Horned Kifwebe masks are mostly found among the Luba Eastern. The Kifwebe tradition which exists among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. The use of these small masks remains unclear. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are

Near the confluence of the Kasai and Lueta rivers and, despite their historical ties to the Kete, a sub-group of the Kuba, they have developed a unique and easily recognized style. Their artistic tradition is limited almost exclusively to masks, with statues almost unknown, and their pieces are scarce. The Lwalwa lived originally in parts of the old Lunda Empire, but they refused to submit to Lunda rule and moved south. Today they ar

In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate ... morethe region today. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. HANDMADE AFRICAN ART CERAMIC MINIATURE MASK PENDANT FROM KINSHASA CONGO SIGNED
This mask was made by a student named Mayembe at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1988 in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo(at the time the country was actually named Zaire) Zaire then. And DRC now, is a poor country, unable to offer financial support to its youth. In order to support themselves and continue with their studies the students at the Academy sell their art. Many of them are very talented and produce beautiful art works which range from paintings, sculpture, ceramics and metalwork to large installations. When I worked in Zaire I bought from the students several pieces of art and used them to decorate my house. I will be moving to a smaller accommodation and have to part now with some of my collections. If you would like to know more about the plight of art students in Kinshasa, you can follow this link: http:www.krachtvancultuur.nl/en/current/2008/september/kinshasa. ... moreThe article includes a short video 1:27, between 49-54 sec of the video you can see an example of a large ceramic mask made by a student. I will be listing shortly similar masks. The mask featured here is a stylized miniature of a Senufo tribal mask(long nose. Pouting mouth and a prominent chin- some of the easily recognizable characteristics) Dimensions: 5 ¼” long. 1 5/8” wide and weighs 2 ¾ oz. The mask has a hole in the top end for threading through a cord. I displayed a few of those miniatures hanging on different lengths of fishing line in a window. They look well hanging on a wall too. The mask can be also worn as a pendant. It looks great on a leather cord worn with a chunky, knitted sweater- see the last 2 photos(I live in Florida and could not find a really chunky knit to best show it off) Note: the leather strap is not included. Please note: I will be listing soon some more of the miniature masks as well as some full size ceramic masks and other african art items. Check my listings from time to time. If you are interested. I will combine shipping. If you buy from me more then one item.

Hide, metal(cooper) beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 16 inches. Width is 10 inches. Depth is 9 inches. Overall Condition, FAir Damage. Repair: Some damage to beadwork on back and leather on top. Fur is falling out. Additional Information: A unique and stunning example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries, and an expressive, even sardonic smile, this is an outstanding and beautiful example, lacking the sometimes overly-adorned beaded face. In fact, without the bulging forehead which identifies"Bwoom, the mask would have been difficult ... moreto categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Among the Kumu or Komo people such masks were performed during the ceremonies of initiation and circumcision of young boys(Nkumbi or Kumbi) They were also used as dancing masks at the funerals of important members of the community. They are said to represent the spirit of forest. Such a mask was used by the Kumu people who live north of the Lega in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is difficult to discuss this mask definitively as they are either incompletely discussed or are themselves so very rare. Sketchy reports indicate that they were used in many associations including in initiation ceremonies of the Ganza and Mbai association. By a diviner's society or Nkunda association. They were displayed in funerals for members of the Nkunda association. This white painted mask is simple but strongly carved and could be an important addition to a collection of the art of the Kumu people. The Kumu live on the western edges of the Ituri Rainfore

HANDMADE AFRICAN ART CERAMIC MINIATURE MASK FROM KINSHASA D.R CONGO ZAIRE SIGNED
This mask was made by a student named Tangu at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1988 in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo(at the time the country was actually named Zaire) Zaire then. If you would like to know more about the plight of art students in Kinshasa, you can follow this link ttp:www.krachtvancultuur.nl/en/current/2008/september/kinshasa. ... moreThe article includes a short video 1:27, between 49-54 sec of the video you can see an example of a large ceramic mask made by a student. I will be listing shortly similar masks. The mask featured here is a stylized miniature of a tribal mask. Somewhat similar to Lwalwa initiation masks. The Lwalwa people live in equatorial Africa in southeastern Zaire/ D.R. of Congo. Dimensions: 4 ½" long. 2 5/8” wide and weighs 4 3/4 oz. Please note: If you are interested in African art please check my other listings. I will also be listing many more African art(both contemporary and vintage tribal) items in the near future. Where were found masks with face encrusted and embellished with finial metal wires and striations, and scarifications on the cheeks and eye areas. The Leele live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. They have a number of similarities with the Kuba. Sharing the same language and history. Their sculpture and utilitarian objects such as cups, containers, pipes and musical instruments, show clear Kuba influence. One of the most popular creations of the Leele artists is the Itumbwa or rubbing oracle. Made in the form of a human or animal. It was used as a divination device. In general masks made by the Leele differ somewhat from the Kuba masks. Made of wood, the Leele mask is adorned with red pigment, and the eyes and nose region is covered over with metal plates forming multiple lines of eyebrows. The flat face of the mask is heightened with the addition of a headdress of raffia textile, decorated with cowrie shells and beads. Keloid(linear scarification) is found on some Leele masks. The Kongo may number about three million people. Present in three countries– the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles. With Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions. Such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the nganga. And to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged ... morein a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives. Hunters, musicians, and healers. Their postures vary: sometimes they kneel in a position of respect, the head bent slightly backwards; women might be depicted seated with the child they hold by the neck or whom they are nursing. The cheeks are round, the face, carefully rendered, is realistic. The patina is smooth, the bust scarified. Elaborate geometrical patterns occur on the pedestal or the body, where they may be mingled with fine scarification marks. The figures were used to ward off danger to mothers during delivery and to protect the health of the child. The commemorative statues known as phemba were designed for women who had lost a child and wanted another. These carvings. Generally sophisticated and very graceful, were thought to favor such a happy event. In addition to the figures. Crucifixes were also produced, in brass or bronze(using the lost-wax method of casting) They help the hunter and the warrior; while mbula protect against witchcraft. Over two feet tall has a large forehead, bulging eyes, great saggy cheeks, a great oversized nose and a small mouth carved in relief all nearly lost in the excessive features of the face. Antique Chokwe Carved Mask, Angola-Congo 12 inches
Powerful Chokwe. Jokwe, Tchokwe Pwo mask. This hooded initiation mask is called Chihongo which was the symbol of wealth and considered a male mask. Carved in wood with tribal scarification marks it was used by itinerant dancers dressed in a knotted constume to which they attached false breasts. These masks had different hair arrangements. The carving leads right into the tightly executed knotless netting of oiled vegetable fibers(minjiwa) which form a cap or hood making the mask easy to wear. The inside of the cap is lined with fabric. The knots continue to 3 rows around the face which again makes wearing easy. The circular cijingo scrification marks are carved on the cheeks and a simplified version of the cruciform tribal mark. Called cingelyengelye appears on the forehead. The carved headband is known as lenge. The circular scarification ... moremarks( cijingo) symbolize the sun and male power. Although this mark is the typical symbol of the god Nzambi. There is probably some influence from the old Portuguese cross. It is interesting to note that the initiated had to learn the various dances in which Pwo masks were used although they did not themselves wear these masks. This is a beautifully carved and dressed mask worthy of the finest collection. AFRICAN ART AKA PEOPLE MASK WOOD CARVING FROM CONGO, BRAZAVILLE from 1986
The mask was given to me by a friend. Zairoise, who brought it from Brazaville for me. I worked at the time in Gbadolite in Zaire(now renamed as the Democratic Republic of Congo) I do not know what was the purpose of this mask. Most tribal masks, made to be used in rituals, have eye openings(for the wearer to see through) and some means of attachment to the head of the wearer, this mask has neither. The mask has some characteristics of the Aka(Bayaka) people tribal art, such as elongated nose, sharpened teeth, shape of the eyes but it was probably made to be sold and not for ritual use. Aka people are pygmy and yet the mask is rather large: 13" long and 6 ½" wide(approximate measurements) I collected African art for its decorative value and this mask does look great on the wall- note- when you look at the mask"en face" ... moreit does look rather scary but when you look up to it. From below(as if you were a pygmy) it seems to be smiling. If you are interested in African art please check my other listings from time to time. I will be listing soon many more items that I collected during the time I worked and travelled in the region. I will combine shipping if you buy from me more then one item.

Beautiful antique Central Pende Muyombo Mask (Gabama) Congo Zaire /DRC
This is beautiful antique Muyombo mask from the Central Pende. The Pende is a large tribe spread over Southern DRC. Although typically classified into two main groups(Western and Easter) At least four subgroups are known, with great variations in styles: Western, Central, Kwilu and Eastern Pende. Each of them produced an extraordinary array of masks. Some of which were destined to initiation rites, while others were danced in villages upon a series of social events. As often in traditional tribal sculpture. Pende masks are highly symbolistic and can serve different purposes, depending on the occasion. The piece here is known as Muyombo. It shows a flat face with a large forehead, fixed eyes with large eyelids, a square nose and triangular mouth. The appendix below the chin. Sometimes referred to as a beard is said to rather be an illustration ... moreof the sheet covering the bodies of the deceased– which also explains the fixity of the face represented. Unlike the related Giwoyo. However, the Muyombo was danced in villages and is associated to the heat of life, as opposed to the coolness of death. The piece here is of beautiful quality. It is made of a medium wood and shows great details and an excellent. Very fine cut, such as in the large eyes, sharp cheekbones, tiny triangular mouth and large square nose. This style is reminiscent of that attributed to a master carver from the Central Pende(Gabama Gingungu) The mask also shows a nice dark patina inside. Dimensions are 12.5x8.

Damage/Repair, scratches. Chips and shallow cracks to the back, Additional Information: A face wooden mask entirely painted in white with pierced eyes and toothy mouth. ... moreThis mask is attributed to the Kumu and was used in various ceremonies related to men' associations and initiations. All share in many of the uses of masks and figures with other members of the greater Kongo Kingdom. Such masks are used during initiations. Funerals of important individuals or may have social control functions or are used by diviners and healers. When used by diviners the mask exercised power in the same fashion as the well-known nkissi figures(also known as nail fetishes) that is also seen in this mask with the nails forming the coiffure. Prominently displayed on the forehead is a mirror that was encircled by small Abri seeds. The face is painted in black. White, and red. Colors play an important role in reinforcing the fine drama of the mask that is surrounded by a ruff of russet colored grasses that hide the head and face of the wearer during the performance. On stand, Africa Additional Information: This face wooden mask completed by an impressive headdress decorated with cowrie shells and beads is from the Leele people. The headdress is very similar to those found on some Kuba masks. The Leele(or Lele)live in the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai Rivers in territory which adjoins the land of the Kuba. They have a number of similarities with the Kuba. And share the same language and history. Their sculpture and utilitarian objects such as cups, containers, pipes and musical instruments, show clear Kuba influence. One of the most popular creations of the Leele artists is the Itumbwa or rubbing oracle. Made in the form of a human or animal, it was used as a divination device. Like the work of Kuba artists, the Itumbwa is covered with geometric patterns. Masks made by the Leele differ somewhat from the Kuba masks. Made of wood. The Leele mask is adorned with red pigment, and the eyes and nose region is covered over with metal plates forming multiple lines of eyebrows. The flat face of the mask is heightened with the addition of a headdress of raffia textile, decorated with cowrie shells and beads

This mask belongs to the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. For examples, and more information, see Bacquart's TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA and Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIRIAN ART-THE BRONSON COLLECTION. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some
