. The popular style can also be found in the utensils and textiles produced by the Kuba. Over twenty types of masks are used among the Kuba. With meanings and functions that vary from group to group. Kuba wooden helmet masks are probably the most commonly produced items. Popular with the collectors. These striking masks are wonderfully decorated with geometrical surface designs in dazzling contrasts of color, pattern, and texture. Hide, animal hair, fur, beads, cowrie shells, and feathers ornament the masks, and costumes of bark-cloth, raffia fiber fabric, and beaded elements complete the manifestation of nature spirits, intermediaries between the Supreme Being and th

The Biombo live just to the south of the confluence ... moreof the Lulua and Kasai Rivers. And mingle with both the Kuba and Eastern Pende, who have greatly influenced the appearance of their masks. Reportedly they use their masks during or after circumcision ceremonies. Though this mask shows both Pende and Kuba influence, it has a style all its own, distinct from that of their neighbors. The rectangular mouth even shows elements of the Songye, and is atypical for the Biombo, who normally craft small, pointed, tubular mouths for their masks. The triangular incising, contrasting pigments, and ubiquitous regional features present here have caused many Biombo masks to be misidentified. See Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIREAN ART. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks. Or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture.

No drinking in public and no handshaking with men. Fetish figures serve different purposes: protection of whole villages. Protection of individuals against death or disease and many, many others. They are being handled mostly during new phases of the moon. Three characteristic facial expressions can be usually distinguished: broad smile, sad and serious expression. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called boanga. The fetishist would make the boanga with magic ingredients which he crumbled and mixed. Thus obtaining a paste that was kept in an antelope horn hung from the roof of the house.
