Title, Kwele Mask with Horns Gabon Ekuk Mask African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Gabon. Republic of Congo. People, Kwele, Materials, Wood. ... morePigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 17 inches H. x 7 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, scratches and chips, Additional Information: A lovely example of a Kwele mask with a heart-shaped face in white and red. And surmounted  two sylized horns elegantly  joined at the top. The Kwele live in the northeastern of Gabon and the Republic of Congo(Congo-Brazzaville) They have produced varieties of mask used in the initiation ceremonies into the Bwete cult. The Bwete Society has social control over most activities of the Kwele. A small patrilineal group living to the east of the Fang and Kota, in the dense forests of inland Gabon. Masks such as this were worn on the face or kept hanging in the house. When worn. Their function was to"warm up" the village atmosphere in order to activate the beneficial forces from the Bwete containers. There are two primary masks used by Beete dancers, one resembling an antelope(Ekuk) and the other a gorilla(Gon) The present mask belongs to the category of famous, heart-shaped"ekuk" masks representing the peaceful spirits which might be encountered during the hunt, as opposed to the"gon, which symbolizes danger. The elegance, striking color contrast, and pleasing symmetry of the"ekuk" has attracted a devoted following with collectors, though the deeper meaning surrounding its use is elusive. Damage/Repair, large crack in head around ears. Fairly repaired, chipped ears, scratches in places A dditional Information: A Tabwa helmet mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tabwa masks are rare and little is known concerning their use and functions. The literature points out three types of masks among the Tabwa. The first category is represented by the anthropomorphic wooden helmet mask like this with headdress nicely decorated with diamond and other patterns. Scarification patterns around hairstyle line, in temples, and in cheeks. This category represents the female ancestor(Musangwe) symbolizing fertility. The name Musangwe is related to sexual promiscuity. Our mask falls into this category. During the masquerade, Musangwe is always accompanied by the male mask(Kiyunde) which constitutes the second category. This second type is a zoomorphic mask representing a buffalo. There is no precise information to confirm if these two masks perform the primordial or mythical couple. The third type of masks was discovered more recently. Masks of this category are made of glass beads stitched onto raffia cloth. The functions of these masks are not known for sure. But they all are related to either the Mbudye or the Butwa society. They are probably involved in ritual dances linked to fertility, the birth of twins and ancestor cult in the Butwa

This example comes from the Kumu(Komo) people. Komo masks have become known to collectors only in the last quarter century. Mostly as a result of an influx of foreign aide workers into the region. Among the Kumu or Komo people such masks were performed during the ceremonies of initiation and circumcision of young boys(Nkumbi or Kumbi) They were also used as dancing masks at the funerals of important members of the community. They are said to represent the spirit of forest. Such a mask was used by the Kumu people who live north of the Lega in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is difficult to discuss this mask definitively as they are either incompletely discussed or are themselves so very rare. Sketchy reports indicate that they were used in many associations including in initiation ceremonies of the Ganza and Mbai association. By a diviner's society or Nkunda association. They were displayed in funerals for members of the Nkunda association. This white painted mask is simple but strongly carved and could be an important addition to a collection of the art of the Kumu peop

They were not worn on the face but either hand held or attached to a fence or a wall. Wood w/ kaolin pigment; Rafia attached to the bottom; 6" L. without rafia. Great"Picasso" look to this! Mask. And a few others I will be listing, came from the collection/estate of a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art and other ethnographic material. I was told that he had been collecting African art since the 1960's, and much of his collection was donated to various museums. I was lucky to be able to acquire a nice collection of the passport masks. gsrx_vers_418(GS 6.0.6(418)

A Giwoyo Mask - Pende - D.R. Congo - GREAT PROVENANCE
A Giwoyo Mask. Pende, D.R. Congo- GREAT PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina from age, fiber, raffia, remains of original pigment. Masks such as this were used in theatrical performance that accompanies Pende Mukanda initiation. This includes some sixty characters in a variety of masks and costumes. Some of which were believed to have magical and curative powers. This mask, called Giwoyo, distinguished by its elongated wooden beard. Emerges at dusk. Representing the ancestor, Giwoyo is a bridge between the visible and invisible. Sacred and profane, living and dead, traditional and new. According to the Pende oral tradition. Their original territory was near Luanda in Angola. Warfare, as well as pressures caused by slavery, impelled the Pende to begin their migration away from the coast by the early sixteenth century. By the early eighteenth century ... morethey had reached the areas in which they live today. Some scholars have suggested that the Giwoyo mask originated after the first encounters with bearded European missionaries before the beginning of the eighteen century in what is now Angola. Signs of use. Some damage. H: 44.5 cm(17 1/2 inch) Literature: Bourgeois. Arthur and Rodolitz, S. 2003) Remnants of Ritual: Selections from The Gelbard Collection of African Art. Provenance: L. A Bwoon Helmet-Mask/ Bushoong. Kuba Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowries shells, cloth, powerfully carved with large bulbous forehead. The Kuba kingdom was founded in the 16th century by the Bushoong people. Bushoong art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of royal mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Nady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister and represents women in general. The third mask, the Bwoon. Is associated with Woot‘s“evil brother” Bwoon personifies a commoner. A pygmy, or one who opposes the king's authority. Bwoom appears on the nkan"initiation fence" of the Bushong(Vansina ... more1955:150-151) and in other initiation contexts. A royal mask. Bwoom is sometimes worn by the king. Yet unlike Mwaashamboy. Bwoom does not appear at funerals. Despite regional variations, the Bwoom mask conforms to a distinct type. All styles feature strongly rendered proportions dominated by an enlarged brow, broad nose, and usually naturalistic ears. Signs of use. H: 35.5 cm(14 inch) Literature: Bacquart. ANCIENT / VTG CONGO GODDESS 18" Hand Carved Wood BEAD METAL Shell African MASK
This was from an estate sale in Naples. FL, The family this came from traveled Africa in the early to mid 1900s. The mask has signs of wear due to age. The metal that was used does have a nice patina to it and is no longer shiny and a few pieces are missing. The beads used very in size but most are seed beads. They are very small. Smaller than 1/16 inch. The time this must of took is amazing. It's a large mask. 18 inch high and almost 14 across. It's about 4 inch deep. Unfortunately two screws were add in the back with a wire so it could be hung. The other mask I got they just tied a fishing string around his hat and that worked so no small holes in the back. The eggs in the nest on the mask are shells very popular for the area. I looked very hard all over the place to find this mask. I haven't seen one like it. African mask are ... morehard tell age, when and what it was used for. I'm going off the look of this mask. The craftsmanship and size. When I saw it my jaw dropped. It's beautiful. If anybody has any information on it please let me know. I might be selling this way less than what it's worth. Any questions please ask. Thank you! Posted with

The Congo Collection: Rare & Fantastic Museum-quality Lega Bwami Mask - Zaire
This is an auction for a very special. Double-faced Lega mask. It measures 10.5 inches in height by 9 inches in width and has a fine aged patina. This mask came from a remote area of the DRC(Zaire) located approximately 150 kilometers west of Lake Kivu. Lega masks with heart-shaped facial regions are referred to as Lukwakongo. When this museum-grade Lukwakongo was originally collected in 1973. It already had decent age. It came from an important group of seven Lega masks(see pic) which I personally acquired in the D.R.C. last year. This mask was a twin to one of the masks in the collection. The original 6 will stay together(on my wall) as a group, whilst number 7 shall be orphaned out to a lucky new owner. Despite the fact that the mask displays signs of being extremely old. It is in decent shape. There are two very fine, age-related cracks ... morewhich run from the edge of the mask to the“lower lips” of the two mouths. The cracks are not visible to the casual observer especially when the mask is hanging on the wall. Both of the heart shaped faces are very heavily coated with layers of calcined kaolin clay pigment and it is apparent that the eye and mouth configuration of this particular mask reflect some Mitoko/Mituku elements. This particular museum-grade mask is 55 to 65 years old. And shows indications of substantial weatherization, wear and handling. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain these authentic items. Especially those with substantial age. Presently, many of the African“antiquities” posted on E-Bay are much newer than their description would indicate. In contrast. The Congo Collection: Makua-Makonde Mask - Real Human Hair - African Mapiko
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This is a unique Mapiko- or Lipiko-style mask from Southern Tanzania which shares both Makua and Makonde features. It measures 11.25 inches in height by 7.25 inches in width and shows signs of use and great age. While the majority of the Makua ethno-linguistic group lives in Northern Mozambique. This particular mask came from the Mtwara region of Southern Tanzania. For this reason it shows similar facial scarification and hair-placement patterns as Northern Makonde(in Southern Tanzania versus Northern Mozambique) As can be observed from the pictures. The mask was created with human hair, some of which is still intact. There is also a hole in the upper lip for a lip-plug. This museum-grade Makua Mask was originally collected in the late 1960’s from Southern Tanzania and subsequently acquired ... moreby me last year in Tanzania. This particular mask is approximately 40 to 50 years old. And shows indications of substantial wear and handling. There are slight. Age-related scrapes, dirt deposits and discolorations visible upon close inspection; however the mask is in exceptional condition considering its age. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain these authentic items. Especially those with substantial age. Presently. The Congo Collection: African Antique - Makonde Mapiko Ritual Mask - Tanzania
This is an absolutely stunning Makonde Mapiko Mask which we picked up during the second half of 2012 in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. It is an authentic ritual item which shows signs of considerable ritual use. And measures nearly 12 inches square or 12 inches x 12 inches. This mask is a highly collectible piece due to its authenticity. There is an age crack on the left side of the mask which looks to have been repaired 25 to 30 years ago. The mask is structurally sound. Yet well-weathered. It is between 40 and 50 years old which qualifies it as a bona fide antique. Note: This is not a reproduction. Nor a piece which was fabricated for the purpose of resale. This is an actual ceremonial mask used in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique for ritual and ethno-spiritual purposes. Mapiko Masks are used during a tribal celebration ... morewhich involve large numbers of the Konde People(Makonde) The initiates become figures of fear when they don these special and frightening masks. The Mapiko ceremony of the Makonde can be seen in Northern Mozambique and Southern Tanzania. Throughout Tanzania the Southern Tanzanians and Northern Mozambicans are feared and respected for their magical powers. In Swahili the local magic men or bush doctors who possess special powers are referred to as M'ganga(singular) or W'ganga(plural) Standard or Economy Shipping w/in Continental US for a $25 Flat Rate. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style. With a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly protruding forehead, a narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth.
